  • Little Joe Blue
Little Joe Blue by Opal Louis Nations The clincher that puts Little Joe Blue a notch above most B.B. King imitators is the fact that he took the former’s mannerisms and affectations and added a few twists of his own. This made him an extremely emotive original, aside from the fact that he possessed the skills to write uniquely infectious lyrics like the anguished “Dirty work going on” (Movin 1966), the urgent “Standing on the threshold” (Jewel 1968) and the poetic “Give me an hour in your garden” (Miles Ahead 1974). He was born Joseph Valery Jnr. in Vicksburg, Miss. on September 23, 1934 to Abraham Fields and Willie Hodges. He was raised across the Mississippi River in Tallulah, La. through the 1940s then moved to Detroit. As a youngster in Tallulah, Joseph came to be called “Little Joe Blue” because he constantly played Eugene Field’s traditional “Little boy blue” on his harmonica. His first encounters with the blues were in Vicksburg at the Green Lantern dance hall where he snuck around the back and peeked in the door. Jimmy Liggins and T-Bone Walker, among others, played there. From 1951-53 he served in the U.S. Army and was posted out to the Korean front. With a natural propensity to use his hands, he worked on auto assembly lines before he started (at the urging of his hero B.B. King) entering talent shows and sit-in gigs with local bands as a stand-up singer. One of these gigs involved the great “Bobo” Jenkins from Forkland, Alabama.

Well... in the case of Arthur K Adams it is, although in the case of Al King, getting to an influential label just a little too late is perhaps a more accurate description. Vocalist and Louisianan, Al Smith, born in 1926, located to the West Coast after WWII, first to Los Angeles and then to Oakland, where from 1951 through to the early sixties he had a number of single releases on small label enterprises. It wasn't until the mid sixties however before he had anything like a hit, and after he'd changed his nom de disque to Al King, this was with 'Think Twice Before You Speak', first issued on his own Flag imprint and then leased to the New York Sahara label (initially Sahara's owner, a record distributor, wanted copies of the Flag release, but when Al couldn't afford to have them pressed, he leased the tracks).

MUSICAL COMMUNITY The Blues Scene in North Richmond, California Jeffrey Callen TABLE OF CONTENTS LIST OF ILLUSTRATIONS iii PREFACE iv CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION 1 CHAPTER TWO: HISTORICAL BACKGROUND 16 CHAPTER THREE: THE BLUES COMES TO NORTH RICHMOND CHAPTER FOUR: CHANGING NATIONAL STYLES CHAPTER FIVE: NORTH RICHMOND AND THE “OAKLAND SOUND” CHAPTER SIX: THE MUSICAL COMMUNITY CHAPTER SEVEN: DECLINE OF THE BLUES SCENE CHAPTER EIGHT: CONCLUSION BIBLIOGRAPHY ANNOTATED DISCOGRAPHY i i LIST OF ILLUSTRATIONS Maps of the San Francisco Bay Area & North Richmond Photograph of Little Red and the Dukes of Rhythms Mid-1950s Set List of Little Red and the Dukes of Rhythms 1998 Photograph of the Former Site of Ollie Freeman's Jazzland Records ii i PREFACE The research upon which this book is based is the result of a fortuitous series of seemingly unconnected events. When I moved to the San Francisco Bay Area as a young adult, I was already an avid blues fan and had begun collecting the recordings of such notable artists as B.B. King and Muddy Waters. I settled in Oakland and began to investigate the local music scene. I was soon introduced to the rich blues heritage of the East Bay by friends, teachers and the radio shows of local record producer Chris Strachwitz and music critic Phil Elwood. I also had the occasion to meet three of the older stalwarts of the East Bay blues scene: L.C. “Good Rockin’” Robinson, Teddy Winston and Smiley Winters. When I went to graduate school to study ethnomusicology, I wanted to explore a thesis topic that captured my interest and allowed me the opportunity to gain experience in ethnographic research.

  • Golden Gate Grooves
THE GOLDEN GATE BLUES SOCIETY QUARTERLY Issue 14, August 2012 GOLDEN GATE GROOVES INTERNATIONAL BLUES CHALLENGE—WHAT I LEARNED by Paula Harris 3rd Place Winner at the 2012 IBC in Memphis If entry into the by some members of The Blues Foundation board was: IBC is something “Because the definition of blues can be so broad, make you’re consider- sure you stick to songs that leave no doubt they are ing, let me share BLUES songs.” As someone who embraces the more some things. Let soulful side of the blues, with influences such as Little me qualify right Milton and Etta James, this was a hard pill to swallow off the bat: I am, because almost all my original songs have a funky feel to by no means, the them. But we decided to opt for straight blues and final “that’s-the- perhaps sacrifice some of the points for ORIGINALITY way-it-is” voice on because that is only weighted 2 points! BLUES CONTENT this matter. You’d is weighted 4 points! See where I am going with this? have to speak to That brings me to the SCORING CATEGORIES: BLUES one of the bands CONTENT , as I said, is weighted 4 points and is the most that actually WON important category. But even if you pick a straight blues to get that. But song, then add a funky slap bass line…the crowd may we did come darn love you, but you will be docked points by the judges. So close and these keep it straight blues; stick to 8, 12, and 16 bar formats, are the things I or songs that have a well-known blues feel.
