O C T O B E R 2-30 Volleyball Lessons Come out and enhance your volleyball skills. The expert coaches at Rally Pointe will break down the skills to the fundamentals and build them up to ensure each student is game ready. This is a great opportunity to strengthen volleyball skills. Whether you are just learning or an experienced player everyone will enjoy this activity. This event will meet some of the learning outcomes for Physical Education.

O C T O B E R 3 Calgary Corn Maze – C a n c elled due to Weather Join us for a trip to the Calgary Corn Maze! The group will rotate through the Petting Zoo, Plant Educational Talk, Gemstone Mining, Pig Races, Grain Tractor Ride, Playground Activities, Mini Golf, Corn Maze and Jumping Pillows according to the schedule provided to us by the Corn Maze. Please feel free to tour with the group or explore parent and student together. The group will have a designated snack area where backpacks can be stored. There is a concession for those who wish to use that option or feel free to bring snacks. Please arrive 15 minutes early to check in and drop off backpacks at the group area (please note this is not a secure area). We will not wait for late arrivals as it would cause the group to miss a station. Please do your best to arrive on time or early.

O C T O B E R 5 Rothney Observatory Come and join us at the Rothney Observatory for an evening of star gazing. Learn about the stars in a guided program put on by the Observatory staff. This event will meet some of the learning outcomes for Science.

O C T O B E R 6 Weaselhead/ Glenmore Park Preservation Society Join us at Weaselhead Park for a full day program in the park. Grade 1-3 students will study Animal Life Cycle, Grade 4-6 students will study Tree & Forest, Grade 7-9 students will study Freshwater. We look forward to seeing you there! O C T O B E R 6 & Bellevue Mine Frank Slide Learn why Turtle Mountain fell and if another rockslide will come down. An Interpretive Centre Guide will lead is on a 1.5km trail through the rock debris to discover the facts first-hand. We will return to the Centre and watch a movie about the disaster. You will never forget the amazing stories of tragedy and triumph you will hear during your visit to the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre.

Bellevue Mine Tour an authentic underground coal mine and experience what it was like to be in a coal mine. The tour will take you 300 meters horizontally into the mine, but at the end of the tour you are 150 feet below the surface. The Bellevue Underground Mine interprets the history of Western Canadian mining communities through its tours. The tour instills a sense of discovery and belonging. Stories from the Bellevue Underground Mine are Canadian experiences: the birth of labour unions, occupational safety, industry, immigration, and transportation. This activity will meet some of the learning outcomes of Social Studies and Science.

O C T O B E R 11 A Taste of Studio ME – F i n e A r t s Come out and join us at Studio ME for a sampling of Fine Arts courses. The group will rotate through Art, Dance, Drumming, Music and Drama classes and each class will have a 30 minute time slot with a short break between each class. This will be an excellent opportunity to explore your creativity and find the art form that most speaks to you. I look forward to seeing you there! O C T O B E R 12 Jr./Sr. High Fall Soccer Club Please come and join us for soccer this fall! We will be working on basic skills and footwork and moving on to more advanced drills. We will also be participating in mini games and scrimmages. This event meets some of the learning outcomes for Junior High and High School Physical Education.

O C T O B E R 12 Jr/Sr. High Royal Tyrell Museum – C a n c e l l e d , Lo w Registration Students will join Mr. VanOverloop on a bus journey to the Royal Tyrell Museum. The bus will be at South Centre Mall (west entrance of The Bay) at 7:30 am for student pick-up and will drop off in the same location at 6:00 pm. Please be prepared for the weather and bring a lunch, snacks and a water bottle (an itinerary and supply list will be sent out prior to this trip). This excursion will be supervised by two veteran science teachers and meets some of the learning outcomes for Science.

O C T O B E R 13 High School Event – Escape Room - F u l l Join us at The Locked Room and participate in the Great Train Heist escape. You are the most notorious thieves in the badlands! You’ve had a great run, but the law is right on your heels. You decide that you need to make one last big score before you call it quits for good and go into hiding. This is it! Your Final Heist! As the train rolls through , you are waiting on the outskirts. Everything goes off without a hitch, you abandon your horses and board the train. But in the distance you see dust kicking up. Johnny Law is closing in, and you don’t have much time before he catches up with you. It’s now or never. This event will meet some of the learning outcomes for Science and Math.

O C T O B E R 16 & 23 High School Event - Wall Climbing – Cancelled, Low Registration Come join us at the Calgary Climbing Centre and learn the basics of wall climbing. The knowledgeable instructors will give helpful tips to students who are just starting wall climbing and help challenge those with experience. This event meets some of the learning outcomes for High School Physical Education.

O C T O B E R 17- D E C E M B E R 19 High School Event – Volleyball Team Come out and join us for Volleyball Lessons. We will be focusing on the fundamental skills including passing, blocking, hitting, serving, positioning, and game strategy. This event meets some of the learning outcomes for High School Physical Education.

O C T O B E R 17 Math Olympics We will be exploring the math strands of algebra, geometry, measurement, relations, logic, games, and odds and probability through individual and team exploration. Students will be learning how math is integrated into various life tasks and areas of interest. Students will also get a chance to play some giant games, which involve understanding numeracy, reasoning, and math skills.

O C T O B E R 18 Cochrane Environmental Society - F u l l Students will learn about the importance of Biodiversity and how the Cochrane Ecological Institute works to protect and enhance Biodiversity. This guided tour takes participants to various enclosures to learn about native wildlife species in their care. The enclosures are large, thus there is no guarantee that all animals will be viewed. Animals that students are likely to see include: deer, moose, elk, bison, owls, hawks, a raven, a pigeon, chickens and wild turkeys. A variety, of curricular connections will be made and the tour may customize based on students interests.

Important Note Dress in long pants, layered clothing with appropriate footwear appropriate for hiking. Bring plenty of your own drinking water, and your desire to learn. This activity will meet some of the learning outcomes of Science for Grades 1-9.

O C T O B E R 20 Royal Tyrell Museum Trip In the early 20th century, fossil hunters did not always document their excavation sites and key information was often lost. With the students' help, we locate and uncover one of these lost quarries. During this interactive, multi-media program, participants experience the badlands and discover how scientists find fossils. This curriculum-based, hands-on program will be brought to life by the science of paleontology. Arrive at the Museum at 11 AM. Meet place will be the main entrance. This event meets some of the learning outcomes for Science.

O C T O B E R 20 Sports for Fun – V o l l e y b a l l Come out and join us for some fun on the courts! Students will work on developing FUNdamental volleyball skills through drills and games. O C T O B E R 24 Join us for an afternoon at the Zoo. Grade 1-6 students will take part in the Plant Safari program and grade 7-12 students will participate in the Canadian Wilds Edu-trek program. In the Plants Safari program, students will go on a walking tour to uncover the secrets that plants hold to life and the importance of their survival. In the Canadian Wilds Edu-trek program students will follow the footsteps of some of Canada's diverse wildlife through different ecosystems as we tour the aspen parklands, Rocky Mountains and boreal forests at the Zoo. After the school program please feel free to stay and tour the zoo with your student(s) as a public patron. This event meets some of the learning outcomes for Science.

O C T O B E R 25 4CATS Art Studio – Edgedale Calgary

This project is inspired by Claude Monet and his impressionism artwork of beauty in nature. We will be painting, on a small 11x14" canvas (already on a frame to be wall mountable), a picture of a lily pond.

We will be using many fun mediums including: - water color, - acrylic paint, - variety of amazing paintbrush styles & sparkles!

We will paint the background, add lilies and flower vines and talk about Monet in a story telling style for a fun art history lesson while we work on our art. :)

O C T O B E R 27 Madagascar – Storybook Theatre Join Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Melman the Giraffe, Gloria the hip hip Hippo and, of course, those hilarious, plotting penguins as they bound onto your stage in the musical adventure of a lifetime. Based on the smash DreamWorks animated motion picture, Madagascar – A Musical Adventure follows all of your favorite crack-a-lackin’ friends as they escape from their home in New York’s Central Park Zoo and find themselves on an unexpected journey to the madcap world of King Julien’s Madagascar. This event meets some of the learning outcomes for Art. Please arrive at least 15 minutes early for seating and check in. The theatre will not be admitting late ticket holders.

M ONDAY , O C T O B E R 30 GEOCACHING 101 – C a l g a r y Join us for an introduction to the world of GEOCACHING 101!

Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location. This event will take place outside so please dress for the weather. In order to participate students will need a Smart Phone with Geocaching App (visit Geocaching.com and create a free membership and download the app to your smart device) or a GPS electronic device and weather appropriate clothing. This activity will meet some of the learning outcomes of Physical Education.

W EDNESDAY , N O V E M B E R 1-22 S k i p T i m e – Can Skip Program SkipTime is a Calgary based jump rope program, for students aged 6 to 16. Skippers learn individual rope skipping skills, partner skipping, long rope, and double dutch. Jump rope is a technical sport that greatly increases a child's fitness, agility, coordination, and rhythm. It's also one of the most fun and most dynamic sports for kids. This event meets some of the learning outcomes for Physical Education.

The Centre for Learning@HOME has programed 4 weeks of skipping lessons with SKIPTIME and the CanSkip Badge Program in Single Rope and Double Dutch. Please bring indoor athletic shoes, comfortable PE clothing, a skipping rope & bottled water

You recently brought forward a couple of concerns to the captain about the pirate ship. Looking back, that was a bad idea. Captain Blackbeard commands his ship with an iron fist. Now you and your matey’s have been locked away in the brig for questioning and the captain's tyranny. You must find a way to free yourselves from your shackles and find your way off of this cursed ship or it be the plank for you!" This event meets some of the learning outcomes for Science and Math.

N O V E M B E R 2 – Action, Reaction, Contraption Join us at TELUS Spark Science Centre for the Action, Reaction, Contraption program. In this program students will design, build and test elements of your very own Chain Reaction Machine. Challenge yourself with hands-on STEAM concepts and skills in this creative and collaborative workshop. This event meets some of the learning outcomes for Science.

N O V E M B E R 2 TELUS Spark - 3D Design This Join us at TELUS Spark Science Centre for the 3D Design This program. The program is designed to spark thinking within a 3D environment. Give students an appreciation for the power of 3D design while developing the skills of spatial awareness and Computer Assisted Design (CAD). Students will build objects using 3D printed shapes, and then recreate and manipulate these objects in 3D design software. This event meets some of the learning outcomes for Science.

N O V E M B E R 3 The Military Museum Tour As we get closer to Remembrance Day, let’s take some time to visit the Military Museum and pay tribute to our armed forces. Our group will be seeing the Newfoundland and The Somme theatre presentation and touring both Canada and The Great War and Army Museums of exhibits. This event meets some of the learning outcomes for Social Studies.

F RIDAY , N O V E M B E R 3 Fusion Glass – C r e e k s i d e - Color Me Mine - FULL Color Me Mine - Creekside is instructing us in Fusion Glass. Our student will create a 6" Glass project. They will be shown how to decorate using bits of glass strips, rods, pebbles, frit, cut glass etc... Students will choose from a 6" Bowl, 6" Square or "6 Sushi plate. Candle holders and Sun Catchers can be made out of the 6" glass base depending in individual preference. This event meets some of the learning outcomes for Art.

N O V E M B E R 6 National Geographic Live – Pink Boots & A Machete Come and join us for a National Geographic Live presentation by world explorer Mireya Mayor. Mireya, has been hailed as a “female Indiana Jones,” and is an inspiration to young people interested in science and exploration. She’ll share stories, images, and film clips of her adventures, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the hardships and danger of life in the field, along with the moments of discovery that make it all worthwhile. This event meets some of the learning outcomes for Physical Education and Math.

These lessons will be following the Lifesaving Society’s Swim for Life program. Students will be assessed on the first lesson and may be moved based on ability level. Children build a motorized vehicle and learn how to optimize it. They use gears, wheels and axles to reduce friction and make work easier. Then they shift things into a higher gear to get a hands-on understanding of transmissions and gear ratios. Finally, they each build and test their own Mad Science® Hovercraft XS – a vehicle model they can take home! This event meets some of the learning outcomes for Science.

D E C E M B E R 8 High School Event - West Edmonton Mall Trip This is a great opportunity to meet new friends or reconnect with friends from Camp Evergreen to socialize and do some Christmas Shopping. West Edmonton Mall has over 800 stores, 100 eating establishments and RIDES (We will NOT be going to the water park). This is a school chaperoned event. Students will be required to be in groups of 4 minimum at all times. A bus will be provided leaving from Okotoks and stopping in South Calgary, North Calgary and Red Deer before completing the drive to Edmonton. Come out and enjoy West Ed Mall!

Students will be participating in a curriculum based, holiday themed Amazing Race across the mall with their peers! This activity will take about an hour of your time after lunch and then you will be able to break out to browse the Mall.

D E C E M B E R 15 Polar Express Train at Aspen Crossing Journey to the North Pole!

Set to the sounds of the motion picture soundtrack, families are sure to delight in their journey to the North Pole, complete with hot chocolate and cookies served on board the train. Passengers will be entertained by many of the characters from the movie as well as a reading of The Polar Express book. Upon arrival at the North Pole, Santa will greet the children and each child will receive their own sleigh bell, just like in the movie, to those who BELIEVE.

Experience caroling and holiday entertainment that will surely become an annual holiday tradition for the whole family. Families are encouraged to wear their pajamas for the ride and join in on the magic of Christmas!

The Train ride is approximately one hour long and includes your golden train ticket, hot chocolate in a ceramic Polar Express collector’s mug, a delicious cookie, as well as your first gift of Christmas, a silver bell.

E V E N T V O L U N T E E R S N EEDED The Centre for Learning@HOME is actively recruiting parent volunteer chaperones. PARENT VOLUNTEER CHAPERONE ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Parent volunteer chaperones will be responsible for a group of students ranging from 5-18 years of age and group sizes ranging from 5- 25 dependent on the event. Successful volunteers will be contacted to sign up for events on a seasonal basis in line with the event release schedule for the school. Parent volunteer chaperones will be asked to chaperone several events per year. QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS Friendly, responsible adult who enjoys working with and supervising students of all ages. Criminal records check with vulnerable sector required for all successful candidates. PREFERRED SKILLS Friendly, approachable, responsible, experience working with children is an asset.
