For tourism businesses operating in an ever more competitive marketplace, identifying and responding to the needs and wants of their customers, and understanding how the product or consumer experience is created is arguably essential. -
Eisteddfod Branding
The National Eisteddfod The National Eisteddfod is Wales’ largest festival, held alternately in north and south Wales, celebrating the Welsh language and culture of Wales. Its history can be traced back to the court of the Lord Rhys in 1176, with the modern day Eisteddfod held every year bar one since 1861. The festival has evolved and developed greatly over the past ten years, with over 1,000 events held across the Maes (site) during the eight-day festival. The Eisteddfod also plays host to over 200 competitions, with many of these held in the main Pavilion during the week. The other events are held across the Maes, some in semi- permanent buildings and others in attractive tents and yurts, such as Tŷ Gwerin and Caffi Maes B. We know the Eisteddfod and the community project are unique. Our brand needs to celebrate and embrace this uniqueness. Information on the festival and all events can be found online, www.eisteddfod.wales The project The Eisteddfod is looking to rebrand the festival and the organisation over the next year. The Eisteddfod festival is an iconic brand, the word itself is known across the world, and our brand needs to reflect this, with the word playing a central part in any graphic. Typography is very important to us. With so many events and activities held during the week and the community project, the typography must be strong and instantly recognisable – emphasising the uniqueness of the festival and the project and its central place in the culture of Wales. The successful agency will need to deliver a brand which overcomes a number of challenges. -

185 MEDAL Y CYMMRODORION 2016 / THE CYMMRODORION MEDAL 2016 Presented to Jan Morris 9 October 2016 The Welsh historian, author, and travel writer, Jan Morris CBE FRSL FLSW, who celebrated her ninetieth birthday in October 2016, was awarded the Medal of the Cymmrodorion Society during a ceremony held at the Tŷ Newydd Writing Centre in Llanystumdwy, near Criccieth, on Sunday 9 October 2016. The Medal was awarded ‘for her distinguished contribution to literature and to Wales’. Following an introduction by the Society’s President, Professor Prys Morgan, the Presentation Address was given by Professor Jason Walford Davies of the School of Welsh at Bangor University, who spoke of Jan Morris’s immense contribution to Welsh writing in English and of the value of her work and its cultural significance in Welsh, British, and international contexts. Jan Morris, who lives in Llanystumdwy with her partner, Elizabeth, has been writing and publishing books since the 1950s. She is known particularly for the Pax Britannica trilogy (1968–78), a history of the British Empire; for various books on Wales, including Wales: Epic Views of a Small Country (first published as The Matter of Wales in 1984); and for portraits of cities, notably Oxford, Venice, Trieste, Hong Kong, and New York. Jan Morris has received honorary doctorates from the University of Wales and the University of Glamorgan, is an Honorary Fellow of Christ Church, Oxford, and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and of the Learned Society of Wales. She was appointed CBE in 1999 and, in 2005, she was awarded the Golden PEN Award by English PEN for ‘a Lifetime’s Distinguished Service to Literature’. -

The newsletter of the Federation of Museums & Art Galleries of Wales April 2011 The 2010 Federation AGM, Llanberis In November each year the Federation holds its AGM in a prominent museum or gallery and alternates between North & South Wales. In 2010 the AGM was hosted by the National Slate Museum in Llanberis and the keynote speaker was the new Director General of Amgueddfa Cymru, David Anderson. The event took place in the museum’s Padarn Room, one of two available conference / education rooms. The Federation President, Rachael Rogers (Monmouthshire Museums Service) presented the Federation’s Annual Report for 2009/10 and the The Padarn Room, National Slate Honorary Treasurer, Susan Dalloe (Denbighshire Federation President, Rachael Rogers and keynote speaker, Museum, Llanvberis Director-General of NMW / AC, David Anderson, at the AGM Heritage Service) presented the annual accounts. Following election of Committee Members and other business, David Anderson then gave his talk to the Members. Having only been in his current post as Director General of Amgueddfa Cymru for six weeks, Mr Anderson not only talked of his career and museum experiences that led to his appointment but also asked the Federation Members for their contributions on the Welsh museum and gallery sector and relationships between the differing museums and the National Museum Wales. Following a delicious lunch served in the museum café, the afternoon was spent in a series of workshops with all Members contributing ideas for the Federation’s forthcoming Advocacy strategy and Members toolkit. The Advocacy issue is very important to the Federation especially in the current economic climate and so, particularly if you were unable to attend the AGM, the following article is to encourage your contribution: How Can You Develop an Advocacy Strategy? The Federation is well on its way to finalising an advocacy strategy for museums in Wales. -
