Ondo Governorship Pre-Elections Poll
PRESS RELEASE Ondo Guber pre-election poll- Close race between Akeredolu and Oke With significant proportion of undecided voters Abuja, Nigeria. November 22nd 2016 – In the race to the Ondo State Governorship election, a new public opinion poll conducted by NOIPolls has revealed a close race between Rotimi Akeredolu, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Olusola Oke, candidate of the Alliance for Democracy (AD); with a 1 percent point difference between both candidates. The poll was conducted in the week commencing 14th November 2016 and it sought to measure the level of preparedness of Ondo State residents for the forthcoming Gubernatorial election slated for 26th November 2016. When asked which candidate respondents will be casting their vote for, the result puts Akeredolu in a slight lead with 24%, over Olusola Oke with 23%. Interestingly, respondents also mentioned two candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with Eyitayo Jegede (11%) trending ahead of the candidate currently listed by INEC, Jimoh Ibrahim (7%). Other candidates mentioned include Olu Agunloye (4%) and Francis Adeyemi Alao (2%) of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) respectively. However, a significant proportion of voters, 29%, remain undecided as to who they will cast their vote for on election day. It is worth noting from the poll that Olusola Oke seems to be gaining huge momentum as a consolation candidate swinging support across party lines; especially from the PDP where most supporters of one of the candidates, Eyitayo Jegede, disclosed that they would cast their votes in favour of Olusola Oke if the party does not resolve its internal crisis. -

ABSTRACT The article interrogated whether defections or party switching by elected officers, both in Nigeria‟s executive and legislative arms of government, constitutes a nuisance capable of undermining the country‟s nascent democracy or can be treated as a catalyst to ingrain democratic reforms in the country. This question has become a subject of increasing concerns in view of the influx of defections by elected officers from one political party to the other in recent times, especially before and after election periods, without the slightest compunction. It was discovered in the article that though the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) has made significant provisions regarding prohibition of defection, except in deserving cases, yet elected officers go about „party-prostituting‟ with reckless abandon. The article concludes that political party defections by elected officers, if left unchecked, may amount to a nuisance capable of undermining the democratic processes in Nigeria in the long run. -

Accepted 16 September, 2009 This study takes a critical look at the ways through which political office holders manipulated recruitment into the public service of Ondo State between 1999 and 2003. It holds that the phenomenal rise in the size of the public service of Ondo state during this period was due largely to political exertion; something akin to the spoils systems in the 18th century United States. The cost implication of this increase was adjudged disturbing as 65.31% of the revenue accruable to the State goes to the payment of the emolument of these public servants who constitute just 1% of the entire population. This paper notes the complacency of the top echelon of the public service as regards the abandonment of the merit system in recruitment in to the public service during this period. It concludes that the implications of this phenomenal rise in the size of the public service, including the manner of accomplishing it are of far reaching implications for the public service and the society. INTRODUCTION Ondo is one of the six states that make up the South West geopolitical zone of Nigeria. It has interstate boundaries with Ekiti and Kogi states to the north, Edo State to the east, Delta State to the southeast, Osun State to the northwest and Ogun State to the southwest. The Gulf of Guinea lies to its south and its capital is Akure. ONDO: THE FACTS AND FIGURES Dubbed as the Sunshine State, Ondo, which was created on February 3, 1976, has a population of 3,441,024 persons (2006 census) distributed across 18 local councils within a land area of 14,788.723 Square Kilometres. Located in the South-West geo-political zone of Nigeria, Ondo State is bounded in the North by Ekiti/Kogi states; in the East by Edo State; in the West by Oyo and Ogun states, and in the South by the Atlantic Ocean. Ondo State is a multi-ethnic state with the majority being Yoruba while there are also the Ikale, Ilaje, Arogbo and Akpoi, who are of Ijaw extraction and inhabit the riverine areas of the state. The state plays host to 880 public primary schools, and 190 public secondary schools and a number of tertiary institutions including the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State Polytechnic, Owo, Federal College of Agriculture, Akure and Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo. Arguably, Ondo is one of the most resource-endowed states of Nigeria. It is agriculturally rich with agriculture contributing about 75 per cent of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The main revenue yielding crops are cocoa, palm produce and timber. -

Ekiti State, Nigeria ABSTRACT The genuine development of the grassroots particularly in the developing societies depends largely on the participation of the rural populace in policy conception and implementation, especially in the area of development policies; fundamentally the rural people play a vital and significant role in economic and political development of the nation. This is because the bulk of economic produce as well as votes come from these areas. However, the much needed development has continued to elude the rural communities in spite of the various development policies carried out by successive governments in the state. This paper therefore critically assessed the 31s initiative of the present government in Ondo State with a view to know its impact on rural development. The paper relied on both primary and secondary data to source its information. The paper submitted that 31s initiative has impacted positively on the lives of rural dwellers in Ondo State, most especially in the areas of infrastructure, integrated development, participatory skills e.t.c. Local Institutions, Fetish Oaths and Blind Loyalties to Political Godfathers in South-Western Nigeria Olusegun Afuape, Lagos State Polytechnic, Lagos, Nigeria The IAFOR North American Conference on the Social Sciences Official Conference Proceedings 2014 Abstract This paper examines the involvement of traditional rulers and other institutions such as Community Development Association (CDA) and Community Development Council (CDC) in the mobilization for both local and General Elections in south- western Nigeria. It argues that the upgrading of some village heads to the position of kings, together with the creation of the position where it was hitherto non-existent, as well as secret but fetish oaths of loyalty sworn to by political sons/daughters to guarantee their loyalty, is deliberately done with a view to using them as a veritable tool to mobilize for grassroots support during General Elections. Using interview and observation, the conceptual framework for this study is David Easton's system analysis and this is augmented with the theory of violence as espoused by Hannah Arendt and Jenny Pearce. The problems created by the politicization of these institutions are blind loyalty of traditional leaders, politicians and members of community associations to the political Godfathers, deification of these Godfathers, imposition of unpopular and incompetent candidates in political offices, misappropriation of public funds and all manner of corruption, among others. Hence, the required remedies to these factors are proffered after which this paper concludes that for violence to disappear, there is the need for political gladiators and electorate to desist and resist the politicization of local institutions and the installation of literate and non-violent candidates as either a village head or a king. -

The Outlook for Ondo: Votes and Violence OCTOBER 2020 Introduction On the 10 October 2020, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will conduct the sixth governorship election in Ondo State since the restoration of democracy in 1999. The state, in Nigeria’s south-west geo-political zone, is currently held by the All Progressive Congress (APC) and is strategic in protecting the APCs political hegemony in the zone. Although 17 parties have registered candidates, only three have a chance of winning: the APC, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP). The defection of the incumbent deputy governor, Agboola Ajayi, from the APC and his subsequent emergence as the governorship candidate of ZLP, raised the stakes in the elections. This report provides an overview of the political environment leading up to the election. Specifically, it analyses the strength of the three major political parties and their candidates by thoroughly examining the history of votes and voting pattern, political alliances, and election-related violence. The Candidates Agboola Ajayi (ZLP) is the current deputy governor of Ondo State, a lawyer by training and a grassroots politician. He was a ward chairman in the defunct Alliance for Democracy (AD), a former chairman of Ese- Odo local government area (LGA) and is a former member of the House of Representatives. Former governor of the state, Dr Olusegun Mimiko (2009-2017), was a member of his ZLP party. The APC candidate, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, is the incumbent governor of the state. Prior to his election in 2017, he was the Ondo State Attorney-General and Commissioner of Justice, a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association and a failed gubernatorial aspirant, having contested and lost the governorship elections in 2012 on the platform of the now defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).
