The irequent poisoning' from eating' the root of Cowbane (CicIda maeulata, L) are not infrequent in the state of Iowa and elsewhere. It affects man, cattle and horses. Every now and then, there are ac­ counts of poisoning from “wild parsnips” in our papers. The writer has at various times received communications with specimens of “wild parsnips.” The subJect is of considerable interest and especially so because the plant is widely distributed in Iowa and a large number of people are not aware of the poisonous nature of the root. Spotted Cowbane is a member of the Carrot family or as it is known botani- cally, Umbelliferae.* The family contains many important plants like the carrot, pars­ ley, celery, valued for their food, while others like the caraway (Carum carui), Eovage (Ligusticum), A nise (Pimpinella Anisium) Asafoetida (Fer- lua Narthex and F, Scorodosnui) Coriandrum seeds (Coriandrum sativum) have aromatic properties and are used for culinary and medicinal pur­ poses.

Environ. 36(1): 19-29, 2013 Comparison of environmental characteristics at Cicuta virosa habitats, an endangered species in South Korea Cha Jeong Shin, Jong Min Nam, Jae Geun Kim* Department of Biology Education, Seoul National University, Seoul 151-748, Korea Abstract Cicuta virosa is an endangered species in Korea, which is a southern marginal area. To conserve and restore habitats of this plant, we investigated water and soil environmental characteristics and vegetation at four habitats during the grow- ing season. The C. virosa habitats differed in community structure, water and substrate properties, and water regime. Although the total distribution ranges of the water and soil environments for C. virosa were wide and overlapped with the optimal environmental range of distribution of accompanying species, the optimal water level range for C. virosa was defined as 7 ± 3.5 cm. Water level was adjusted by substrate structure such as a mound of P. japonica and a floating mat comprised of accompanying species. A floating mat was an aid to maintain an optimal and stable water level in deep or fluctuating water and to prevent strong competition with prolific macrophytes. The GS sampling site, which had floating mats, could be a good model for C. virosa conservation in a warm temperate region, whereas the PC sampling sites, which experienced a water shortage in spring, provided a clue about the decline in C. virosa population size.     453 Phylogenetic relationships within Cicuta (Apiaceae tribe Oenantheae) inferred from nuclear rDNA ITS and cpDNA sequence data Chang-Shook Lee and Stephen R. Downie Abstract: The genus Cicuta (Apiaceae tribe Oenantheae Dumort.) is the most virulently poisonous group of flowering plants native to the north temperate zone. A recent treatment recognized four species (C. bulbifera L., C. douglasii (DC.) J.M. Coult. & Rose, C. maculata L., and C. virosa L.), with C. maculata divided into four varieties. We present results of phylogenetic analyses of the nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA) internal transcribed spacer (ITS) locus and the region bounded by the chloroplast genes psbI and trnK 5’ exon to determine taxonomic limits and relationships among these taxa, and to assess the taxonomic status of C. douglasii, a polyploid thought to be derived from C. maculata and C. virosa. Ci- cuta bulbifera and C. virosa are each resolved as monophyletic, the latter is a sister group to all other species. Discordance between the ITS- and plastid-derived phylogenies and lack of resolution in the ITS trees preclude unequivocal hypotheses of relationship; all trees do suggest, however, that the allotetraploid C. douglasii is polyphyletic and possibly polytopic, with all examined accessions but one nested within C. maculata. This single outstanding accession is from California and, pending further study, might warrant recognition as a distinct species. The diploid C. bulbifera may also be of hybrid ori- gin, as revealed by significant discordance between data sets. Within C. maculata, only the western North American var. angustifolia Hook. is resolved in the ITS trees. In the cpDNA trees, C.

It is a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist, which leads to inhibition of the nervous system, eventually causing death by suffocation in mammals. Coniine’s most famous victim is Socrates who was sentenced to death by poison chalice containing poison hemlock in 399 BC. In chemistry, coniine holds two historical records: It is the first alkaloid the chemical structure of which was established (in 1881), and that was chemically synthesized (in 1886). In plants, coniine and twelve closely related alkaloids are known from poison hemlock (Conium maculatum L.), and several Sarracenia and Aloe species. Recent work confirmed its biosynthetic polyketide origin. Biosynthesis commences by carbon backbone formation from butyryl-CoA and two malonyl-CoA building blocks catalyzed by polyketide synthase. A transamination reaction incorporates nitrogen from L-alanine and non-enzymatic cyclization leads to γ-coniceine, the first hemlock alkaloid in the pathway. Ultimately, reduction of γ-coniceine to coniine is facilitated by NADPH-dependent γ-coniceine reductase. Although coniine is notorious for its toxicity, there is no consensus on its ecological roles, especially in the carnivorous pitcher plants where it occurs. Lately there has been renewed interest in coniine’s medical uses particularly for pain relief without an addictive side effect.

Family: Apiaceae/Umbelliferae Genus: Cicuta Species: virosa English Vernacular Name: Mac Kenzie’s water hemlock Habitat: The plant is indigenous to Europe and Asia. Parts used: The homeopathic remedy Cicuta is prepared from the freshly expressed sap of the Cicuta or water hemlock plant. The root’s juice is collected when the plant is just beginning to blossom and blended with equal proportion of alcohol to prepare the medicine. Plant description: It is a native species of northern and central Europe , northern Asia and northwestern North America . It is a perennial herbaceous plant which grows up to 1–2 m tall. The stems are smooth, branching, swollen at the base, purple-striped, and hollow except for partitions at the junction of the leaves and stem. In cross section the stems have one flat side and the other sides are rounded. The leaves are alternate, tri-pinnate, only coarsely toothed, unlike the ferny, lacy leaves found in many other members of the family Apiaceae. The flowers are small, white and clustered in umbrella shaped inflorescences typical of the family. The many flowered umbellets have unequal pedicels that range from 5 to 11 cm long during fruiting. An oily, yellow liquid oozes from cuts to the stems and roots. This liquid has a rank smell resembling that of parsnips or carrots. The plant may be mistaken for parsnip due to its clusters of white tuberous roots . In recent years Merchiston their poisons have been shown to be polyacetylenes (n-C2H2). The plants Edinburgh EH11 1NN closely resemble two of the most common plants in the family Apiaceae UK (Umbelliferae), celery and parsley. Unwittingly, they are ingested by naive foragers and death occurs very rapidly. The third plant Anamirta derives from South-East Asia and contains a powerful convulsant, picrotoxin, which has been used from time immemorial to catch sh, and more recently to poison Birds of Paradise. All three poisons have been shown to block the γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) system in the human brain that normally has a powerful inhibitory neuronal action. It has also been established that two groups of sedative drugs, barbiturates and benzodiazepines, exert their inhibitory action by stimulating the GABA system. These drugs are the treatments of choice for poisoning by the three vicious plants. The share of leaf-miner species in the tephritid fly fauna of the region is 10.2%. Cornutrypeta svetlanae Richter & Shcherbakov, 2000, recorded from four regions, is the most numerous and widely distributed species preferring forest belt in the mountains of Kuznetskii Alatau (Kemerovskaya Oblast and Khakassia), North Altai (Republic of Altai) and West Altai (Altaiskii Krai). Two species are registered in only one region, namely Cornutrypeta spinifrons (Schroeder, 1913) in the forest belt of the Kuznetskii Alatau mountains (Kemerovskaya Oblast) and Hemilea dimidiata (Costa, 1844) in the forest meadows of Tomskaya Oblast. The rarest species in the region areCornutrypeta spinifrons (Schroeder, 1913) and Trypeta zoe Meigen, 1826 known by single or several specimens only.
