The Sound Of Music

ACT ONE: AT THE ABBEY

(NARRATION)

SCENE OPENS WITH MARIA ALONE IN THE HILLS, SINGING AND HAPPY TO BE ALIVE.

MUSIC: The Sound of Music

The hills are alive With the sound of music With songs they have sung For a thousand years

The hills fill my heart With the sound of music My heart wants to sing every song it hears My heart wants to beat like the wings of the birds that rise From the lake to the trees My heart wants to sigh like a chime that flies From a church on a breeze

To laugh like a brook when it trips and falls Over stones on its way To sing through the night Like a lark who is learning to pray I go to the hills When my heart is lonely I know I will hear What I've heard before My heart will be blessed With the sound of music And I'll sing...... once more

AS THE SONG ENDS, MARIA HEARS A DISTANT VOICE CALLING HER.

MARIA Oh, my! I’ve lost track of the time. I’m late for prayers!

MARIA HURRIEDLY EXITS.

MOTHER ABBESS ENTERS AND KNEELS.

MARIA ENTERS OUT OF BREATH. SHE SEES MOTHER ABBESS AND HURRIES OVER TO HER.

MARIA Mother Abbess, I'm sorry. I couldn't help myself. The hills were singing to me. (Bowing her head) Please forgive me.

MOTHER ABBESS (Smiling) You don’t need to apologize, Maria.

MARIA (Still trying to explain) You see, the sky was so blue today. . .

MOTHER ABBESS Tell me something Maria - What is the most important lesson you have learned in your young life?

MARIA (Thoughtfully) Well.. To be kind… and honest… To do good things for others…

MOTHER ABBESS Yes. And now I think it’s time you practiced those things – with a family that needs it.

MARIA Do you mean leave the Abbey?

MOTHER ABBESS Only for a while.

MARIA (Bowing her head) If you think I should…

MOTHER ABBESS There is a family nearby that needs a governess until September.

MARIA Until September?

MOTHER ABBESS For seven children.

MARIA Seven children?!?

MOTHER ABBESS Do you like children?

MARIA Well, yes - but seven!

MOTHER ABBESS I‘ll tell Captain von Trapp to expect you tomorrow.

MARIA Just until September?

MOTHER ABBESS (Smiling) Yes, Maria - Just until September.

MOTHER ABBESS PUTS HER ARM AROUND MARIA AND THEY EXIT.

“SOUND OF MUSIC” FADES IN.

MUSIC: THE LONELY GOATHERD

High on a hill was a lonely goatherd, “Yodelayheehoo!” Loud was the voice Of the lonely goatherd, “Yodelayheehoo!” Folks in a town That was quite remote heard, “Yodelayheehoo!” Lusty and clear From the goatherd's throat heard , “Yodelayheehoo!”

A prince on the bridge Of a castle moat heard, “Yodelayheehoo!” Men on a road With a load to tote heard, “Yodelayheehoo!” Men in the midst Of a table d'hôte heard, “Yodelayheehoo!” Men drinking beer With the foam afloat heard, “Yodelayheehoo!”

One little girl ln a pale pink coat heard, “Yodelayheehoo!” She yodeled back To the lonely goatherd, “Yodelayheehoo!” Soon her mama With a gleaming gloat heard, “Yodelayheehoo!”

What a duet for a girl and goatherd, “Yodelayheehoo!” One little girl ln a pale pink coat heard, “Yodelayheehoo!”

She yodeled back To the lonely goatherd, “Yodelayheehoo!”

Soon her mama With a gleaming gloat heard, “Yodelayheehoo!” What a duet for a girl and goatherd, “Yodelayheehoo!” Happy are they, “Yodelayheehoo!” Soon the duet will become a trio, “Yodelayheehoo!”

“Yodelayheehoo!” “Yodelayheehoo!” “Yodelayheehoo!” “Yodelayheehoo!”

“Yodelayheehoo!”

AUDIENCE CLAPS.

MUSIC: SO LONG, FAREWELL

There's a sad sort of clanging from the clock in the hall And the bells in the steeple too And up in the nursery an absurd little bird Is popping up to say "coo-coo" Coo-coo Coo-coo Regretfully they tell us But firmly they compel us To say goodbye To you…

So long, farewell Auf Wiedersehen, good night I hate to go and leave this pretty sight

So long, farewell, Auf Wiedersehen, adieu Adieu, adieu to you and you and you

So long, farewell Au revoir, auf Wiedersehen I'd like to stay and taste my first champagne

-Yes? -No.

So long, farewell Auf Wiedersehen, goodbye I leave and heave a sigh and say goodbye

Goodbye I'm glad to go I cannot tell a lie

I flit, I float I fleetly flee, I fly

The sun has gone to bed And so must I

So long Farewell Auf Wiedersehen, goodbye

Goodbye Goodbye

Goodbye

AUDIENCE: Goodbye!

ENTIRE CAST EXITS EXCEPT FOR DUKE OF ALPINE.

FINALE

DUKE OF ALPINE NARRATION:

The story of Maria and the Von Trapp family does not end here… As a matter of fact, it begins here! It’s true!

Maria never did return to the Abbey - Life has a way of taking twists and turns and the best thing you can do is be ready, because it’s not what happens to you, but what you do when it does happen.

Maria and the Captain indeed fell in love and were married - The children happy! Captain Von Trapp left his work as a German Consulate and took the family around the world, delighting audiences with their singing abilities and their story of how music can bring a family together in ways that very little else can.

I, the Duke of Alpine, remain among their very closest friends. Whenever I feel life has gotten, shall we say, unpleasant, I think of one of my favorite things – the Von Trapp Family Singers - and the Sound of Music they make so well together (He sings) And then I don’t feel so bad!

THE ENTIRE CAST ENTERS AND SINGS “THE SOUND OF MUSIC”

END - STAGE BOWS
