We documented the highest vertebrate scavenger diversity of any study to date (39 birds and mammals). Scavengers represented 10.9% of local birds and 28.3% of local mammals, emphasizing the diversity of food-web vectors supported by pumas, and the positive contributions of pumas and potentially other subordinate, apex felids to ecological stability. Scavenger diversity at carcasses was most influenced by the length of time the carcass was sampled, and the biological variables, temperature and prey weight. Nevertheless, diversity was relatively consistent across carcasses. We also identified six additional stalk- and-ambush carnivores weighing > 20 kg, that feed on prey larger than themselves, and are subordinate to other predators. Together with pumas, these seven felids may provide distinctive ecological functions through their disproportionate production of carrion and subsequent contributions to biodiversity. -

New Distributional and Temporal Bird Records from Chihuahua, Mexico

B.O.C. 2016 136(4) New distributional and temporal bird records from Chihuahua, Mexico by Israel Moreno-Contreras, Fernando Mondaca, Jaime Robles-Morales, Manuel Jurado, Javier Cruz, Alonso Alvidrez & Jaime Robles-Carrillo Received 25 May 2016 Summary.—We present noteworthy records from Chihuahua, northern Mexico, including several first state occurrences (e.g. White Ibis Eudocimus albus, Red- shouldered Hawk Buteo lineatus) or species with very few previous state records (e.g. Tricoloured Heron Egretta tricolor, Baltimore Oriole Icterus galbula). We also report the first Chihuahuan records of Red-tailed Hawk Buteo jamaicensis harlani and ‘White-winged’ Dark-eyed Junco Junco hyemalis aikeni (the latter only the second Mexican record). Other records improve our knowledge of the distribution of winter visitors to the Chihuahuan Desert ecoregion that formerly were considered transients, including several parulids. Our field work has also improved knowledge of the distribution of certain Near Threatened (e.g. Snowy Plover Charadrius nivosus) and Vulnerable species (e.g. Pinyon Jay Gymnorhinus cyanocephalus). We also confirmed various breeding localities for Yellow-crowned Night Heron Nyctanassa violacea in Chihuahua. The avian diversity of Mexico encompasses 95 families, 493 genera and 1,150 species following IOC taxonomy (cf. Navarro-Sigüenza et al. 2014) or c.11% of total avian richness worldwide. Mexico is ranked as the 11th most important country in terms of bird species richness and fourth in the proportion of endemic species (Navarro-Sigüenza et al. 2014). However, Chihuahua—the largest Mexican state—is poorly surveyed ornithologically, mostly at sites in and around the Sierra Madre Occidental (e.g., Stager 1954, Miller et al. -

Box 25112, Santa Fe, NM 87504 3Curent address: 1819 Meadowview Dr. NW, Albuquerque, NM 87104, [email protected] 1 December 2006 New Mexico Department of Game and Fish Executive Summary We compiled available published and unpublished records of Gray Vireos in the state of New Mexico and produced an overview of the distribution, status, and biology of the species in the state. We identified 49 population sites in 20 of New Mexico's 33 counties and estimated a maximum number of documented territories at 418. The largest known concentrations in the state are located in the Guadalupe Mountains (92 territories), Manzanita Mountains (60), Navajo Dam area (44), Caja del Rio area (25), and the Quebradas area (25); smaller but significant concentrations (10 to 17 territories) are in the Organ Mountains, San Andres NWR, the La Plata area, the Ladron Mountains, the Counselor area, near Glenwood, and in the vicinity of Zuni. There is little evidence of increasing or decreasing trends for the Gray Vireo in New Mexico, although BBS data suggest that declines may be occurring in the northern part of the state. Gray Vireos breed in pinyon pine-Utah juniper woodlands, oneseed juniper savannas, mixed juniper- oak woodlands, and desert riparian communities. Gray Vireos typically nest in juniper trees, although other tree and shrub species are used. -

Teresa P. Palos, Ph.D. Sabbatical Semester: Fall 2016 Report: Behavioral Assessment of Six Common Bird Species at the Madrona Marsh Preserve, Torrance, CA Introduction For my sabbatical, I focused on birds and their behavior at a local preserve during the Fall 2016. The project was within my teaching discipline but focused on an area of biology that is not my strength. My educational preparation and teaching focus are within cellular and molecular biology, and microbiology. My research background is in experimental work at the lab bench. My organismic biology preparation is thus not strong; I have never carried out behavioral studies, nor have I participated in field work. The independent study allowed me to focus on these activities. The original proposal was to evaluate the consequences of the 2015/2016 El Niño on selected Madrona Marsh Preserve (MMP) bird species, but the expected heavy rains did not materialize. The alternate plan called for a comparative analysis of bird behavior from early-to-late fall. My sabbatical project consisted of two components. The first component involved taking an ornithology course through UCLA Extension that covered basic bird identification, behavior, and ecology. Field trips and field note preparation were integral components of the course. The Autumn Birds of Southern California description and transcript are attached at the end of this report. The second component focused on field work at the preserve. The study was purely observational. Various environmental parameters were measured to determine which, if any, influenced bird behavior. Permission to access the study locale was granted by Ms. Tracy Drake, Naturalist and Manager of the preserve. -

Langham September 9, 2018 Whenever someone asks if I get tired of leading Grand California, I laugh and say, "Picture San Francisco, Point Reyes National Seashore, Bodega Bay, the Sierra Nevada, Lake Tahoe, Mono Lake, the White Mountains, Yosemite National Park, Monterey and the Big Sur coastline. Now tell me you could ever get tired of the scenery, not to mention the array of possible birds, plants and other animals." Our endemic Yellow-billed Magpie is much more difficult to see due to decimation by the West Nile Virus, but we still always find some in the Sacramento area. This year our pelagic trip on Monterey Bay produced Humpback Whales, up to 3 Black-footed Albatrosses sitting on the water around our boat and, best of all, a juvenile Masked Booby. Here are some excerpts of this year’s tour taken from the daily journal I write and then mail to all participants after I get home. On our way to Bodega Head, we picked up three Black Oystercatchers and a dozen American White Pelicans. -
