  • Touching Textures Through the Screen: a Cinematic Investigation of the Contemporary Fashion Film
Touching Textures Through the Screen: A Cinematic Investigation of the Contemporary Fashion Film Name: Simone Houg Supervisor: Dr. M.A.M.B Baronian Student Number: Second Reader: Dr. F.J.J.W. Paalman Address: University of Amsterdam Master Thesis Film Studies Phone Number: 26 June 2015 Email: [email protected] Word Count: 23709 2 Abstract The contemporary fashion film emerged at the beginning of this century and has enabled fashion and film to enter into an equivalent relationship. This symbiotic relationship goes back to the emergence of both disciplines at the beginning of the twentieth century. The fashion film is a relatively new phenomenon that is presented on the Internet as a short film, made by fashion designers and fashion houses that optionally collaborate with well-known filmmakers. The fashion film expresses itself in many forms and through many different styles and characteristics, which makes it hard to grasp. In the case studies on the fashion films commissioned by Dior, Prada, Hussein Chalayan and Maison Margiela, concepts such as colour, movement and haptic visuality are investigated, in order to demonstrate that by focusing on the fashion films' similar use of these cinematic techniques, a definition of the fashion film can be constituted. The fashion film moves in our contemporary society; a society that is focused on ideas of progress, increased mobility and other concepts that characterise a culture of modernity. These concepts evoke feelings of nostalgia and the fashion film responds to this by immersing the spectator into a magical, fictionalised world full of desired garments, objects and settings. The ‘aura’ that surrounds the fashion brand is expressed by letting the viewer fully participate in this fashioned world.

  • The Handbag As Social Idiom and Carrier of Meaning: Inner Self Projected As Outer Person
The Handbag as Social Idiom and Carrier of Meaning: Inner Self Projected as Outer Person Nanette Marguerite Nel Thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Arts in Visual Arts at Stellenbosch University Supervisors: Elizabeth Gunter Carine Terreblanche November 2008 Chapter 4 The Body-Bag Collection and the Secrets Collection 4.1 Introduction Chapter 4 deals with development in my work. My attending a programme in Europe as exchange student influenced both the form and content of my work. I describe such changes here. I also discuss the role of the artist in the creation of meaning as opposed to the role of the viewer. This discussion contextualises my work’s meaning within a wider sociology of art and functions as platform for investigating unintentional and intentional meaning in my work. The Body-Bag Collection and the Secrets Collection serve as reference and subject under discussion. The discussion includes the origins of the Body-Bag Collection and those processes involved in its materialisation. This Collection continues on the private versus public theme of the previously-discussed Collections. Here I relate this theme to body- object or body-handbag relationships as re-created in jewellery. The last Collection that I discuss is the Secrets Collection. In this Collection I focus on objects as contents of handbags and their significations. 4.2 Transformation and Shift in Meaning In these two Collections, the objects represent idea as metaphor or idiom rather than singularity of form, relating a swing from the object as pivotal subject to concept as subject.

The idea of exclusivity in luxury: is it real or created? – A study on how to grow and remain exclusive Francisca Martins Dissertation written under the supervision of Laure Leglise Dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of requirements for the International MSc of Science in Management with Specialization in Marketing, at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, June 2020.

It was locked away inside a glass tower at Bergdorf Goodman on the main floor. I strolled through, as I usually do every time the seasons and the collections change, and noticed this buttery soft brown hobo with impeccable stitching, a confident slouch, and the most alluring antique-like horn handle attached by simple rings on each side. It was everything I wanted to be: sophisticated, well traveled, exotic. That bag represented all my dreams. I had to have it. The bag was Yves Saint Laurent’s Mombasa, designed by the sexiest of designers, Tom Ford. I went to visit it every day for a week until I finally convinced myself that buying it was more important than paying the rent. Once I was the proud owner of my first designer bag, I began to notice how many otherI women had one. I also started to see bags for their color, size, condition, and brand. Designer bags had become my addiction, and I was inducted into a secret society that came with its own silent language spoken between members in knowing nods and glances of approval—in the streets, on the subway, at restaurants. Men have various trophies—cars, watches—and women have bags. It’s true that bags are practical—they protect our belongings and carry us through the day—but they also reveal taste, power, and status.
