Randall, B.P.Bishop Museum, Hawaii, USA iagnostic characters: Small to medium-sized fishes (to 40 cm) with a moderately elongate, slightly com- Dpressed body; ventral side of head and body nearly flat. Eye near dorsal profile of head. Mouth relatively small, ventral on head, and protrusible, the upper jaw slightly protruding; teeth conical, small to very small. Chin with a pair of long sensory barbels that can be folded into a median groove on throat. Two well separated dorsal fins, the first with 7 or 8 spines, the second with 1 spine and 8 soft rays. Anal fin with 1 spine and 7 soft rays.Caudal fin forked.Paired fins of moderate size, the pectorals with 13 to 17 rays;pelvic fins with 1 spine and 5 soft rays, their origin below the pectorals. Scales large and slightly ctenoid (rough to touch); a single continuous lateral line. Colour: variable; whitish to red, with spots or stripes. 1st dorsal fin with 7or8spines 2nd dorsal fin with 1 spine and 8 soft rays pair of long sensory barbels Habitat, biology, and fisheries: Goatfishes are bottom-dwelling fishes usually found on sand or mud sub- strata, but 2 of the 4 western Atlantic species occur on coral reefs where sand is prevalent. The barbels are supplied with chemosensory organs and are used to detect prey by skimming over the substratum or by thrust- ing them into the sediment. Food consists of a wide variety of invertebrates, mostly those that live beneath the surface of the sand or mud. -

A new species, Trachinotus macrospilus, is described from the Marquesas Islands where it is endemic and the only species of the genus present. It differs from the other spotted Indo-West Pacific species most noticeably in having adults with only one or two large spots on each side, the largest spot larger than the iris diameter, and in having no large spot positioned above the pectoral fin. An identification key is given for all Indo-West Pacific species of Trachinotus and a molecular phylogeny, including 16 of the 20 valid species of Trachinotus is presented. Characters from fossils have been viewed as less informative or more subjective Keywords: than comparable information from extant taxa. However, fossils are often the continuous trait evolution, character state only known representatives of many higher taxa, including some of the earliest optimization, morphological diversification, forms, and have been important in determining character polarity and filling vertebrate taphonomy morphological gaps. Here we evaluate the influence of fossils on the interpretation of character evolution by comparing estimates of ancestral body Accepted for publication: 22 July 2008 size in fishes (non-tetrapod craniates) from two large and previously unpublished datasets; a palaeontological dataset representing all principal clades from throughout the Phanerozoic, and a macroecological dataset for all 515 families of living (Recent) fishes. Ancestral size was estimated from phylogenetically based (i.e. parsimony) optimization methods. Ancestral size estimates obtained from analysis of extant fish families are five to eight times larger than estimates using fossil members of the same higher taxa. -

ABSTRACT Presumably the Bathyclupeids branched off from the early Berydformes to the Perci- formes in the Cretaceous. Fossil remains indicate the Bathyclupeids were well established by this period. From their probable origin in the Indian Ocean the path of migration led through the EastJndies, across the Pacific and the still open waters of the Isthmus of Panama to the Caribbean and Oulf of Mexico. There has been much debate as to where the Bathyclupeids belong in the family tree of fishes. Alcock (1891), who first described the genus, believed it belonged in the order Isospondyli, family Clupeidae. Goode and Bean (1896), referred the genus to the order Teleocephali (Berycoidei in part) and raised the group to family status, Bathyclupeida6. Norman(1938-44),inhis draft analysis considered the Bathyclupeids in the order Perciformes, and Berg (1958), erected the order Bathyclupei formes. Patterson (1964), placed it with the Perciformes, as have Greraiwood, Rosen, Weitzman and Myers (1966). It is now generally accepted that the Bathyclupeids belong in the order Perciformes, sub-order Percoidei, familyBafliyclupeidae. Thefamily is limited to one genus with six described species, Bathyclupea hoskynii Alcock 1891, Andaman Sea; B. argentea Ooode and Bean 1896, Caribbean Sea; B. malayana Weber 1913, FloresSea; B. megaceps Fowler 1938, Philippines; B. gracilis Fowler 1938, Philippines; and B. schroederi Dick 1962, Caribbean Sea. INTRODUCTION AFTER many years of indecision concerning the status ot Bathyclupea, it is now gene rally accepted that Bathyclupeids are Acanthopterygians belonging in the order Perciformes, sub-order Percoidei. -

I use the concept ‘Fishes’ in the usual sense, i.e., starting with the Agnatha up to the †Osteolepidiformes. All the family-group names proposed for fossil fishes found to date are listed, together with their author(s) and year of publication. The main goal of the list is to contribute to the usage of the correct family-group names for fossil fishes with a uniform spelling and to list the author(s) and date of those names. No valid family-group name description could be located for the following family-group names currently in usage: †Brindabellaspidae, †Diabolepididae, †Dorsetichthyidae, †Erichalcidae, †Holodipteridae, †Kentuckiidae, †Lepidaspididae, †Loganelliidae and †Pituriaspididae.
