Revised: May 5, 2015. Accepted: June 13, 2015 Abstract At the present time, art education is often ignored. Focus on teaching and learning at school seems to accentuate other subjects, such as: science, economics, and technology. This trend is becoming more concerning for the arts is a field of study, which draws attention to the development of perceptual sensitivity, creativity, as well as social responsibility. However, if art education, in this case is music education, is taught theoretically based on other cultural materials, then the consequences will be worse for students. This study is aimed to draw outlines of music education which hopefully can answer the three aspects of music which are previously described. No one tends offhand to associate gamelan with MIT. but there it is. Professor Evan Ziporyn has been directing the gong kebyar ensemble Gamelan Galak Tika at MIT since 1993, and I was an active member from 1994 until 1997. Unfortunately the pressure of my studies at Wesleyan has not allowed me to play with Galak Tika as much as I would like in the past few years. For the three years of my tenure with Galak Tika we were blessed with the artistry of the Balinese husband and wife team of I Nyoman Catra and Desak Made Suarti Laksmi. The magnificent teaching and performance prowess of Evan, Catra and Desak formed the basis of my introduction to gamelan music. In 1997 I came to Wesleyan University to study for the degree of Master of Arts in Music, of which this thesis is a part. Here at Wesleyan I have had the great honor of studying with I. M. Harjito and Sumarsam, two Javanese artists. I sincerely thank them for broadening my awareness of the multifaceted natures of Indonesian music and for sharing with me the great beauty of the central Javanese court gamelan. -

(1990). Although this system was proposed as early as 1972 it has been applied irregularly in writings on the arts, but we have chosen to adhere to it so as to reflect a closer relationship to actual Balinese aksara ‘letters of the alphabet, language’. For instance, many words with prefixes frequently spelled pe or peng are spelled here with the prefixes pa and pang. 1 Introduction These historic recordings were made in 1928 as part of a collection of the first and only commercially–released recordings of music made in Bali prior to World War II. This diverse sampling of new and older Balinese styles appeared on 78 rpm discs in 1929 with subsequent releases for international distribution. The records were sold worldwide (or not sold, as it happened) and quickly went out of print. It was a crucial time in the island’s musical history as Bali was in the midst of an artistic revolution with kebyar as the new dominant style of music. -

The Impact of the West Sumatran Regional Recording Industry on Minangkabau Oral Literature
Wacana, Vol. 12 No. 1 (April 2010): 35—69 The impact of the West Sumatran regional recording industry on Minangkabau oral literature SURYADI Abstract Due to the emergence of what in Indonesian is called industri rekaman daerah ‘Indonesian regional recording industries’, which has developed significantly since the 1980s, many regional recording companies have been established in Indonesia. As a consequence, more and more aspects of Indonesian regional culture have appeared in commercial recordings. Nowadays commercial cassettes and Video Compact Discs (VCDs) of regional pop and oral literature genres from different ethnic groups are being produced and distributed in provincial and regency towns, even those situated far from the Indonesian capital of Jakarta. Considering the extensive mediation and commodification of ethnic cultures in Indonesia, this paper investigates the impact of the rise of a regional recording industry on Minangkabau oral literature in West Sumatra. Focussing on recordings of some Minangkabau traditional verbal art genres on commercial cassettes and VCDs by West Sumatran recording companies, this paper attempts to examine the way in which Minangkabau traditional verbal art performers have engaged with electronic communication, and how this shapes technological and commercial conditions for ethnic art and performance in one modernizing society in regional Indonesia. Pesiat THE GAMELAN SAMAR PEGULINGAN FROM KETEWEL VILLAGE The Island of Bali, part of the vast archipelago of Islands that make up the nation of Indonesia, has long been famed for its highly developed traditions of music and dance. Of the many forms of gamelan that exist on the island (some 20 distinct kinds have been documented among more than 1500 active groups) certainly the most widely known is the Gamelan Gong Kebyar – literally, “to burst into flame” – is the brilliant and virtuosic style that developed in the early part of this century and continues to flourish, often overshadowing the older, more sacred styles. 1 However, some of the richest musical treasures on the island are found in these older ensembles. Together they represent the real core or wellspring of the Balinese musical tradition, upon which the new styles have drawn their substance and spirit. This recording presents music from one of the most beautiful of such ensemble-types, known as Gamelan Semar Pegulingan. It is the gamelan of Semara, the Balinese got of love. The music dedicated to Semara resonates with his image in Balinese mythology: the ultimate expression of manis (sweet) and halus (refined) qualities. Evolved in the now-faded feudal court system of Bali, the delicate music of the Gamelan Semar Pegulingan provided entertainment for the princely rajas and their guests. -

PERFORMING ARTS OF INDONESIA (PERFORMANCE EDUCATION AND ARCHIVE)1 BY I MADE BANDEM I. INTRODUCTION Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world. It consists of roughly 17,000 islands, 6,000 of which, covering 60% of its area size, are populated. As expressed in the caption of the coat of arms “Bhineka Tunggal Ika” (meaning Unity in Diversity), Indonesia has extremely diverse population, with different historical and socio-cultural backgrounds. There are probably over 400 ethnic groups found in the island with over 300 ethnic languages. Currently, the population of Indonesia is about 220 million people. As a nation, Indonesia is bound together by one common language, known as Bahasa Indonesia.2 Due to the historical and socio-cultural diversity within the population, each ethnic group of Indonesia has developed their own unique visual and performing arts. Presently, there are dozens of style and hundreds of form of performing arts, which most of them have been survived and inherited over generation after generation, while some of them are newly created. Even though, they have different stages of development, those performing arts still in existence simultaneously. Additionally, there are many evidence of cultural assimilation between the Indonesian culture with some foreign culture such as the cultural elements of India, China, Arabic countries, Portuguese and Western continents. Through adaptation, these foreign elements blended themselves with local cultures in which enrich the original cultures. As a result the Javanese and the Balinese Wayang Wong dance drama is quite different from the Kathakali of India, the Sumatranese and Rudat dances of Lombok are not found in Arabic countries, and Keroncong music of Indonesia is only similar to that of Portuguese music.
