  • " African Blues": the Sound and History of a Transatlantic Discourse
“African Blues”: The Sound and History of a Transatlantic Discourse A thesis submitted to The Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Music in the Division of Composition, Musicology, and Theory of the College-Conservatory of Music by Saul Meyerson-Knox BA, Guilford College, 2007 Committee Chair: Stefan Fiol, PhD Abstract This thesis explores the musical style known as “African Blues” in terms of its historical and social implications. Contemporary West African music sold as “African Blues” has become commercially successful in the West in part because of popular notions of the connection between American blues and African music. Significant scholarship has attempted to cite the “home of the blues” in Africa and prove the retention of African music traits in the blues; however much of this is based on problematic assumptions and preconceived notions of “the blues.” Since the earliest studies, “the blues” has been grounded in discourse of racial difference, authenticity, and origin-seeking, which have characterized the blues narrative and the conceptualization of the music. This study shows how the bi-directional movement of music has been used by scholars, record companies, and performing artist for different reasons without full consideration of its historical implications. i Copyright © 2013 by Saul Meyerson-Knox All rights reserved. ii Acknowledgements I would like to express my utmost gratitude to my advisor, Dr. Stefan Fiol for his support, inspiration, and enthusiasm. Talking Heads From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Background information Origin New York City, New York, United States Genres New wave · post-punk · art pop · funk rock · worldbeat Years active 1975–1991 Labels Sire/Warner Bros., EMI Associated acts Tom Tom Club, The Modern Lovers, Brian Eno Past members David Byrne Chris Frantz Tina Weymouth Jerry Harrison Talking Heads were an American rock band formed in 1975 in New York City and active until 1991. The band comprised David Byrne (lead vocals, guitar), Chris Frantz (drums), Tina Weymouth (bass) and Jerry Harrison (keyboards, guitar). Other musicians also regularly made appearances in concert and on the group's albums. The new wave style of Talking Heads combined elements of punk, art rock, funk, avant-garde, dance, pop, and world music with the neurotic, whimsical stage persona of frontman and songwriter David Byrne. The band made use of various performance and multimedia projects throughout its career. Critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine described Talking Heads as being "one of the most critically acclaimed bands of the '80s, while managing to earn several pop hits." In 2002, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Four of the band's albums appeared on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and three of their songs ("Psycho Killer", "Life During Wartime", and "Once in a Lifetime") were included among The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. Talking Heads were also included at #64 on VH1's list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time", placed among Rolling Stone 's similar list as well.

  • Russia Outward
Russia Outward memoir by John Rust My story is pretty long and strange - growing up in the Ukraine, on the other side of the Iron Curtain which was slowly vanishing then, my opportunities to hear music were rather limited. First records were those two by the early Beatles released by the only legal record label of the USSR - Firma Melodiya: A Hard Day's Night and Taste Of Honey - back in 1988. Perestroyka was coming and soon there appeared the great "Archive Of Popular Music" LPs - the first one was a bad compilation of the Doors, 2nd - early Stevie Wonder stuff, 3rd - Creedence Clearwater Revival, 4th and 5th - The Rolling Stones 1964-65... all of them influenced me a lot. Some strange tapes came - and some music articles started to appear in the local press. My friends and I discovered the mysterious PUNK-movement...there were weird pics of hardcore punks with incredible haircuts and No Future-slogans...enough to impress us all heavily. I formed a band with my school-mates willing to play punk rock (the journalists used to emphasize the fact that all the punk bands were amateurs which suited us perfectly). But there were no punk records around - Melodiya was publishing neither Pistols nor Clash. I remember the excitement of first listening to Closer by Joy Division - the guy who gave the tape to me said it was punk.... We learned this lesson and started playing, using three acoustic guitars and home-made drums and recorded a couple of terrible albums inspired mostly by Joy Division and the awful tape of Never Mind The Bollocks, which was soon found in Moscow.

  • FIFTH WORLD MUSIC: a Perspective on So Called Ethnic Music in Between Pop Culture and Cultural Change
FIFTH WORLD MUSIC: A Perspective on So Called Ethnic Music In Between Pop Culture and Cultural Change Luigi Monteanni Currently M.A. in cultural anthropology and ethnology at Alma mater studiorum of Bologna – Italy [email protected] ABSTRACT The aim of this paper is to explore the history and progresses of what has been called word music. It would be fair to say that most of the people know the term “world music”. Synonyms of other popular definitions, such as ethnic music or world beat, this label has defined since its first appearance both in the academic world and in the music industry, for all kinds of music that could sound exotic or non-western. Altough world music is a problematic concept, since its creation it has developed and has been critically scanned to question whether the label can be used as a valid definition and instrument or has to be seen as one of the most underhanded creations of modern colonialism. In the pages that follow I'll try, with the help of scholars like Victor Segalen, Henry Spiller, Veit Erlman and Alan Lomax (to name some), is to draw a historical line starting from the concept of primitive music as present in the works of musicians of the classic tradition, continuing with the terms of world music, fourth world music, neo geo, and to finish, to examine the latest definitions of fifth world and outernational music and post-geographical sounds. The present paper does not come from an anthropologist, a critic of culture, a musicologist or any similar figure but from an enthusiast of those subjects, so it should be taken as a possible pespective to be analyzed critically, and eventually developed in much more serious terms in the future.
