BMW AG Presse. The story of an exception: the BMW M3 is 25. The anticipation began in August 1985. That summer Germany’s automobile magazines built up their readers’ expectations for the fastest 3 Series BMW of all times. The key data revealed a sports car that would punch way above its class: 200 hp, top speed in excess of 230 km/h, sprint from a standing start to 100 km/h inside 6.7 seconds. However, the story was that “the most dynamic BMW 3 Series drivers” would have to wait until mid-1986. The pundits were right on that count. But one prediction missed the mark by a mile: anyone who “wants to be in the A Team needs to be turbochar- ged under the bonnet”. Not true. The BMW M3 became the most successful touring car in motor-sport history. The M3 project was launched just a few months earlier. Production of the M1 mid-engine sports car had already been discontinued for some time and BMW CEO Eberhard Kuenheim commissioned a design for a successor, almost as an aside, according to legend. After one of his regular visits to Motorsport GmbH in Munich’s Preußenstraße he said, almost as he was lea- ving: “Mr. Rosche, we need a sporty engine for the 3 Series.” His aspi- ration was in good hands. Motorsport GmbH with its managing director of technical development Paul Rosche had demonstrated its expertise with the legendary 5 Series saloons driven by M engines as well as developing the Formula 1 turbo engine that powered Brazilian Nelson Piquet to win the World Championship in the Brabham BMW in 1983. -

As usual, BMW Motorsport will make many of its top drivers available for the 24-hour races. The ROWE Racing line-up for the classic in Spa-Francorchamps includes BMW DTM driver Maxime Martin, IWSC driver Dirk Werner, as well as Alexander Sims, Philipp Eng, Nick Catsburg and Stef Dusseldorp. BMW DTM driver Martin Tomczyk is also supporting team principal Roberto Ravaglia’s BMW Team Italia in the Pro-Am Cup. The Boutsen Ginion Racing team will also field one BMW M6 GT3 in the Pro-Am Cup, to be driven by Karim Ojjeh, Julian Darras and Olivier Grotz. As well as the 24-hour races, Schubert Motorsport and ROWE Racing will also complete an extensive race programme as customer racing teams in 2016. As it did last year, Schubert Motorsport will race in the ADAC GT Masters. Munich. BMW Team Schnitzer can look back on an impressive history at the Nürburgring 24 Hours (GER). Team principal Charly Lamm’s (GER) crew has won the endurance classic in the Eifel Mountains five times in the past. To mark the team’s return to the “Green Hell” this season, the number 43 BMW M6 GT3 will sport a special, historic design. BMW Team Schnitzer wrote the first chapter of its glorious history at the Nürburgring 24 Hours back in 1989. The team from Freilassing (GER) claimed its first overall victory at the endurance classic on the Nordschleife in the same year as it won its maiden DTM title. After 143 laps of racing, eventual DTM champion Roberto Ravaglia, Emanuele Pirro (both ITA) and Fabien Giroix (FRA) crossed the finish line first in the iconic BMW M3 E30. In memory of this success BMW Team Schnitzer will return to the Eifel track in 2017 with one of the two BMW M6 GT3s sporting the same historic design as the winning car from 1989.
