  • Nursing in Alberta
of Service 'Ghe 1Cistor~ of .'nursing in Albert~ THE UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY LIBRARY j-{eritage of Service 'Ghe '}(isto11J of '11ursin3 in Alberta 'J-(eritage of Service 'Ghe j-HstorH of 'nursing in Alberta TONY CASHMAN Published by The Alberta Association of Registered Nurses Printed by Commercial Printers Limited Edmonton, Alberta Introduction This book has hundreds of authors, about six hundred I would think. If you can stand one more paraphrase of Mr. Churchill's resounding comment of 1940: Never in the history of Alberta has so much original research been done by so many. It started about the time of the Churchill remark. The Al berta Association of Registered Nurses was then gathering material for the book Three Centuries of Caruidian Nursing. Miss Birtles' diaries were brought to light at this time. Marion Moodie was prevailed upon to write her fascinating memoirs of Calgary General in the 1890's. So much material was gathered that Kate Shaw Brighty, then president of the AARN, engaged Eugenie Myles to put it together and it was mimeographed - they couldn't afford to print it - under the title A History of Nursing in Alberta. Margaret Fraser brought in some more things in the 1950's. The project was revived again in 1964 when local chapters of the AARN were asked to research the history of nursing in their own districts and the alumnae associations were asked to help retrace the progress of nursing education through the history of their own schools. Digging localized history is unsatisfying work. The results often seem trivial and disappointing and hardly worth the bother.

With hearts full of gratitude to God we celebrate at this time the fiftieth anniversary of our congregation. "For J ehovah is good : his lov:ng kindness endureth forever and His faithfulness unto all generations." God h ~ s prom il! ed that He is f ai thful, that His promise is sure and u nchanging unto all generation&. As we look back upon God's dealings with the early settlers, we see His f aithfulness. We are indebted to theEe pioneers who, with courage and loyalty, though facing hardships, pressed onward and forward to establish our church. In our generation with its great developments and changes, we t rust with thankful hearts on God's f aithfulness. What the future generation may be called upon to face, we do not know. God's f aithfulness is also their portion and promise. May the Christians in our co ngreg :1tion be awake, on fire for Him. These are harvest days for Jesus. He is coming soon. Let us be watchful in prayer and cons:ant in the use of God's Word. • EAST CENTRAL CONFERENCE DEAN's REPORT Grace to You And
EAST CENTRAL CONFERENCE DEAN’S REPORT Grace to you and peace from God, our Creator, Redeemer, and Sanctifier. The East Central Conference is pleased to welcome the West Central Conference to Camrose for the second Joint Conference Convention. We met at Good Shepherd Lutheran, Red Deer in 2013 for the first Joint Conference Convention. The members and congregations in our conference continue to struggle through the changes and challenges that go along with being a rural agricultural/oil and gas area. In spite of challenges with finances and declining membership, our congregations continue to serve with a heartfelt love for God, their communities, and their fellow members. They look forward with the hope that is ours through Jesus Christ. We are very aware that it is only through the grace of God that we continue to serve within the communities we are part of. Changes in the conference in the last year are as follows: 1. Rev. Jeff Decelle has resigned from Edberg, Edberg; Bethesda, New Norway; St. Peter, Bashaw; and Zion, Bashaw congregations to accept a call to Unity Lutheran, Medicine Hat. 2. Mrs. Bev Swanson, Diaconal Minister, has begun her second year of her two-year contract with Messiah. Rev. Vincent and Mrs. Mary Ellen Eriksson and Rev. Laverne and Mrs. Marilyn Hoveland are on the Pastoral Care team and visit in the care facilities in Camrose. 3. Rev. Prema Samuel has been serving as interim pastor for the Armena Parish (Scandia, Armena, and St. Joseph’s, Hay Lakes). 4. Rev. Kristian Wold resigned from Bethel Lutheran, Camrose to accept a call as second pastor at Hope Lutheran, Calgary.
