The Swedish Film Institute is a collective voice for film in Sweden, and a meeting-place for experiences and insights that elevate film on all levels. Through a diversity of narratives discussions and insights are established, which strengthen the individual and our democracy. Together, we enable more people to create, experience and be enriched by film. 4 Förord Preface 2020 var ett minst sagt utmanande år för den svenska filmbranschen. Hela värdekedjan påverkades, från inställda och fördyrade produktioner, till uteblivna intäkter för distributörer och visningsaktörer. Den digitala utvecklingen intensifierades kraftigt under pandemin. Samtidigt som året i mångt och mycket kan beskrivas med ordet ”kris” har intresset för att se film, inte minst svensk film, varit högt. Stängda biografer och inställda premiärer tycks inte ha påverkat konsumentens efterfrågan på filminnehåll, snarare tvärtom. Under året ökade filmtittandet via vod (video on demand) kraftigt och digitala tjänster stod för lejonparten av filmkonsumtionen under 2020. Årets rapport visar effekterna av pandemin på den svenska filmmarknaden utifrån flera olika perspektiv. Rapporten är indelad i fyra kapitel; Filmutbud, Filmkonsumtion, Produktionsstöd och finansiering samt Jämställdhet. Förhoppningen är att detta sammantaget ska ge en heltäckande bild över filmen i Sverige idag och ge nya insikter om filmmarknadens utveckling. Josefin Schröder, Strategisk analytiker 2020 was a challenging year for the Swedish film industry, to say the least. The whole value chain was affected, from cancelled and more expensive productions, to loss of revenue for distributors and cinemas. The digital development greatly intensified during the pandemic. The year can in many ways be described with the word ”crisis”, but at the same time the interest in watching film, and Swedish film in particular, has been considerable. Closed cinemas and cancelled releases do not seem to have had an effect on the consumer’s demand for film content – rather the opposite. During the yearfilm viewing via VOD (video on demand) increased heavily and digital services made up the majority of film consumption in 2020. This year’s report shows the effects of the pandemic on the Swedish film market from different perspectives. The report is divided into four chapters: Film Releases, Film Consumption, Production Funding and Financing, and Gender Equality. We hope that this will give a comprehensive picture of film in Sweden today and provide new insights regarding the development of the film market. Men antalet vod-premiärer ökade markant. Se upp för Jönssonligan var den enda svenska filmen som hade en renodlad vod-lansering.
