Kickboxing Official Grading Syllabus Traditional Japanese, ChineseKickboxing Official grading syllabus Traditional Japanese, Chinese & Okinawan Martial arts Price £2.50 Kickboxing – A Brief history Tatsuo Yamada, who established "Nihon Kempo Karate-do", was interested in Muay Thai because he wanted to perform Karate matches with full-contact rules since practitioners are not allowed to hit each other directly in karate matches. Yamada had already announced his plan which was named "The draft principles of project of establishment of a new sport and its industrialization" in November 1959 and he proposed the tentative name of "Karate-boxing" for this new sport. Yamada started studying with a Muay Thai champion, formerly his son Kan Yamada's sparring partner. Osamu Noguchi who was a promoter of boxing and was also interested in Muay Thai took the Thai fighter and developed a combined martial art of karate and Thai boxing and creating the term kickboxing in the 1950s. In 1963 three karate fighters from Oyama dojo (Kyokushinkai Karate) went to the Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Thailand, and fought against 3 Muay Thai fighters winning two of the three bouts. The three fighters' names were Tadashi Nakamura, Kenji Kurosaki and Akio Fujihira (also known as Noboru Osawa). The original kickboxing allowed throwing and butting in the beginning to distinguish it from the Muay Thai style, although this was later dropped. The Kickboxing Association, the first kickboxing sanctioning body, was founded by Osamu Noguchi in 1966 soon after that. Then the first kickboxing event was held in Osaka on the 11th April 1966. Tatsu Yamada died in 1967; his dojo changed its name to Suginami Gym, and kept sending fighters off to support kickboxing.

Yang Date August 2013 Name Lysanne ter Brugge (5732247) Egelantiersgracht 550A 1015 RR Amsterdam [email protected] 0648626109 i Foreword This thesis is the conclusion of my master Human Geography at the University of Amsterdam. After an intensive year of learning about cities, places, people and human activities, it was time to write my thesis. Luckily, I had the opportunity to let many of my interests come together in this thesis: new urban cities, time use, international orientation and my curiosity to understand different cultural views. The topic about urban Chinese middle class families has kept me interested until the end. I could not have written this thesis without the help of others. First, I would like to thank my supervisor professor Arnold Reijndorp and his co-tutor MSc. Ching Wen Yang, who provided me valuable input to get back on track when I felt lost in the topic. Furthermore, I would like to thank INTI for providing us the opportunity and financial support to do research in Shenzhen. Furthermore, I am grateful to all the anonymous Chinese respondents for their cooperation. The many inspiring interviews gave me insight in the lives of these middle class families in Shenzhen.

For the publication of this book, I would like to specially thank Miss Jaguar To from Force One Hong Kong who made this book possible. She was my student and the first woman who had the courage to open a gym not operated by a man. I admire her for all the work she has done and still is doing for Muay Thai as she has suffered enormous personal losses and harm yet still has a good mood and a great mind. In addition, you can find her in the gym every day. I also would like to thank Zheng Wang, my Chinese translator, who always steers my work and helps me to perfect it. I would also like to thank my children Arayana, Anoma and Erawan van der Veere.
