A few years ago, when legendary Nashville producer sold his recording studio, there was some cleaning up to do. That is when Jimmy learned that they had found a sizeable collection of 1⁄4-inch tapes that were the In This Issue original demos of songs Jimmy had written and recorded for Buzz when he was writing for his publishing company in the late 60’s. It turned out that there were Pg 1: Buried Treasure over 125 songs in that pile of tape boxes. In addition to the song demos were Pg 2: Alzheimer’s Walk also the first recordings Travis Turk had engineered in Mobile, and that is Pg 3: Show where the whole story of Buried Treasure begins. Pg 4: Hurricane Benefit As Jimmy describes it: “There is a reason we are calling this collection of songs Pg 5: Tilleritaville and stories Buried Treasure – because they were literally buried in a closet in a Pg 6: U recording studio in Nashville for decades. They were discovered by an old friend, Pg 7: Sail On Travis Turk, who actually recorded these tracks in Mobile, Alabama, in 1969, and Pg 8: Sail On Tom Petty more in Nashville in the years following, when we both wound up moving there. Pg 9: Upcoming Events Travis eventually produced the first two I recorded in Nashville, as well. Pg 10: August Phlocking When we first found the tapes of Buried Treasure, I didn’t know that it would Pg 11: Phins To The West turn out to be such a unique situation where I’d actually get to honor and Pg 12: The Purple Pig introduce the people who started me out.” Pg 13: July Phlocking Buried Treasure will be available in standard and deluxe packaging. Pg 14: Reefer Releases Both releases contain 11 acoustic tracks and song-by-song narration by Pg 15: Escape to Broadway Jimmy Buffett. OCPHC Walks To End Alzheimer’s Club Raises $1,625.00

Saturday, October 14th 2017: The Orange County Parrot Head Club took a philanthropic walk around the campus at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, October 14th to raise money and awareness for The Alzheimer’s Association. Members of our club carried our banner and flowers depicting their connection to the dreaded disease. This is a meaningful event for Parrot Heads as Jimmy Buffett lost his father to Alzheimer’s disease and our Club lost long time club member, Nellie Carlen to the disease as well. “Our club walks in this event every year not only to recognize Jimmy’s father and Nellie, but in memory of all of the people we know in our lives that have been effected by Alzheimer’s Disease.” said Board Member Suzan Langloise. In all, our club raised $1,625.00 for Alzheimer’s research. Following the walk our club had a Phlocking at Lopez & Lefty’s in Anaheim. Jerry Gontang played to the members in attendance. Money collected at the Phlocking went to Alzheimer’s Research.

OCTOBER 21, 2017 - Story by Debi Stephens

THIS WAS MY 45TH JIMMY BUFFETT CONCERT, BEGINNING IN 1977 WHEN CHANGES IN LATITUDES WAS RELEASED. SEEING THE CONCERT AT LEAST ONCE EACH TOUR, AND MANY OF THEM TWICE, THIS WAS A SPECIAL TOUR FOR ME AS WELL. WOULDN'T MISS IT!

WITH THE CONCERT TOUR COMING OUR WAY, IT WAS GOING TO BE STRANGE NOT HAVING OUR CLUB HOSTING THE PARKING LOT PARKING AT IRVINE MEADOWS. ALL THE FUN MEMORIES FROM THAT PARKING LOT WILL LIVE ON. THE TRADITION OF 20 PLUS YEARS HAD COME TO AN END WITH THE VENUE CLOSING N 2016.

ON TO A NEW CHAPTER! LUCKILY, JIMMY WAS COMING TO SAN DIEGO AGAIN AND THE SAN DIEGO CLUB WAS HOSTING THE PARKING LOT PARTY FOR US. IT'S A LITTLE CONFUSING GETTING INTO THE CHULA VISTA AMPITHEATER PARKING LOT AS ANY OF YOU HAVE KNOW BUT WHERE THERE IS A WILL, WE WILL FIND OUR WAY. WE MEET UP WITH THE ORANGE COUNTY GROUP, OR MOST OF US PLUS SOME GREAT OLD MEMBERS FOR SOME PARKING LOT FUN. WE MADE OUR WAY TO THE SAN DIEGO CLUBS MOTORHOME WHERE JERRY GONTANG WAS PLAYING HIS HEART OUR TO A LARGE GROUP OF PARROTHEADS FROM ALL OVER SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. COCKTAILS, JELLO SHOTS AND PHRIENDS, A PERFECT AFTERNOON!

WE MADE OUR WAY TO SOME GREAT SEATS, RIGHT BEHIND ORCHESTRA. WOW, SAN DIEGO HOOKED US UP! THE CROWD WAS GETTING EXCITED AND THEN THE CONCH SHELLS BLEW! HERE HE COMES!! JB AND THE CORAL REEFERS, JUST WHAT WE'D BEEN WAITING FOR!

THE SET LIST WAS FILLED WITH OLD FAVORITES: "CHANGES IN LATITUDES, TIKI BAR, PENCIL THIN, GROWING OLDER, LAST MANGO AND PIRATE LOOKS AT FORTY". OF COURSE, THE STAPLES WERE REPRESENTED: "CHEESEBURGER, FINS, MARGARITIAVILLE, FIVE O'CLOCK SOMEWHERE AND WHY DON'T WE GET DRUNK". THE CROWD WAS TOTALLY INTO IT ALL! SINGING, DANCING, FINS TO THE LEFT, FINS TO THE RIGHT, HOOTING AND HOLLORING! FOR EACH SONG, WONDERFUL BACKGROUNDS SCENES AND PARKING LOT FUN COMPLETED THE EXPERIENCE.

THERE WERE SOME GREAT HIGHLIGHTS IN THE SHOW AS WELL. MAC MACANNALY PLAYED "LITTLE MARTHA" FOR US. HAVE YOU EVER HEARD HIM PLAY THIS, HE IS AMAZING! THAT MAN IS SO TALENTED AND ENTERTAINING. HIS STORIES ARE SO CONNECTIVE, YOU FEEL LIKE YOU KNOW HIM. 9 TIME CMA MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR! WE'RE SO LUCKY! THE BAND PAID TRIBUTE TO TOM PETTY PLAYING"LEARNING TO FLY" WHICH LEFT THE CROWD MOVED AND HAPPY. JIMMY AND THE CORAL REFFERS PLAYED A WONDERFUL 40TH ANNIVERSARY MEDLEY COMBINING 'CHANGES IN LATITUDES, LANDFALL, MISS YOU SO BADLY, SGT. PEPPER/CLICIA, AND TRAUMA'. THEY LOOKED LIKE THEY WERE HAVING SO MUCH FUN, IT WAS SO INFECTIOUS! THEY FINISHED UP THE NIGHT WITH "" AND THEN JIMMY SOLOED WITH "TIN CUP CHALICE", A BEAUTIFUL WAY TO WRAP UP 2+ HOURS OF PARROTHEAD PHUN.

SAN DIEGO AND CHULA VISTA, WE'LL BE BACK AGAIN!

Jimmy Buffett, Kenny Chesney, and Toby Keith together with the will unite to perform at a Florida Hurricane Benefit Concert. The benefit concert will take place one night only on Sunday November 19, at 7 p.m. at Donald L. Tucker Civic Center in Tallahassee, Florida. Proceeds of this benefit concert will help communities in Florida, Puerto Rico, and the islands affected by hurricanes in 2017. “Florida State University was fortunate to be spared from the worst of Hurricane Irma, but we know that was not the case for many of our fellow Floridians,” Florida State University President John Thrasher said. “We’re happy to be able to help our neighbors by hosting this benefit concert and hopefully offer some relief to those hardest hit by the storm.” “The Donald L. Tucker Civic Center at Florida State University and Spectra by Comcast spectacor are honored to be a part of this event that supports hurricane relief efforts,” says Spectra’s Trent Merritt, Regional Vice President. “We are proud to play a part in uniting our community for an unforgettable evening that will provide relief and assistance to those affected by Hurricanes Irma and Maria.” Tickets sold out as fast as they went on sale. Margaritaville University Jimmy’s Millennials Promote the Parrot Head Lifestyle on College Campus’ Around The Country

Hello Parrot Heads! My name is Michael Farrar and I am part of the Margaritaville University Ambassador program. I am currently attending the University of Redlands double majoring in Accounting and Economics. I am 20 years old and have been a Parrot Head for a few years now. It all started when I met my girlfriend’s father and he told me I HAD to like Jimmy Buffett. At first I played along so he would like me, but then I started to really get into the music, and then the lifestyle, and then the mindset. Now my girlfriend complains I am too similar to her father! In reality, though, she is also a fan of the lifestyle. I try and keep life simple; I relax and try not to stress over homework, tests, etc., but still meet deadlines. Around campus I am usually found completing some assignment in my hammock (hung up between two palm trees). I enjoy spending time with my family and friends and make sure to listen to some Buffett whenever I get the chance. One thing I like to keep in mind throughout my days is: “Breathe in, Breathe out, Move on.” Fins up, Parrot Heads!

Sail On Tom Petty

Front Man of The Heartbreakers Rock & Roll Legend Dies of Cardiac Arrest in His Malibu Home at 66

Reprinted from www.express.co.uk - Saturday, October 7th 2017 : As the front man of rock band Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers, Petty had a string of chart hits Including American Girl, Free Fallin’, I Won’t Back Down and Refugee and he quickly established himself as one of the most distinctive voices in rock. He recorded and toured tirelessly for more than four decades, selling more than 80 million records in the process, and entered the Hall Of Fame in 2002. Apart from the Heartbreakers, Petty performed with the , an A-lister-only super group the star formed with Bob Dylan, , and George Harrison. But his latest tour, which he had predicted could well be his last, was with the Heartbreakers and finished just last month. As he told magazine, “I don’t want to spend my life on the road.” Born in Gainesville, Florida, in 1950, Petty was subjected to a tough childhood, punctuated by frequent beatings at the hands of his alcoholic insurance salesman father. He also performed poorly academically. But after meeting while visiting a film set he became obsessed with the guitar and, after leaving school at 17, devoted himself to a band called , two members of which went on to be with him during the glory years. Sail On Tom Petty, continued… The Heartbreakers’ debut in 1976 had little impact in the US until a tour of England put it into the British charts and the first single Breakdown started to get radio play in his home country. The band’s third album Damn The Torpedoes was a blockbuster, selling three million copies and reaching No 2 in the US Billboard chart. Many of Petty’s lyrics spoke for underdogs and, despite his success, he never forgot what it was like to be a working man. When his record company MCA proposed to make the Heartbreakers’ fourth album a flagship of what it called “superstar pricing”, selling it for $9.98 rather than $8.98, Petty threatened to retitle it The 8.98 Album. MCA knew when they were beaten and kept the price as it was. “MCA has done a great job selling our records but they couldn’t see the reality of what it’s like on the street,” Petty commented in 1981, the year the album was released. His first solo album, , recorded with members of both the Heartbreakers and the Traveling Wilburys, was released in 1989. It proved to be his most popular release, selling five million copies in the US and giving him a Top 10 hit with Free Fallin’. He married his first wife Jane Benyo in 1974 and they had two daughters AnnaKim and Adria. After they divorced in 1996, he fell into heroin addiction but had gone through rehab by the time he married second wife Dana Young in 2001 in a ceremony presided over by rock ’n’ roll legend Little Richard. When the news of Petty’s death broke, Dylan paid tribute: “It’s shocking, crushing news. I thought the world of Tom. He was a great performer, full of the light, a friend, and I’ll never forget him.” Tom Petty - Musician - Born October 20, 1950 - Died October 2, 2017 - Aged 66

Beach rocker Jimmy Buffett brought his tour to Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia on October 13th. Canadian vocalist Sarah McLachlan was a special guest, joining in on a cover of a Tom Petty classic and more. McLachlan emerged toward the middle of the main set to join Buffett and The Coral Reefer Band on a cover of “Learning To Fly” from the Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers 1991 album Into the Great Wide Open. The set closing “Pirate Looks At Forty” saw the return of McLachlan to augment the classic Buffett ballad. Buffett and his band finished off the show at Rogers Arena with an encore capped by Petty’s “Wildflowers.” The finale marked the first time Buffett covered the title track to Petty’s 1994 solo LP since 2010.

The Purple Pig is the fundraising arm of the California-Hawaii Elks Association Major Project, Inc. (CHEMPI). The California-Hawaii Elks have raised over $116.2 MILLION since 1950 to address the unmet needs of children with disabilities by developing a program of supporting services to aid these children at no cost to their families. Do you remember when you were younger and filled your piggy bank with coins to save for something special? That’s exactly what the California-Hawaii Elks Association is doing, collecting for some very special children. The California-Hawaii Elks Association provides occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech-language therapy services to children (birth to 18) in their homes. All services are provided free of charge to the children and their families. The Major Project’s preschool vision screening program provides screening by certified vision screeners to children in preschools, nursery schools and daycare centers and children up to third grade enrolled in private schools. In addition, students with disabilities may apply for college, university and vocational school scholarships through the Major Project’s Undergraduate Scholarship Program for Students with Disabilities. Finally, the Major Project provides monetary coverage to eligible children for pediatric vision examinations, treatment and glasses after maximum use or denial of other resources. “A coin a day and they’ll walk, talk, see and play. ”Thank you to all of our members and friends who have donated to the “Purple Pig”. The OCPHC donates hundreds of dollars every year in raffle and 50/50 money along with spare change to the Purple Pig at The Newport Harbor Elks Lodge.

It features 13 songs, ten original compositions and cover songs written by Paul Simon, and Jimmy Buffett. The album contains insightful lyrics, amazing harmonies and musicianship. As Peter says "A favorite song can still stop me in my tracks. It can make 20,000 people sing as one in concert. It can take a mo- ment and make it timeless in our rushing, speeding high- way of a world. In three and a half minutes the story of our lives… Long Story Short. Southbound Mac McAnally Mailboat Records Southbound is Mac McAnally’s first of his 14 albums to present all original materials in orchestral context. The album features 16 tunes from his catalog, each one spotlighting members of Hattiesburg, ’s Festival South Symphony Orchestra. All were previously recorded by McAnally. Many were covered successfully by other artists. This pile of songs runs across more than my entire career,”McAnally notes. “My relationship with music has been around as long as I have. I am blessed to call my passion my ‘job’ and even more blessed to be in a position to play music and benefit not only my family, but many folks from my home state.” Check out our phlock @ www.ocphc.org 14

Escape To Margaritaville Heading To Broadway Cast Recording CD Just Announced

After record setting runs in La Jolla, Louisiana, and , Jimmy Buffett’s stage play, is heading to The Big Apple. The first performance on Broadway at The Marquis Theater in New York will be on February 16th. To coincide with the Broadway opening, Mailboat Records just announced an Escape To Margaritaville Cast Recording CD will be released of songs performed from the play. “I always felt that an album should be a musical journey, and I have made a few of them,” Buffett says in a statement. “The amazing thing to me about this project is that the collection of classic and new songs, chosen from a treasure chest of material, never perceived by yours truly as such a journey, became one. It is a strange and wonderful feeling to hear your songs sung by others with the new and exciting mission to create a melodic ship on which the story of Escape to Margaritaville can sail.” Mac McAnally Wins 9th CMA Award for Musician Of The Year

Mac McAnally’s ninth Association award for Musician of the Year tied him Wednesday night with the late, great . “I may have the same number as him, but I’m not in the same league with Chet Atkins,” McAnally said by phone Thursday afternoon from Nashville. “He was my dad’s hero, and my dad was my hero. Chet Atkins is the reason my daddy put a guitar in my hands and got me lessons.” “It always means a lot, simply because of who votes on it,” he said, meaning his peers. “And it maybe allows me to keep doing what I love. “But it is nearing an embarrassing number. Everybody nominated would’ve been a good choice to win.” The nominees included Paul Franklin, Jerry Douglass, Dan Huff and Derek Wells. Congratulations Mac!

Oh That One Is Easy. My Favorite Jimmy Buffett Song Is… Wait... Our Phlock’s Favorites and Why “If I could just get it on paper. I could tell you what I think I did.”

Jimmy Buffett

Cynthia Lokovic - Fins! “Fins to the left. Fins to the right! This is my favorite Jimmy Buffett song because it reminds me of listening to him while I was young and dancing with my Dad putting our fins in the air!”

Debi Stephens - ! “From the first time I heard it in 1985, it just struck my imagination. Travels and adventures, the gypsy life and Captain Tony!”

A.J. Johncox - Cowboy In The Jungle! “This is my favorite because I want to be a cowboy living in a concrete jungle!”

David Jensen - A Pirate Looks At 40! “Not only is this song beautifully played and sung, it is a semi-autobiography of what we know about Jimmy. It is a beautiful statement about growing up. There is some sadness in it but there is also redemption.”

Chip Langlois - One Particular Harbor! “I spend my free time in One Particular Harbor!”

Joe Chochrek - ! “I’ve got to fly to Saint Somewhere!” Keith Curry - Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes! “My personal theme song and travelling music!” I Wish Lunch will Last Forever! - “Reminds me of a great two hour, two bottle of wine lunch at Nikki Beach in St. Barts. When the Coast is Clear! “A great tune to reflect on, particularly when you know that “closing down the Hangout” refers to a wonderful sports bar/seafood place right on the beach in Gulf Shores Ala.”

Suzan Langlois - A Pirate Looks At 40! “I believe when I first heard the song I was still liv- ing in Indiana dreaming of some day being able to be out on mother mother ocean. And my dreams came true!”

Virginia Lokovic - Hula Girl At Heart! “That’s what I am.”

Dan Watts - Changes In Latitudes! “It was on and got me into Buffett beyond Margaritaville. It’s about travel, escaping the daily grind and looking forward, not what’s over my shoulder. The gratuitous tailgate videos don’t hurt either.”

Mark Lokovic - That’s What Livin’ Is To Me! “Because Jimmy thanks me at the end of the song!” My Twain of thought is loosely bound, I guess it’s time to Mark this down... Check out our phlock @ www.ocphc.org 16
