These cakes were dense, generally shaped as bread loaves, and baked directly on the floor of an oven. Italian Jews disseminated these rudimentary honey cakes throughout medieval Europe. The current form of honey cake evolved over centuries, assuming its closest relation to our present concept in the late nineteenth century. Its evolution is part of the agricultural history and eating habits of Europe in which wheat emerged as the dominant grain. By the end of the seventeenth century bakers began to update the doorstopper density of honey cakes by adding eggs and oil and substituting wheat flour for bread crumbs. The result was lighter, more tender loaves. The introduction of alkaline chemical leavenings in the eighteenth century led to even lighter lekach or honey cakes.

Allergy Lists Dear Customer, In developing our products, we always avoid the use of allergenic ingredients wherever possible. Wherever we can, we provide choice within our ranges for customers who wish to avoid particular ingredients (e.g. specific gluten free products). To help with this, we provide comprehensive and clear on-pack information indicating the presence of the common allergens. This information appears in both the ingredients list (e.g. Soya lecithin, lactose (from cows’ milk)), and the Contains box : Any product containing peanuts or other kinds of nut (or nut oil), carries the nut warning logo next to the ingredients list. Where products themselves are potential allergens and the presence of the allergen is clear from the product description, for example; milk, mustard sauce, peanut butter, pre-packed celery, we do not include a contains box as our customers have told us that this information is not valuable to them. Comprehensive and regularly updated lists of products that are prepared to recipes that exclude allergens are available from our stores, on-line and via our Customer Service team (0845 302 1234). • Rav Shaul Feldman on Shavuot Like Most of Our Biblical Holidays, Shavuot Has Several Names
Rav Shaul Feldman on Shavuot Like most of our biblical holidays, Shavuot has several names. One of its names is mentioned in Davening “Zman Matan Torateinu,” suggesting that on the sixth of Sivan 2448 years after the creation of the world the Torah was given to Am Israel at Har Sinai (Gemara Masechet Shabat 88). The centrality of Torah in the life of a Jew is represented every morning when we recite Birkot Hatorah. Two Brachot are recited: 1) Asher Bachar Banu- we were chosen by G-D to receive his Torah 2) Laosek Bidvirei Torah- we were commanded to dwell and learn the Torah Rav Solovechik explains the difference between the two Brachot. In the Bracha about us being chosen, regardless of how much we learn -- we are chosen. Every Jew has that special “Neshama” that was given to him regardless of his actions. That’s what we celebrate every morning with the Bracha of us being chosen. It’s about the potential bestowed upon us. The second Bracha about the actual learning requires our work. That is why one must learn after we recite this Bracha and we therefore recite Shema which fulfills at least the minimum to cover this requirement. Rav Kook explains this in several places in a similar way, but broadens it to a national level. As a nation, says Rav Kook, we are the Chosen nation “Am Segula.” It is part and parcel of who we are, we are born into that naturally and we inherit it.

  • The International Jewish Cook Book
THE INTERNATIONAL JEWISH COOK BOOK By FLORENCE KREISLER GREENBAUM Instructor in Cooking and Domestic Science 1600 RECIPES ACCORDING TO THE JEWISH DIETARY LAWS WITH the RULES for KASHERING * * * * * THE FAVORITE RECIPES OF AMERICA, AUSTRIA, GERMANY, RUSSIA, FRANCE, POLAND, ROUMANIA, Etc., Etc. SECOND EDITION 1919 *PUBLISHERS' NOTE* It is with pleasure, and pardonable pride, that the Publishers announce the appearance of The International Jewish Cook Book, which, "though we do say it ourselves," is the best and most complete kosher cook book ever issued in this country. It is the direct successor to the "Aunt Babette Cook Book," which has enjoyed undisputed popularity for more than a generation and which is no longer published. The International Jewish Cook Book is, however, far superior to the older book. It is much larger and the recipes are prepared strictly in accordance with the Jewish dietary laws. The author and compiler, Mrs. Florence K. Greenbaum, is a household efficiency woman, an expert Jewish cook, and thoroughly understands the scientific combining of foods. She is a graduate of Hunter College of New York City, where she made a special study of diet and the chemistry of foods. She was Instructor in Cooking and Domestic Science in the Young Women's Hebrew Association of New York, and is now Instructor and Lecturer for the Association of Jewish Home Makers and the Central Jewish Institute, both under the auspices of the Bureau of Jewish Education (Kehillah). Mrs. Greenbaum knows the housewife's problems through years of personal experience, and knows also how to economize. Many of these recipes have been used in her household for three generations and are still used daily in her home.
