When mass media, like the movies, doctor historical fact, how different is that from Big Brother altering all records to refl ect the Big Lie? Oliver Stone isn’t Big Brother and Hollywood is not the world of Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-four. However, revision- ist history is ungood, as Orwell would have written. If Colin Farrell had portrayed his Alexander as a lover of men, how would that have diminished his portrayal of Alexander? Which leads us into the fourth concern. Farrell has been quoted as saying he found kissing another man, stubble and all, on the lips as “repulsive” – this from the pre-eminent male slut of Hollywood…not that that’s a bad thing, being a male slut… But one wonders why leading men always feel it so necessary to distance themselves when their character is called upon to behave, however remotely, as “gay” – espe- cially men with the clearly heterosexual credentials of a Colin Farrell, a self-described womanizer, party animal, and carouser. There is a pattern emerging there that I have some dif- fi culty with. A pattern that suggests portraying someone as homosexual is to slander the individual. How does it slander them? It only slanders them if one thinks being homosexual is something one should be ashamed of. I’m not in the least ashamed of being homosexual. In fact, I glory in it. I bet Alexander and Hephaestion likely did as well. Stephen Lock is the Regional Director for Egale Canada and the Calgary Representative for The Canadians For Equal Marriage Coalition. 30 gaycalgary.com magazine Grease is the word at Stage West

By Jason Clevett Review | Theatre A lot of things run through the mind of any- one who stages the popular musical “Grease.” In tackling a show that has been staged so many times around the world, that is one of the most popular musical fi lms of all time, the pressure is truly on to put on something out- standing. The cast and crew of Stage West’s production not only tackled it, they thrived on it! “I defi nitely feel that pressure because Stockard Chan- ning is brilliant, and I am a huge fan,” said Michelle Doyle, who plays Rizzo, the role Channing played in the fi lm and on Broadway. “(She) is a brilliant character to play, so as an actor it’s a treat to play that role and accustomed to it, and as an actor [it’s] your job going into sing her songs. Doyle’s former Sheridan College classmate Michael Lo- menda, who plays Kenickie, agrees. Doyle feels that it is easy to prepare for Grease com- pared to other shows. “When they made the movie they made it right. There is a lot of the movie that is very good, so when people see “The last show I did was a new Canadian musical and a production of Grease it had better be just as good. Dumbrowski is taken in by The Pink Ladies while Zuko hangs out with the leather clad cool kids. Madden and Guistini are excellent in their roles, as well as being very strong vocally. Like many productions, the supporting cast can steal scenes, and in this production it’s Doyle and Lomenda who stand out. They add a great deal of depth to characters who, at fi rst glance, are very shallow. Both of them have an abundance of charisma and presence that shines from the stage. Each of the rest of the attractive 22 member cast adds their own dynamic and captures their individual char- acters. The choreography for the show, especially “The Hand Jive” and “Greased Lightning” is astounding! Not to mention the tight live band – they deserve credit for their contribution to the overall show, and their back up of the cast. The great thing about Stage West is that the long runs allow for patrons to have a greater selection of dates to attend, but it benefi ts the actors as well. Productions for many companies run only a week, so to stay in one loca- tion for three months is an added benefi t. “Stage West offers great contracts, especially because they frequently swap shows with their sister theatre in Mississauga, and they give precedence to people who have done the show. If you are lucky you can get 6 – 8 months of work. It’s nice because it’s rare.” Commented Lomenda. Indeed he, Doyle, and many of the cast currently live in Toronto. “…I am from Alberta, [so] this is the second Christmas I have been able to come home for the holidays – it’s great to be home!
