I thank them for their support in all areas. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4, verse 5 ABSTRACT Previous studies on news in electronic media in Nigeria have mostly concentrated on linguistic and stylistic features with little attention on discourse strategies and underlying ideological factors considered to be significant in the construction and full understanding of radio news. There is need for more attention to be paid to ideologies and discourse strategies in media discourse as they enhance the comprehension of radio news. This study, therefore, investigated the discourse strategies and political ideologies in selected radio news of Osun State Broadcasting Corporation, (OSBC), with a view to revealing the interaction between the strategies and ideologies. The OSBC was selected for its unique engagements with political ideologies. The study was carried out within the framework of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) which links the text with underlying power relations and ideologies, using Wodak‟s socio- historical and van Dijk‟s socio-cognitive models. These are complemented with Halliday‟s Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) for its emphasis on the form/function relationship in language use. A total of 1000 written news reports from the OSBC were collected between April 2007 and November 2010, out of which 250 (25%) were purposively sampled, based on their political contents. The period was selected because of the political tension that characterized the election situation in the State during the regime of Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola. A content analysis of the news was carried out using the tools of SFG and CDA. Three major political ideologies namely, historicist, humanitarian, and welfarist, were observed to influence the deployment of specific discourse strategies in the construction of political news in the OSBC radio during the regime of Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola. Government was projected as welfarist and humanitarian in its political agenda. Historicist ideology was characterised by the use of temporality and historical comparison of events. The linguistic tool of lexicalisation was used to foreground the humanitarian and welfarist ideologies of the government. The historicist ideology was characterised by the use of transitive clauses with a high degree of transitivity which comprised spatio-temporal adverbials and verbal choices for detailed material, mental and relational processes representing the actions and activities of prominent political actors in the news events. For humanitarian and welfarist ideologies, the strategies utilised were blame transfer, source avoidance, positive self-presentation and negative other-presentation, foregrounding of figures and statistics, manipulation, and authoritarianism. Blame transfer exonerated the political actors from the ills of the society and shifted the blame on the opponents. Events that 6 portrayed the ruling political party positively and the opposition negatively were emphasised and given prominence while those that portrayed the ruling party negatively and the opponents positively were defocussed. There is a close interaction between political ideology and the discourse strategies used to project it in OSBC radio news texts. This interaction throws useful insights into the ideational process that is crucial in the construction of radio news.

Interestingly, respondents also mentioned two candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with Eyitayo Jegede (11%) trending ahead of the candidate currently listed by INEC, Jimoh Ibrahim (7%). Other candidates mentioned include Olu Agunloye (4%) and Francis Adeyemi Alao (2%) of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) respectively. However, a significant proportion of voters, 29%, remain undecided as to who they will cast their vote for on election day. It is worth noting from the poll that Olusola Oke seems to be gaining huge momentum as a consolation candidate swinging support across party lines; especially from the PDP where most supporters of one of the candidates, Eyitayo Jegede, disclosed that they would cast their votes in favour of Olusola Oke if the party does not resolve its internal crisis.

    Press release Abuja, 26 July 2021 ASF France urges Nigeria to refrain from executions, calls for action to reduce awaiting trial population in Custodial centres Avocats Sans Frontières France (Lawyers Without Borders France) is deeply concerned by the recent recommendations offered by the Minister of Interior as a means to decongesting prisons all over the country. The Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola on Friday, 24th July 2021 speaking at the inauguration of the Osun State Command headquarters complex of the Nigeria Correctional Service in Osogbo, urged state governors to sign the death warrants of three thousand and eight (3008) detainees as a means to decongest correctional facilities nationwide. It is worrisome to learn that out of the total prison population of 68,747 inmates, only 17,755 inmates are the actual convicts with 50,992 inmates representing about 74% are awaiting trial. The statistics as revealed by the Minister clearly shows that the current congestion in Nigerian Prisons is as a result of the disturbing high number of awaiting trial inmates and not the minority population on death row. In our view, a more constructive approach would be a declaration of a state of emergency in Nigeria’s criminal justice system with programs and initiatives rolled out to tackle the slow pace of justice delivery in Nigeria. This should be done with a view to reducing the awaiting trial population, many of whom have spent 8 years or more awaiting trial. The call for execution by the Minister comes at a time when many countries across the globe and particularly in Africa continue to move away from using the death penalty due to its injustices.

Although, there is hardly any country in the world where instances of bribery or political corruption are not present in their national politics, researches on Africa‟s postcolonial history, have however shown that, in Africa, corruption is an institutionalized and a systemic practice affecting not only the postcolonial state itself, but also the majority of the citizenry. Using Nigeria, as a case study, this paper argues that since the 1964/1965 Western Region elections to the 2007 general elections, there has hardly been any election conducted in Nigeria without associated cases of corrupt practices such as vote buying, ballot snatching, election rigging, election violence, political and legislative lobbying etc. The aftermath of this or its cumulative effective, is better seen when the number of years spent by Nigeria under the military is weighed against the number of years it spent under civilian administration. Using the peripheral political economy approach, this paper opines that the problem of flawed elections in Nigeria should be traced more to the nature and character of the Nigerian colonial state, prebendal politics among Nigerian politicians, imperial capitalism, primitive accumulation of capital as well as the nature and character of class contestations among various interest groups in contemporary Nigeria .
