Laura Thompson, members of her staff, and members for the Dorothy Chandler staff walked through the timing of our Event from the Wine Reception to Dancing the Night Away. I was immediately impressed by the condition of the Pavilion and what a great venue for our Centennial Soiree it will be. The Pavilion has been maintained in top condition and belies its age. The location will be perfect for our visitors staying in the downtown hotels, and as a memory of the splendor of Los Angeles. The Wine Reception will be held on the West Wing of the Main Floor, a spacious area enlightened by many enormous chandeliers. The wine tasting will feature donated samplings from Michael Mondavi's firm, Folio, one of Oregon's premier pinot vineyards, Stoller, LA5 member Lee Black and his Black Family Winery and others. At the dinner hour we will be lead up the Grand Staircase to the large balcony that overlooks the fountain plaza through enormous windows. There will be two large screens to view the videos that each of the Centennial Clubs are producing for the Event. And following the dinner and the entertainment arranged by Laura, we will dance the night away with the band, Art Deco, well known to the staff of the Pavilion as high quality. In our communications with the other Centennial Clubs, San Francisco, Oakland, Seattle, Tacoma and Portland, there is a very real sense of excitement and anticipation for the Soiree. San Francisco has signed up 80 people to attend. Seattle has every Convention attendee from their Club also attending the Soiree. Portland is considering, even though they know the dress is business attire, to wear their tuxedos, as they consider this an extraordinarily special occasion. Indeed, it will be that. Rep. Richard Neal of Massachusetts has reintroduced WEP reform bill H.R. 2337 for the 2021-22 congressional session and as of April 2, there were already 139 House members supporting the bill. WEP has shortchanged affected retirees’ Social Security payments by upwards of $400 a month on average. It targets repeat offenders who have accumulated one or more “strike” offenses and mandates enhanced punishment upon conviction of any subsequent felony. Offenders convicted of a second strike receive double the usual sentence and offenders convicted of a third strike receive triple the usual sentence or a minimum sentence of 25 years-to-life. Unlike other mandatory sentencing laws, however, three-strikes gives prosecutors and judges the opportunity to bypass the law if it is “in the furtherance of justice.” In its evaluation of this use of discretion this study reveals that: • Discretion is used in a substantial portion of three-strike cases in California. Data from urban jurisdictions indicate that approximately 25-45% of eligible three-strike offenders will have a prior strike dismissed by either the prosecutor or the judge and thus will receive a corresponding sentence reduction.

    Page 1 Introduction! Hello, and welcome to the DSA-LA Electoral Politics committee’s voter guide to the elections on June 5, 2018. There’s a lot to vote for this year, so we decided to do the research on every contested race on the ballot so you could know who and what you’re voting for when you mark those little dots in the polling booth. Given the huge number of races pertinent to LA county, we decided to create a cheat sheet with our recommendations—many of which represent “lesser evil” calculations. Only Gayle McLaughlin for Lieutenant Governor and Steve Dunwoody for Assembly District 54 have been endorsed by DSA-LA as a whole, so please don’t take these suggestions as the recommendation of the entire chapter—these are just what a few dedicated DSA members in the Electoral Politics committee came up with after hours of researching the races through a pragmatic leftist lens. If you scroll down to a particular race, you’ll see that the information provided varies slightly between races—this was a long and communal effort, but we decided to share as much information as seemed useful for you to make a considered choice. Often, we omitted Republican or Libertarian candidates—if you’re reading this, we don’t imagine you’d vote for them anyway—and occasionally we limited our research to the candidates with a decent chance of winning.
