In this latter sense, sovereignty and the law it supports are an explicitly spatial phenomenon, as can be seen in the meanings of the Greek word nomos, which aside from the law can also refer to a division that marks out a specific territory. This article posits that the Marvel crossover event entitled Secret Wars (2015, 2016) encapsulates the ways in which superhero comics might help us to understand the spatiality of sovereignty. It also considers how resistance to Doom’s law was focused on the transgression of borders and the creation of alternative spatial arrangements. Keywords: Agamben; graphic justice; law; political theory; Schmitt Introduction: When the World Goes Rogue Fifteen years of a ‘War on Terror’ have been an especially fruitful time for studying superhero comics. The exceptional politics of the Bush Doctrine encouraged numerous scholars to return to important questions about the relationship between law and violence, and the nature of a state of emergency that are central to both the superhero mythos and an understanding of sovereign power. At a time when states themselves became rogue or took on the role of the vigilante—at least from the perspective of established International Law—scholars naturally gravitated towards thinking about what the exceptional status of the superhero might tell us. -

The Origins and Innovations of the Fantastic Four
“Meet the Fantastic Four”: The Origins and Innovations of The Fantastic Four The original idea to put a team together came from neither Stan Lee nor Jack Kirby. In Origins of Marvel Comics (1974), Stan Lee talks about his various roles “writing television material, advertising copy, and newspaper features” as well as “turning out comics by the carload, but nothing much was happening” (“If One”). Joan, his wife, encouraged him to focus on comics. Soon after he talked with publisher Martin Goodman who brought up The Justice League of America’s sales figures and asked him why don’t they “put out a comic book that features a team of super heroes?” (“If One”). The popular legend is that Goodman heard about the high sales of Justice League of America from Jack Liebowitz during a golf game (Evanier 114). Leibowitz said that encounter never happened, “but everybody knew what the sales were” anyway (114). Stan Lee recounts some version of this basic story in numerous interviews from 1981, 1998, 1999, and 2005 (Pitt 87, Thomas 137, Cangialosi 167, McLaughlin 210). In any event, neither Kirby nor Lee were creating something wholly original. For example, the DC group Challengers of the Unknown debuted in Showcase #6 in February of 1957 before appearing in their own title in May of 1958. Among numerous similarities, Rocky, one of the four Challengers, gains the ability in issue #3 to shoot flame from his body and turn himself invisible. Various sources attribute Kirby as either creator or co-creator of the series (Evanier 106). There were all sorts of other sources predating Challengers of the Unknown. -

Victor recently discovered that his mother, the dark arts master Cynthia Von Doom, was not dead as he had believed. MARVEL POP ART PRODUCTIONS The Classic Marvel Comics Group—Set in the Modern Day A Proposal by Carlton J Donaghe This is a proposal for a line of giant, magazine-sized Marvel Comics, published for an all-ages, general market under the banner ‘Marvel Pop Art Productions.’ This line doesn’t replace any imprint currently published by Marvel. Instead, this self- contained set of 12 monthly titles will present a modernized version of the original Marvel Comics Group (with some later characters thrown in) packaged into an easily- accessible product designed for the general distribution market. The depiction of Marvel’s most recognizable characters in their well-known original costumes and settings will both benefit from and promote the continued use of the classic comics in merchandise and licensing. Format Each issue of every title will contain three 20-page comics, each comic with its own interior cover page and two-page spread of introductions and recaps using art from previous issues. In addition, every issue will contain a set of features, called the FOOM (Friends Of Ol’ Marvel) Pages—all in a single format, pulling the entire line together, making every one of the twelve titles an individual part of a single, sprawling epic. The front cover of each title will be a modernized version of the classic Marvel Comics Group format from the mid-1960’s, decorated with captions and blurbs in boxes, circles and arrows, and an action-oriented cover, drawn by a regular rotation of the three interior artists, depicting an exciting scene from their own story in the moment it is happening.
