In recognizing the harmful nature of each of these representations’ depictions of both masculinity and mental illness, we can understand why such bad tropes circulate, and how to recognize and refuse them, or make them better. -

Date:……………………………... ii Summary In this thesis, I examine the way in which Martin Scorsese’s 1976 film Taxi Driver can be read as a critical investigation of post-World War II American masculinity. Drawing on Susan Faludi’s arguments regarding the post-World War II American ‘masculinity crisis’, I highlight specifically how Taxi Driver addresses American masculinity in the context of ideals of heroism, of the myth of the Wild West, of the Vietnam era, and of the increasingly influential role that the popular media play in shaping conceptions of masculinity. In the process I indicate that Taxi Driver exposes, and critiques, an association in modern American society between masculinity and what analysts have termed the ‘myth of regeneration through violence’. Taxi Driver: Alienation & Crises of Masculinity in the Urban City Many film directors have created cities that were metaphors on a male‟s thoughts, fears, fantasies and masculinity. An audience‟s literal way of seeing what the main character is feeling and thinking, is through the eyes of its city, which becomes a projection of the protagonist‟s reality. Throughout the semester the films we‟ve discussed, explored these metaphors and themes and in several ways the landscapes of the urban cities we‟ve encountered became a secondary character of its own. The one film I will discuss that greatly explores these topics is Martin Scorsese‟s masterpiece Taxi Driver. A Vietnam vet named Travis Bickle decides to take on a full time job as a graveyard shift cab driver to occupy his time, because of his trouble obtaining sleep. Travis is a lonely, disconnected and alienated individual, who tends to seem much smaller and unimportant in scale, when in contrast to the large landscapes of his urban city of New York. Travis tries to interact with others he comes in contact with most importantly women, but instead the women in the story not only reject his advances, but also become a catalyst for his new found identity and his threatened masculinity, which eventually leads to violence. Stetson University Summer Grant Progress Report – Laura Crysel Being the “Catcher in the Rye”: What is the Harm in Challenged Books? To what extent does a controversial book affect the individual who reads it? Research has failed to address the causal effects of reading banned or challenged literature. There have been some changes to the project since my initial proposal. For example, I have spent the summer reviewing previous literature and collecting materials for my project, some of which are slightly different from those I originally planned to use. I tried to select materials that would reduce the burden on participants (fewer items) and would be as close to what I actually wanted to test as possible, rather than simply replicating previous research. I have also changed the project to reflect the current funding available, hoping to seek out more participants through connections with the ALA and local high schools. Moreover, I reduced the amount of money offered for participation in order to ensure the study will be sufficiently powered. Possibly due to the sensitive nature of the project, I have had difficulty getting the study approved by the IRB, but will begin collecting data once I have approval. I have attached materials below for a more comprehensive review of my progress. Literature Review Mark David Chapman associated J.D. Salinger’s “The Catcher in the Rye” with his assassination of John Lennon (CNN, 2013). This, along with the content of the book itself, made the book extremely controversial. The American Library Association (ALA) reports attempts to censor such controversial literature every year (http://www.ala.org/bbooks/frequentlychallengedbooks/top10). -

Michael Hogan The Pennsylvania State University Abstract This essay seeks to account for the persuasive appeal of George C. Wallace’s campaign rally addresses. The firebrand southern governor and perennial presidential candidate drew a large national following in the late 1960s and early 1970s with speeches that defied all the rules and norms of presidential politics. Yet they invoked passionate commitment within an especially disaffected segment of the American electorate. Utilizing survey date, this essay challenges the conventional portrait of Wallace and the Wallacites, demonstrating that Wallace’s appeal was rooted not so much in conservative politics as in feelings of political alienation, persecution, and pessimism. Accounting for the Wallace phenomenon in terms of a classic, Hofferian theory of social protest, the essay concludes by reflecting on the parallels between Wallace and Donald J. In 1964, George Wallace became a national figure when he launched his first campaign for the presidency with little money, no campaign organization, and an impressive array of critics and adversaries in the media, the churches, the labor movement, and the political mainstream.1 Surprising almost everybody, he showed remarkable strength in northern Democratic primaries and focused attention on his favorite target: the Civil Rights Act of 1964. In 1968, Wallace faced the same barriers and more. His decision to run as a third-party candidate added the challenge of a political system rigged to favor the two major-party candidates.2 Despite those obstacles, Wallace tallied 10 million votes—the most popular votes ever for a third party candidate in U.S. -

ILLUSTRATION BY MARK ROBISON 28/Sunstone ROBERT ]EWETT & ]OHN SHELTON LAWRENCE THE FANTASY FACTOR IN CIVIL RELIGION ASSASSINATIONS AND MASS MURDERS IN THE MEDIA AGE THERE IS WIDESPREAD AWARENESS THAT THE INCIDENCE OF VIOLENT CRIME IN American society has increased dramatically during recent decades. No comparable recognition seems to exist, however, regarding the changed circumstances and motivations associated with some of the more sensational acts of contemporary American violence. While most violent crimes continue HEN we speak of American "civil religion," we to be "orthodox" in their instrumentality (performed for have in mind more than the public ceremonies the sake of private vengeance or personal gain) or in w and officially promulgated beliefs which have their impulsiveness (performed in temporary rage or been studied by Robert Bellah, Sidney Mead, loss of inhibition), a puzzling configuration of factors Martin Marty, Conrad Cherry, and others.1 Though surfaces in a number of recent, well-publicized incidents some of the traditional expressions of the civil religion of mass murder and attempted assassination.
