Box 176, East Lyme, CT 06333 and Salem Public Schools 200 Hartford Road, Salem, CT 06420 March 2007 Dear Parents/Guardians: Summer time should be a relaxing time…a time for many outdoor activities. However, when we need a break from the humidity…there is nothing quite as enticing as a shady spot and a good book. Students are encouraged to read by themselves, with a friend, or a parent/guardian. Reading and sharing with friends or family is always fun! There are many choices for every taste and interest. The school librarians, as a result of conversations with the town librarians, will make sure that titles are available during the summer months at the East Lyme Public Library and Salem Public Library. Also, bookstores in the vicinity will be given the reading list. Selections that are used in your child’s reading/ language classes are not included on the list. In June students will be given a copy of Read and Let the Sun Shine In in their library class which lists books suggested for summer reading. Copies will also be available in each school office, and available on the district-wide website. Please join the East Lyme and Salem educators and librarians in promoting a safe and relaxing summer, filled with wonderful books! Remember, “Adults who consider themselves lifelong readers often point out the influence of a parent or other adult who served as a model of someone who valued reading.” * Thus, parents who encourage children to read in the summer are, indeed, demonstrating their value of reading! Sincerely, Dr. Paul Smotas Dr. Donna Leake Superintendent Superintendent East Lyme School District Salem School District Paul Freeman Dr. Karen Costello Assistant Superintendent Administrator for Program Improvement East Lyme School District East Lyme School District * “Helping Your Child Become A Reader” (IRA Brochure), 1989. Dear Children, Welcome to a great summer of reading fun! Whether you read while on a hiking trip, under a tree, on the beach, or in a comfortable chair, we hope you have a great time. Please read what interests you. We hope you will read different kinds of books, as well as magazines. Don’t forget to list the harder books that you read with a parent or friend. Look for other reading lists at the public libraries as well. Students entering grades 3 and 4 are asked to read at least one fiction and one non-fiction book. Please turn in the two review forms at the end of this packet to your classroom teacher by Friday, September 7, 2007. School librarians will collect them. It is encouraged, but not required, that students entering grades 1 and 2 read and complete the book review form included in this packet. In creating the list, we looked for new titles and old favorites that are in print. We looked for a variety of fiction and non-fiction selections. Please help us . if you think we missed some great titles, use the pages provided and add titles! Remember to bring your page of additional titles to the school librarian when you return to school in September. Enjoy your summer full of reading experiences!
