Mike Butler Campaign For International 2nd Vice President

August 5, 2013

Dear Lions of Texas

PID Mike Butler received the endorsement of the Lions of Texas at the State Conven- tion held in Austin, Texas on May 31-June 1, 2013. He received in excess of 1200 votes state wide in his quest to become the 2nd Vice President of the International Association of Lions Clubs.

Not receiving the endorsement of the International Board of Directors in Hamburg, Mike turned to the leadership from Texas, other states and other countries seeking counsel on how to proceed. Their support and encouragement, along with the leadership of Texas reaffirming their belief in PID Butler, has convinced him to seek the position of 2nd Vice President by remaining on the ballot in Toronto, Canada and allowing delegates to cast their vote for the most qualified candidate.

Accordingly, the Lions of Texas have a race on their hands. You can help in TWO WAYS: First and foremost register for the International Convention in Toronto, Canada and go and vote! And/or, second, help defray the cost of the campaign with a monetary dona- tion.

Make your check payable to: Mike Butler Campaign

Mail to: PDG Sam Lindsey, Campaign Treasurer P. O. Box 1100 Hilltop Lakes, TX 77871

This race will be won, but only with your support. Thank you in advance for your ef- forts. Toronto will be a great place for the next big Texas Victory. See you in Toronto!

Join us in serving the world,

PDG Ernesto “T. J.” Tijerina Campaign Chairman

A group of Lions from our Club meets at 9am at the MOWAM location and we bag 360 grocery bags full of non- perishable items. These bags are then delivered to the homes of clients in need.

TLERC – Used Eyeglass Pick-up Southwestern Motor Transport (SMT)

Good news for TLERC. Chris Withers, President of Southwestern Motor Transport has agreed to begin picking up glasses in all of your districts at least once per quarter and more in some locations if the volume indicates that is needed. I need you to work with your governor to establish these loca- tions. The glasses will be picked up in a small truck trailer and carried back to their terminal for ship- ment to Midland. I will include a map of terminal locations with this email. Any space that you consid- er would need enough room to get the truck in and out. Warehouse space with a dock would be pref- erable. A bill of laden will be provided and you can make extra copies. The trucking company will need one day notice with a contact telephone number. When you call for pickup they will give you a four hour window for pickup time. One of the things that will be key is accepting glasses in good strong boxes that are closed tightly with tape to prevent spills. If the volume of glasses indicates you might have to establish another pickup site.

This is a good opportunity for TLERC. Let’s work together to make this happen and redirect money spent on delivery to a great- er cause. I know there will be questions. Send them own. This firm did some work for us when we were working on the ware- house.

Southwest Motor Transport delivered its first load to TLERC this past week consisting of six pallets of glasses. This shipment saved a club or TLERC $500 in shipping cost. We have also purchased another fork lift. Once the TLERC Director has located a warehouse site to load and ship glasses from. If you have any ques- tions please call me at 830-660-5725.

Remember TLERC and THE BUNKHOUSE When PREPARING YOUR BUDGET.

I leave you with a quote by Johann Paul Richter “Do not wait for extraordinary circumstances to do good; Try to use ordinary situations.”

Good News. Boxes of glasses for shipment do not need to be palletized. The boxes need to be stur- dy and labeled. Southwestern Motor Transport will email or fax you a bill of laden that you can make copies of. Each box must have a bill of laden at- tached to it. This will make it easier for those who do not have access to pallets. I will continue to be point of contact for shipping while we work the bugs out. When you get ready to ship, call me with an address and contact phone; SMT will contact you with a pickup time. This will allow money that was being used to move glasses for other Lion’s project. This is a wonderful gift from Southwest- ern Motor Transport. Spread the word. It may inspire other firms and companies to partner with Lions Clubs all over the state. All you have to do is ask.

I leave you with a quote by Ann Landers- “Character is defined by what you are willing to do when the spotlight has been turned off, the ap- plause has died down, and no is around to give you credit.”

Recently, our meetings are composed mainly of preparing for our Leo Confer- ence in San Antonio in November. The Leo’s have been invited to do a service project for the San Antonio Lions District 2A2 by participating in the Veterans parade and have been asked to bring any musical instruments including our voices! We have been invited to a ham- burger picnic in the park following the parade!

The Conference will be a very busy one for us and we have lots of things to talk about, plan and teach for the 3 day meeting! Our Lago Vista Club has volun- teered to teach leadership games to the group at the conference. There will be 3 contests which we plan to enter also! And personally, I think we are in a good place to win since one is a Power Point and our very own Leo’s put it together! The other contest is a poster display, which we have too! These are group contests and then there will be an indi- vidual photo contest. I am hoping our Leo’s are putting together their photos from where they have helped out in the community and will think about entering the contest! I plan to!
