FAITH FORMATION

Question of the Week for Feb. 28 – Mar. 6 Gospel: Mark 9:2-10 Key Passage: “Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them; from the cloud came a voice, ‘This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.’” (Mark 9:7) Question for Adults: In what ways does Jesus speak today, ways in which you can truly "listen to him?" Question for Youth: The disciples had a very intense experience of Jesus on the mountain. Have you ever had a "mountain top" experience? What was it like for you? Question for Children: Name or draw a picture of a time you knew that Jesus was with you. *********************************************************************** Preferential Option for the Poor “Incline your ear, O Lord; answer me, for I am afflicted and poor. Keep my life, for I am devoted to you; save your servant who trusts in you. You are my God.” (Psalm 86:1-2) “Catholic Social Teaching’s preferential treatment of the poor means that I as a human being, my church as an institution, and my government in its priority and policy setting, should initially consider “how will this affect poor people?” Blessed are the poor is what we are told in Luke 6.” (From a reflection by Al Mytty who writes for Daily Scripture Reflections from St. Mon- ica’s Parish in Indianapolis, Indiana) *********************************************************************** Faith Reflections This Wednesday, March 3, we have the option of celebrating the Memorial of St. Katharine Drexel who was canonized in 2000. Katharine was born in on November 26, 1858. Her father was , an internationally known banker and one of the richest men in America. Along with her siblings, she was given a first-class education in lan- guages, literature, philosophy, music and painting. The Drexel family lived in a magnificent mansion in Philadelphia, and spent their summers at a wonderful summer estate. Her father and stepmother had a chapel in their home, and father went there to pray every day after work. Three afternoons a week, her parents opened their home to the poor. The Drexels taught their children that their wealth had been entrusted to them, and was destined to be used for the common good. Katharine’s early life would influence the rest of her life. Katharine inherited millions after the death of her parents, but she chose the life of a religious sister living out the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. She founded a new religious order, the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, dedicated to helping Native and Minority Americans. She spent her millions on Catholic schools and missions, her crowning achievement being Xavier University in for African Americans. In Nebraska, she and her order founded the St. Augustine Indian Mission and School in Winnebago. It is said that Katharine visited every Native American family before the school opened in 1909. St. Katharine Drexel, pray for us!
