 Maine State Director Lauri Sidelko (University of Maine) spent much of the spring and early summer of 2017 recruiting an advisory board. The State Director conducted monthly advisory board meetings for planning and training. Monthly e-mail communications have been sent to the state membership to update them on current NASPA and Maine events.

 New Hampshire State Director Mike Taberski (New England College) reported that the majority of the past year in NASPA New Hampshire was spent reconnecting with state members and attempting to gain members on the state leadership board. A survey was administered in July 2017 to gain an understanding from the state membership of what they were looking for from the N.H. state leadership in terms of events, support, and other “wants.” While the state learned that members were interested in state specific events, the membership also stated that they were more interested in the Regional Conference as well as national NASPA events.

Between the survey and other conversations with the membership and leadership, it was also agreed upon that NASPA NH members are connected through other organizations as well (such as the state conduct organization, state housing/residence life organization, and other task forces). It was thus decided that the best option for an event in the past year would be to partner with another organization. As will be discussed in the following report section, the state partnered with the New Hampshire Campus Compact to host a fall 2017 event. During the next year, the state board will continue to recruit members for state leadership with the goal of having a representative from each institution in the state of New Hampshire.

 Rhode Island State Director Sharon Hay (Providence College) reported on the Rhode Island state award recipients. Richard F. Stevens Outstanding New Professional Award Recipient: Kelly Boutin, Assistant Director, PwC center for Diversity and Inclusion and Coordinator, Women’s Center and Pride Center, Bryant University.  Massachusetts State Director Jason Zelesky (Mount Wachusett Community College) reported that the MA NASPA board continues to send personal, “Welcome to MA NASPA” emails to all new members monthly. The board continues to utilize social media to send important information to MA members, solicit feedback and communicate about upcoming events, job vacancies, etc. In May 2017, current MA NASPA board members met to reorganize and restructure the composition of the board and the election/selection process to be more inclusive, diverse and welcoming. This process will begin in January 2018 with a new board taking office in March 2018 in conjunction with the national conference. MA NASPA continues to provide the state with professional development and networking opportunities to bring members together and address pertinent/topical issues of interest. MA NASPA board members meet monthly

There were a total of 8 small networking groups assembled which were comprised of 4-5 professionals per group. The meeting included lunch and small group discussion.

The Mid/Senior Level Steering Committee offered an educational session on career advancement for the MSL professional on March 24th at Babson College. The presenter was Ellen Heffernan from Spelman & Johnson. Dr. Lawrence Ward, Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students at Babson College, also spoke briefly to the group. A number of seasoned MSL professionals in the region also talked about career-related topics (Rae-Anne Butera, Olin College; Rich DeCapua, Boston College; Ali Hicks; and Beth Devonshire, UMass Boston). A total of 35 professionals attended this session. Babson College generously hosted a social after the session and provided a wide assortment of appetizers in their on- campus pub. Notes from the session were posted to the MSL Facebook page.

Rachel Lucking, Assistant Dean for Campus Engagement at Framingham State University and member of the Steering Committee, hosted a Zoom discussion on June 1st. The title of the discussion was: “Lunch Chat on The Crossroads of the Personal and Professional: Balance? Synchronicity? Managing.” A total of 15 professionals signed up for the session and 7 actually participated in the discussion. Registration was offered through the national NASPA office.

Black organized a Zoom online presentation on Assessment and Strategic Planning which was held on June 22, 2017. The featured presenter was Peter Fowler, Associate Dean of Students and Associate Vice President of Student Affairs at Wentworth Institute of Technology. Over 30 individuals signed up for the session and approximately 20 participated. Registration was offered through the national NASPA office.

The MSL steering committee hosted a Lunch and Learn at the Region 1 conference in November 2017. The title was “Mid-Senior Level Hot Topics: Let’s Discuss!” Over 20 MSL professionals registered for the Lunch and Learn and approximately 20 attended the session.

The steering committee facilitated the session and invited seasoned MSL professionals to help with the discussion: Conway Campbell, Assumption College; Carole Hughes, Boston College; John Denio, Bryant University; Jamie Glanton Costello, Massachusetts College of Art; and Peter Fowler, Wentworth Institute of Technology. We asked for discussion topics via a survey ahead of time, and “hot topics” was the most popular topic. The seasoned MSL professionals offered to review resumes and have one-on-one conversations with the participants, though none occurred at the actual session. The session received excellent feedback and the participants made it clear that they want more professional development for professionals at their level.

The MSL steering committee hosted a discussion table at the engagement breakfast at the Region 1 conference in November 2017. MSL professionals were invited to provide input about re-imagining the Mid-Senior Colleague Network. Approximately 10 individuals participated in the breakfast, and the committee received excellent feedback about how to re-develop the MSL Colleague Network to better serve the needs of MSL professionals in the region. The committee will pursue a cohort model comprised of approximately 25 MSL professionals in the region who would meet in person approximately 4 times per year to discuss relevant topics. The format would be similar to the New England Student Affairs Think Tank (NESATT) but different enough that it would be appealing to our cohort. It will be just for NASPA members, and we will likely charge a small fee to cover the costs of meals at each meeting. Lucas Malo from Brandeis University who is on the MSL Steering Committee is helping to spearhead this effort.

On January 26, 2018, Black had a meeting via telephone with Mandi Kuster, Chair of the Mid-Level Institute and Region 1 Board member, to discuss the direction of the MSL Colleague Network and highlight the differences from the MLI Institute. They discussed the importance of differentiating the two professional development opportunities and supporting each other in their efforts.

The MSL Steering Committee decided to pilot the new version of the MSL Colleague Network at an event that is scheduled for March 29, 2018 at Becker College in Leicester, MA. The event will include lunch and participants will engage in hot topics roundtable discussions, discuss the new format of the MSL Colleague Network and will include a speaker on the topic of personal finance.

Member at Large/Institute Coordinator Ted Zito (Assumption College) and Research Coordinator Pat Rissmeyer (Emmanuel College) have partnered on a Regional initiative to assess student affairs professional development experiences, specifically the impact of the NASPA Region I institutes on participant skill development, knowledge acquisition, career advancement and involvement in leadership in professional associations. Division Updates:

 Small Colleges and Universities Representative Maureen Wark (Montserrat College of Art) had concerns about the accuracy of the SCUD contact lists and reports. The Region I membership coordinator, along with the national office made great headway toward resolving the issue, but it took a considerable amount of time. While it would be helpful to have direct access to SCU members, once the reports were more accurate, Wark was able to find email addresses and write to colleagues at small colleges in Region I.

In March, 2017, Wark communicated via email to Region I members the agenda for small colleges and universities division activities at the Annual NASPA Conference in March. Received a few ‘thank you’ messages from members. She will do the same for the 2018 conference.

Wark held a Zoom meeting for small colleges in Region I on June 28th to discuss opportunities in the regions, programming deadlines for both regional and national conferences and to open a conversation about issues facing small colleges. The feedback was minimal, but there was an idea to pursue a ‘think tank’-like opportunity around one or more of the following issues: student engagement, res hall retention, introducing new staff to life at a SCU, impact of FLSA (retention, compression issues, etc.), collaboration between SA and AA, working with competing interests on campus (activities v. athletics), strategic planning in SA and specific departments, staff retention - incentives beyond salary. Wark also shared information about the SCU divisional web page. The group talked for a brief time about a great article about starting one’s career at a small college and then Wark shared the article with all. (“Five things early-career professionals can do as they transition to an SCU"- https://www.naspa.org/constituent-groups/posts/five- things-early-career-professionals-can-do-as-they-transition-to-an-scu).

Wark planned to follow up on these issues and explore new ones during the Region I conference in November but she was unable to attend due to illness. Electronic follow-up has been relatively unsuccessful. Wark submitted a program proposal to the Region I conference for a round table on issues facing colleges under 1000 student, which was rejected. Wark served as a program reviewer for SCU division-sponsored for the 2018 national NASPA Conference. Wark continues to participate in SCUD conference calls and attend RAB meetings.

The Foundation awarded three $500 Rhatigan scholarships to graduate students to attend the Region I Annual Conference in November 2017. The recipients were Kyla Martin of Northeastern University, DeAnna Bryfogle of Northeastern University, and Caroline Fanno of University of Maine.

At the January 18, 2018 meeting, the Region I Advisory Committee approved $2,000 in funding to support student affairs practitioner, faculty and graduate student research. Grants will be supported by the NASPA Foundation for the Region’s fundraising success in reaching both our donor and dollar goals. The Advisory Board is interested in funding research which advances our understanding of student development, student success, student learning and the student affairs profession. The deadline for application is February 19, 2018. An individual or research team may receive up to $2,000 for data analysis/equipment/transcription services, travel/transportation, mailing/postage/supplies, printing/marketing or food. Applications are available on the Region I website.

This grant opportunity is a result of collaboration among the Region I Research Coordinator, Institute Coordinator, Faculty Liaison, Foundation Ambassadors, Maine State Director and Treasurer. A Research Grant Committee, made up of faculty and staff serving on the Advisory Board, will review submitted applications. Proposals will be evaluated on seven criteria: clarity of the proposal; relationship of research to the literature; potential impact of research on the profession; appropriateness of methodology to the research questions; alignment of the budget with the research design; relationship of the research topic to advancing the understanding of student development, success, learning and/or the student affairs profession; creativity and originality. Pat Rissmeyer, Emmanuel College, Research Coordinator expects that the award recipients will be announced at the Region I Business meeting at the national conference.
