A message from Huw Good News! Probably the largest part of my time is spent on visiting people who, because of temporary illness or increasing infirmity, stay at home and do not go out. Sadly, I don’t manage to see any of them very often, so the help I offer is limited to a bit of a chat, a sharing of memories, and (if they wish it) bringing them Holy Communion. However, the people I meet seem surrounded by a host of carers, who are far more reliable than I. These friends and family members do 101 things – visit, collect pensions, go the shops, get prescriptions, or do a bit of gardening or cooking. They are unsung heroes, who get on and do the right thing without making a fuss, simply because it is the right thing to do. As we chat, we may touch on the news, which is full of things going wrong and threats to our stability and comfort. Sooner or later, one of us will contrast the public gloom and alarm with the hidden kindness that is actually near at hand. It can feel as though parts of the media actually enjoy scaring us; certainly most of the media seem to live by the axiom, “Good news is no news”. When I get really shaken and scared it is rarely because of world events, rather it is smaller things that affect me deeply: death, illness, unemployment or simply unkindness. We all know what it is to be afraid – we may even recognise that our fear has no basis, and yet it is still strong. Where can we turn for help when fear bites? Well, for myself I turn to my own circle of family and friends; at times I have turned to medication and counselling. In addition, as a Christian, I cling to the good news of Easter, For Christians the worst news in the world – that Jesus was condemned unfairly, was executed and buried – is linked inextricably with the best – that on the third day he rose from the dead, having conquered death. And in conquering death Jesus has shown us that the power of God is stronger than anything that may be thrown at us. Do I always live a happy, fear free, life as a result? Sadly no; I get as shaken and rattled as anyone. But the love and power of God is stronger than my emotions, even than my fears. And it is that unfailing, strong, love which we celebrate at Easter, and live by every day of the year.

- 1 - A note from the Editors I’m sorry – we can’t help it – the sun shining through warm air, the bursting forth of Spring flowers, and the birds singing happily – all of these things reach into our souls, and we feel inner joy, despite the Lenten season, the terrible news in so many parts of the world, and the politicians shouting at each other. And even despite the infirmities of old age. This is nature’s analogue of Easter – a reminder that the trials of winter and the gales of early spring pass, and that something wonderful then happens. From the Parish Registers Notices in this department will be published in the May edition. Betty Edey It is with great sadness that we note the passing of Betty Edey. Betty attended St Mary's church for many years, bravely enduring the disabilities of old age in recent years. She was a very loyal member of the Women's Guild, of which she was Treasurer for some time. Despite her short stature, her flower arrangements for church services, festivals and weddings were magnificent – she had worked at the Constance Spry School in , and she knew exactly how it should be done! She would have been 100 years old in November. We will all miss her – she was such a character! We will be having a stall again at the May Day Fair. Janey Bethune-Williams 01344 883854 Spotlights And Youth Music The Spotlights Musical Theatre Group (SMTG) has chosen ‘Youth Music’ as its charity for 2016/17. This charity supports music projects for disadvantaged children; it was set up by the parents of Alice Gross. Serena Kay, Spotlights Music Director, taught Alice singing for 3 years and she was an exceptionally talented musician, singer and performer. Tragically, Alice was murdered in 2014 – many people will remember this – and her loss impacted so many in truly devastating ways. Out of their grief and loss her family set up ‘Youth Music’ to help other children. Serena is convinced that had Alice lived she would have had a highly successful music career. Spotlights will fund-raise for ‘Youth Music’ for a year, maybe two; and they have already set aside £200 as a first donation, arising out of their Christmas concert at the Berystede on Christmas Eve. The group hope that further donations can be made following the performance of their summer show, ‘My Fair Lady’, which will be performed at Papplewick School in Ascot from Thursday 13 July to Saturday

- 5 - 15 July. Performances will be at 7:30pm, and there will also be a matinee at 2:30pm on the Saturday. Tickets cost £16 for adults and £11 for children under 16, and can be bought from any SMTG member or from the group's box office on 0333 666 3366. A transaction charge of £1.50 will be made for box office bookings. Tickets can also be purchased on line at www.ticketsource.co.uk/spotlightsmusicaltheatregroup May Day Fair Coordinator required We are urgently looking for someone to take on this role, as, after 13 years at the job, it is time for me to step down. The May Day Fair Coordinator helps to organise and plan the many strands that go into making the Fair a fund-raising success that runs really smoothly on the day. The role is supported by an experienced committee. The work, after so many years of experience, is streamlined and straightforward, and anyone taking over would have the support of the existing committee, which includes Angela and Janey who have been helping since it started 20 years ago! (I will also be staying on to help.). The coordinator job currently includes booking the stallholders, but this could be a separate role. The Fair only takes 3 months to organise, and we have 4-5 committee meetings in the period. I myself have had a lot of enjoyment working with my friends on the committee and it gives us all great pleasure to see the community come together and enjoy themselves. This is a really important job to fill – it would be a shame for the fair not to continue for want of a coordinator. So if you would like to find out more about it, please contact Wendy French on 07713 348913 or Lynn Jenkins (Treasurer) on 01344 884117, or email us on mayday@winkfieldrowfair . Wendy French NEW Cranbourne & Winkfield Community Orchestra During the 2016 Warfield and Winkfield Arts Week, it was suggested by local people in the audiences of music events that they would like to play music again and this might be in the form of a Community Orchestra. One of the aims of joining would be to perform as an orchestra during the 2017 Arts Week.

- 6 - Carl Lister Music; Director at St Peter’s Church Cranbourne (which is the venue for many of our Arts Week music events) is now planning to form a new local Community Orchestra starting in May 2017. It would be called the Cranbourne and Winkfield Community Orchestra and be based at St Peter’s Church Cranbourne. They would meet regularly and work up a programme of musical events. So, maybe it has been “a few years” since you played an instrument and you’d like to start playing again; maybe you want to meet up with other local musicians - whatever the reason if you are interested in joining this new venture Carl Lister would like to hear from you. To find out more details of the orchestra, dates etc. and to confirm your interest in joining the orchestra please send Carl Lister an email to this email address [email protected] and we can get back to you with more information Your email should also contain the following details 1. More news from around the parish St Mary’s Women’s Guild Afternoon tea at the Berystede Twenty members had enjoyed the Afternoon Tea at the Berystede Hotel. Flowers Mrs Potter explained that she would prepare 100 posies for the United Benefice Mothering Sunday service on 26 March. She would also organise the lilies for Easter. The cost will be £2 per bloom. Our speaker Judith Usher was the speaker and her talk was entitled ‘Escape from Turkey during the invasion of Cyprus 1974’ Judith explained that she would deliver her talk, present a slides show and then hold a quiz. Members were fascinated to learn of Judith’s personal experience during her time as a teacher on Cyprus. In 1973 she flew out to the island to take up a teaching post and, on the RAF flight she met her future husband, Tim. First impressions were of a lovely island with fine weather. There were 3 military bases where teachers were required, and her flat was located in Limassol – an important town. She indicated other relevant places on a map: Nicosia, the capital and Famagusta, a tourist resort; and she pointed out a green line crossing the island which had been marked by the UN because of the unrest in the 1960’s.

- 14 - Judith and Tim decided to spend Easter visiting Beirut in the Lebanon and they thoroughly enjoyed their visit. For their summer holiday they decided to travel by car to Turkey and set off on the 8 July. They reached Bodrum on the 20 July and this was the very date when the Turks invaded the northern coast of Cyprus and established a red line dividing the island into two parts. They were advised to remove the Cypriot sticker from their vehicle as they continued on their journey to Ephesus. They reached Istanbul on 29 July and contacted the Embassy to ascertain what to do next. They followed the advice to drive to Ankara, where an RAF Hercules plane was waiting to return them to Cyprus. Their car was put into a compound and they joined the 20 or 30 people in their party of fellow teachers for the 2½hour flight to Limassol. There was fighting there and they could not return to their own homes: instead they went to live on the base at the home of the Headmaster. In fact they stayed in his garden under a flimsy shelter. The holiday resort of Famagusta was now a ghost town under the control of the Turks. In November Tim received a ‘phone call from the Colonel of the Regiment to say that they could collect their car from the compound, but that it would be advisable to take along a bottle of whisky to bribe the Turks! Thus the car was returned, but this was not the end of the story: those folk who had returned to for the summer break never did return to Cyprus, and so Judith and others had the task of boxing up their belongings to be sent back to them in the UK. After the quiz many members asked questions. It was a fascinating talk and Judith described everything so well. We look forward to learning what her next talk will be about. Future Meetings 4 April: AGM and Easter service 2 May: Revd Huw Mordecai - The Brontës Lesley Philpot – President St Mary’s bell ringers Well, the bell ringers’ quiz went really well again this year! We had a record turnout, and had only just had enough tables to cope, which was fantastic. Our thanks to Trevor who again delivered an enjoyable, interesting and

- 15 - varied quiz. Our thanks also to all of you who came and supported us, enabling us to raise just under £800 for the church electric fund. The tower ringers have managed to recruit a new member, who is managing well. Any one interested in having a go would be in good company – it is always easier if someone else is at the starting point with you. So come along on a Monday evening at 7.30 or give Tony a ring. We welcomed a scout group to church to have a go at both the tower and the hand bells, and this proved very popular. The scouts worked hard and managed to chime the tower bells successfully, and they even managed to ring some tunes on the hand bells, despite never having rung before! Surely if they can do that, then so can you! Come along on any Wednesday evening at 7:30 or give Jill a ring to discuss. The hand bell ringers attended a rally in Tolworth to practice some of the Guildford music for the service this year – definitely worth attending if you are free. It is a service with a huge bell orchestra, with bells ranging from tiny to those the size of buckets! The bell ringers’ AGM was held at our house – our thanks to Brian for chairing this and keeping us on track. All positions were filled and our social calendar discussed and organised – a very important part of bell ringing!! We are looking forward to being a part of the 5th Sunday in April service and practicing hard to try and perfect a lovely piece of music. Jill Glennerster 884071 St Mary's Junior Choir The choristers sang well for Family Matins on 12 March, and are now rehearsing for the United Benefice Mothering Sunday service on 26 March. They will demonstrate their musical skills at that service , and will also help to distribute the posies. Attendance at Family Matins continues and after Easter we hope they will also attend the Communion service on the third Sunday of the month. Lesley Philpot

- 16 - Thoughts of all sorts A Tale of the Unexpected What a shock it must have been to be told that the first shall be last, the meek shall inherit the earth, it’s more blessed to give than to receive, and adults should learn from children, not the other way round. No wonder these words of Jesus repelled some of His hearers and attracted others. They still do. The ultimate challenge was His formula for success: “Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.” All this began to make sense to His group of disciples when they encountered Him unexpectedly, after He had been crucified. On Friday they had seen Him die the despicable death of a criminal. That was a huge disappointment, another lost cause. Then Sunday’s massive contradiction: a corpse transformed into an indestructible body. Christ was alive with renewed vigour, breathing confidence into His disciples. It was the vindication of everything He had taught and done. They began to spread the emphatic message that God brings life out of death. This was an announcement, not an opinion; a declaration, not doctrine. It divided the hearers. Some believed it and some didn’t. St Paul acknowledged this in his usual uncompromising manner: “The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God”. More contradictions were to follow. The early missionaries described their experiences as “honour and dishonour, bad report and good report; genuine, yet regarded as impostors; known, yet regarded as unknown; dying, and yet we live on; beaten, and yet not killed; sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything.” In 1945 the German Pastor and theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer was hanged for his part in a plot to assassinate Hitler. He was 39. His last words were “This is the end – for me, the beginning of life.” Today, the ‘Open Doors’ charity reports that every month 322 Christians are killed for their faith. At the same time it’s estimated that every day there are 33,000 new Christians in Africa alone. Easter is God’s pledge that evil is impermanent. The final contradiction is asserted by the 16th Century poet John Donne in his sonnet, “Death be not Proud: “One short sleep past, we wake eternally, And death shall be no more; Death, thou shalt die”.
