Courtney Parker CSU Bakersfield Martin Cassé UT-Pan American Matt Perri Houston Baptist 2013 Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track Championships May 3-5 ♦ Turner Stadium ♦ Humble, Texas Hosted by Houston Baptist University McKell Camp-Nielson Utah Valley Jonathan Daudelin NJIT Alisha Wren Chicago State Note: The facility map above details locations for events and services during the GWC Championships. Entry will be through the gates at the scoreboard end of the stadium, adjacent to the parking area. Dear Participants, Family Members, Friends and Fans, After a successful event here in Humble last season, the Great West returns to Turner Stadium for the 2013 Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The 250 student-athletes who are competing at this state of the art track and field complex have hopes of advancing to the NCAA regional competition in two weeks. The staff at Houston Baptist University has done a wonderful job preparing for this championship, which should be the peak of the season for the competing student-athletes and coaches from each Great West institution. We are looking for a very competitive outdoor championship as many league records fell and new champions were crowned during our indoor championship in late February just south of here at the University of Houston. Host Houston Baptist captured both the men’s and women’s indoor titles, stopping reigning champion Utah Valley which finished as runner-up on both the men’s and women’s side. With six institutions competing this weekend, we anticipate having several student-athletes advance to NCAA regional competition either in Greensboro, N.C, or Austin, Texas, with an opportunity to compete in the NCAA Championships, June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore.

The NAIA’s first general session of the ‘organizing convention’ was under the auspices of the National Association of Intercollegiate Basketball (NAIB) and was held in the Phillips Hotel in Kansas City, Mo., on Sunday, March 10, 1940. In 1952, as a result of the expressed desires of the member institutions, appropriate steps were taken by which the NAIB was transformed into the NAIA, and the first all-encompassing set of rules and standards were adopted. With the Association's new name came the addition of national champion- ships in golf, tennis and outdoor track and field. Football, cross country, baseball and swimming and diving were added to the championships calen- dar in 1956. Wrestling (1958), soccer (1959), bowling (1962-78), gymnastics (1964-84), indoor track and field (1966) and men's volleyball (1969-80) were later additions.
