Dave Mckean: Black Dog on View: July 1 – August 14, 2021 | Opening: July 1, 11 AM to 9 PM Dave McKean: Black Dog On view: July 1 – August 14, 2021 | Opening: July 1, 11 AM to 9 PM Dave McKean, Black Dog: The Dreams of Paul Nash, page 90, 2016 mixed media on paper, 29.5 x 21.7 inches Philippe Labaune Gallery is pleased to present Black Dog, an exhibition of drawings by British artist Dave McKean from his 2016 graphic novel Black Dog: The Dreams of Paul Nash. McKean, a multidisciplinary artist whose work spans illustration, photography, film, and music, utilizes this multifaceted approach to form a dream-like psychological portrait of British landscape and wartime artist Paul Nash. Black Dog will be on view from July 1 – August 14, 2021, with an opening reception on Thursday, July 1 from 11 AM to 9 PM. Dave McKean was commissioned by UK-based art program 14-18 NOW, The Imperial War Museum, and the Lakes Festival, to participate in commemorating the 100-year anniversary of World War I. As a result, in 2016 McKean released Black Dog: The Dreams of Paul Nash, a 120-page graphic novel that interprets the life of artist Paul Nash through the psychological space of Nash’s dreams, McKean creates a visual storyline that vacillates between Nash’s childhood, his time as a soldier and war artist, and the proceeding years. Within the works a black dog often appears, staying with Nash throughout his life, morphing in symbolism from savior to oppressor. Analogous to the surreal quality of Paul Nash’s own body of work, McKean explores the life of Nash with a hazy hypnogogic lens, where attention is paid to scars left on the psyche from the traumas of war. Throughout the work, McKean creates poignant moments with washes of green and painted details to illustrate nature’s desire to reclaim a devasted landscape. These gestures are a response to Nash’s writings as an artist and soldier during conflict where a blade of grass can hold promise. Dave McKean was born in Taplow, Berkshire in 1963. Between 1982-1986 he attended the Berkshire College of Art and Design. In 1986, McKean met author Neil Gaiman with whom a prolific collaboration was born. Beginning with their first book Violent Cases (1987), and most notably McKean’s cover illustrations for all of the popular Sandman comic series. In 1989, Scottish writer Grant Morrison teamed with McKean to create Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth; more commonly known Batman: Arkham Asylum. The work garnered critical acclaim and is considered by many as one of the greatest Batman stories of all time. Between 1990-1996 McKean wrote and illustrated Cages for which he was awarded the Harvey Award for Best New Comic and Best Graphic Novel, the Ignatz Award, and the International Alph Art award. In 2014 McKean was awarded the Victoria Albert Museum Illustrated Book of Year for his collection of short stories Pictures That Tick. Dave McKean lives on the Isle of Oxneyh in Kent, England. .

Recent and seminal work done to validate the comics and graphic novel medium includes Rocco Versaci’s This Book Contains Graphic Language, Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics, and Douglas Wolk’s Reading Comics. Arguments from these and other scholars and writers suggest that significant graphic novels about the Batman, one of the most popular and iconic characters ever produced—including Frank Miller, Klaus Janson, and Lynn Varley’s Dark Knight Returns, Grant Morrison and Dave McKean’s Arkham Asylum, and Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s Killing Joke—can provide unique complexity not found in prose-based novels and traditional films.     Sandman, Aesthetics and Canonisation Today I want to examine the ways in which Neil Gaiman’s Sandman has used narrative, format and aesthetic to move ever closer to the notion of the literary text. Particularly going to consider how it exploits the author function and enacts the struggle for cultural worth that comics seem consistently engaged in. Sandman is an epic series rewriting a golden-age superhero into an immortal deity. It is best remembered for its mythological content and literary references, and these elements have allowed it to claim its place as a canonised graphic novel (despite not actually being a singular GN but a maxi-series across multiple trade paperbacks!). Neil Gaiman’s authorship and authority dominate the text and epitomise Michel Foucault’s author function. But Sandman also draws heavily on mixed media and artistic variation and these aspects are less often discussed. Far from supporting a singular author function, Sandman’s visual style is multiple and varied. But despite this, in paratexts the artistic contributions are frequently subsumed into Gaiman’s authorship. However, a closer reading demonstrates that in fact this artistic variety destabilises clear-cut authorship and enacts the particular status struggles of comics as a collaborative medium struggling against the graphic novel branding. SLIDE: literary pix Sandman was launched in 1989 and became the flagship title for DC’s new Vertigo imprint. Vertigo’s publications contributed heavily to the mainstream cultural revaluation of comics as graphic novels, and critics such as Candace West have argued that Sandman in particular was instrumental here due to the attention the series received from mainstream media such as Rolling Stone magazine.

    Becoming Trivial: The Book Trailer By Kati Voigt Abstract Despite the introduction of audiobooks and e-books, printed stories still are in high demand. However, in a globalized world which is more and more ruled by mass media and technology, it is increasingly difficult for writers and publishers to promote their books. The solution is almost ironic: popular media, which is assumed to decrease readership, is turned into a tool to increase the number of readers. In 2002 the book trailer emerged as a new web-based marketing strategy for the launch of new books. Since then the appearance of the book trailer has changed considerably. The article examines specific examples and highlights methods that establish the relationship between the content of the book and its representation in the book trailer. Although guidelines apply for the production of book trailers, such as constraints relating to time and content, there are no limita- tions for the imagination of the producers. A book trailer may be simple, support- ed only by music and pictures, but they may also be as complex as short films. Additionally, book trailers are not limited to the promotion of one specific genre or age group. Depending on the viral potential of social networks such as YouTube, Facebook, and Tumblr book trailers reach a global audience and, there- fore, open up new markets. It can be argued, while book trailers have not yet reached the realm of the everyday, they will gradually come to the attention of academics and this article wants to present a starting point for this development.

Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 ABSTRACT Identity and Form in Alternative Comics, 1967 – 2007 In the late 1960s, underground cartoonists established the comic book form as a space for the exploration of personal identity. “Alternative” comics grew out of this tradition as subsequent writers produced work independently of the major comics publishers, aimed at an adult audience and encompassing a broad range of visual styles and narrative content. Throughout the past forty years, British, US and Canadian writers and artists have used this medium to explore questions of selfhood and perception, often implicitly or overtly relating these issues to the form, history and conventions of the comic book itself. Two main threads run through this discussion of the representation of selfhood: childhood and memory on the one hand and sexuality and gender on the other. This thesis argues that for many creators there exists a useful analogy between the comic book form and mental processes, specifically between the fractured, verbal-visual blend of the comics page and the organisation of human memory. It further suggests that the historical association of comics first with childhood, and subsequently with male adolescence, has conditioned the representation of selfhood in adult comics. Comic book consumption has often centred on a community of predominantly young, white, male, socially marginal readers, buying and collecting serialised narratives.
