MONTHLY SUMMARY OF THE MINISTRY OF CULTURE FOR THE MONTH OF JANUARY, 2019 1. On the occasion of 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, following programmes/events have been conducted by organisations of Ministry of Culture: i. Hon’ble President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind led the nation in paying rich tributes to the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi at Gandhi Smriti on the occasion of the 71st anniversary of the Martyrdom of Mahatma Gandhi on January 30, 2019. ii. The National Salt Satyagrah Memorial was inaugurated by Hon’ble Prime Minister at Dandi, Gujarat, on 30.1.2019. iii. Gandhi Smriti & Darshan Samiti in association with the Airports Authority of India set up the Mahatma Gandhi interpretation Centre at the Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport on 23.1.2019. The exhibition focused on Mahatma Gandhi’s relation with Varanasi comprising of 12 panels. iv. Two days Gandhi Katha by Brahma Kumari’s was organised by GSDS in January, 2019. v. Department of Museology of National Museum conducted a series of workshops titled ‘Gandhi for All’ in Ladakh, Delhi and Western Uttar Pradesh so as to reflect upon the life and principles of Mahatma Gandhi in a fun and meaningful way. 2. Commemorative Coin was released by Hon’ble Prime Minister of India on 13.01.2019 to commemorate 350th Birth Anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. 3. West Zone Cultural Centre, Udaipur organized ‘Lokotsav’ at Goa, ‘Camel Festival’ at Bikaner, ‘Prakruti Festival’ at Mumbai and ‘Multi-lingual Theatre Festival - Natyotsav’ at Goa. All the ZCCs are also participating in ongoing Kumbha Mela, 2019 at Prayagraj. 4. Allahabad Museum organized an exhibition based on ‘Kumbh-Mela’ at Kalagram at Arail, Prayagraj. 5. National Museum is exhibiting ‘Ethnic Jewellery of Himachal Pradesh’ from 11th December to 15thFebruary 2019. 70 jewellery pieces are on display in the exhibition. 6. The Archaeological Survey of India and Hercules Laboratory, University of Evora, Lisbon, Portugal jointly organized a workshop “Old Goa Revelation: New Insight on the Vice-Roys Portrait Gallery” at Goa. 7. Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts organized “Arya Utsav-a festival to celebrate the cultural traditions of Dard Aryans of Ladakh”. 8. National Museum Institute (NMI) i. NMI conducted the International seminar on ‘Cosmopolitan Kalamkaris: Crafting connections through 17th century figural fabrics’. ii. NMI in collaboration with the Comité International d’ Histoire de l’Art (CIHA), organized a three-day International Colloquium in which more than 100 scholars and art historians presented their papers. iii. The new Campus of National Museum Institute at NOIDA was inaugurated by Shri Prakash Javadekar, Hon'ble Minister for Human Resource Development, Govt. of India in the Presence of Dr Mahesh Sharma, Hon'ble Minister of State (I/c) for Culture and Hon’ble Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Govt. of India & Chancellor, National Museum Institute on 30thJanuary 2019. 9. Sangeet Natak Akademi (SNA) i. SNA in collaboration with the Ramakrishna Mission, New Delhi, organised the 156th Birth Anniversary celebration of Swami Vivekananda and the 126th Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda’s Chicago Address. ii. SNA sponsored Lai Haraoba and folk dance of Manipur led by Shrimati Dhanarani Devi on the occasion of the 19th Global Folk Dance Competition & Carnival at Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. 10. Sahitya Akademi (SA) i. SA, in collaboration with Bodo Sahitya Sabha, organized a Birth Centenary Seminar on Kalicharan Brahma at Kokrajhar, Assam. ii. In collaboration with Sparshanandan, Sahitya Akademi organized a Brailee Poetry Festival of the visually impaired poets at Narendrapur Blind Boys Academy, Narendrapur, West Bengal. iii. The Sahitya Akademi celebrated its Annual Festival of Letters 2019 and organized various programmes during the festival. 11. Anthropological Survey of India (AnSI) provided collaborative Academic Financial Assistance for holding the National Seminar “Essence of India: Unique Markers of Biology, Culture, Language and History of India Population” at Anthropological Association, Mysore. 12. A Cultural Exchange Programme between India and Algeria was signed during the month of January, 2019. .
