This violence tracking initiative reveals that potential for violence in Ondo state is rising and many of the massive peace interventions to mitigate vio- lence before, during and after the governorship election are still absent. This is not far from the fact that Edo state governorship election naturally took away attention from all the happenings in Ondo State.     PRESS RELEASE Ondo Guber pre-election poll- Close race between Akeredolu and Oke With significant proportion of undecided voters Abuja, Nigeria. November 22nd 2016 – In the race to the Ondo State Governorship election, a new public opinion poll conducted by NOIPolls has revealed a close race between Rotimi Akeredolu, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Olusola Oke, candidate of the Alliance for Democracy (AD); with a 1 percent point difference between both candidates. The poll was conducted in the week commencing 14th November 2016 and it sought to measure the level of preparedness of Ondo State residents for the forthcoming Gubernatorial election slated for 26th November 2016. When asked which candidate respondents will be casting their vote for, the result puts Akeredolu in a slight lead with 24%, over Olusola Oke with 23%. Interestingly, respondents also mentioned two candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with Eyitayo Jegede (11%) trending ahead of the candidate currently listed by INEC, Jimoh Ibrahim (7%). Other candidates mentioned include Olu Agunloye (4%) and Francis Adeyemi Alao (2%) of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) respectively. However, a significant proportion of voters, 29%, remain undecided as to who they will cast their vote for on election day. It is worth noting from the poll that Olusola Oke seems to be gaining huge momentum as a consolation candidate swinging support across party lines; especially from the PDP where most supporters of one of the candidates, Eyitayo Jegede, disclosed that they would cast their votes in favour of Olusola Oke if the party does not resolve its internal crisis.

This is capable of revealing the motivations of the stances expressed by participants, thus providing clearer insights into their positions on issues. Existing works have hitherto concentrated on campaign speeches and interviews of individual candidates to the neglect of competitive encounters. This is a gap this study attempts to fill. The study adopts a combination of Brown and Levinson (1987) politeness and facework, Watts’ (2003, 2005) relational work and frame theory. The final session of the Ondo State governorship election media debate of 2012 involving the three major political parties formed the bulk of the data. The data was electronically recorded and transcribed into the written mode for analysis. Two types of verbal behaviour (polite and impolite), projected by three context-driven politeness strategies (persuasive, offensive and defensive), marked contestants’ utterances. While persuasive politeness strategy (exemplified by promising and testimonial argument) projects polite verbal behaviour, offensive and defensive politeness strategies (deployed by contestants to categorise and construct one another as corrupt, inept, incompetent, unfit, dishonest, deceitful) project impolite verbal behaviour.
