Pastor’s Corner Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, July 2, 2017 St. Cecilia’s Clergy Appointed by Bishop Vann Dear Faith Community of St. Cecilia, Welcoming to our new Priests! Bishop Kevin Vann was pleased to appoint me (2003) as the Pastor, and two new bilingual diocesan priests as the Parochial Vicars, effective July 1, 2017. Fr. Ismael Silva (1979) is coming from Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Santa Ana and Fr. Nicolaus Thai (2016) from the comple- tion of his master in theology at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome (aka the A ngeli- cum). This is his very first parish. Fr. Ismael is working with me and Maricela in administrating the Hispanic Ministry. Fr. Nicolaus is working with me to take charge of Adult Faith Formation and is also joining with the School Faculty to teach one religion class. We are the new team. I am grateful to God for entrusting me and my brother priests in this humble service. Please continue to keep us in your daily prayers as we continue to serve you as zealous and humble servants of God. I pray that our Lord Jesus Christ may grant all of us peace, joy, and wisdom as we are all journeying together in this new chapter of life. All are invited to join us in the Hall after the 9:00 am Mass today to welcome and support our two new Priests: Fr. Ismael and Fr. Nico- laus. Congratulations to our new Deacons! Deacon Gaston Arroyo and Deacon Aristotle Quan from our Church were ordained at Holy Family Cathedral on Saturday, June 24 at 10:00 am, by Bishop Kevin Vann. Thanks be to God for their Yes to serve. All are invited to join us in the Hall after 9:00 am and 12:30 pm Sunday Masses of Thanksgiving to congratulate and welcome both deacons on Sunday, July 16. What a beautiful 60th Anniversary celebration! I am deeply touched and grateful to all of you, I would like to repeat again “all of you,” for making our 60th Anniversary celebration remarkable by your tireless working and praying together. May the Lord bless us for the next 60 blessed years. Happy Birthday of Our Nation! This coming Tuesday, the Fourth of July, our nation will celebrate the Independence Day. First, we pause and be grateful to our Almighty God, the heavenly Father, for all the bless- ings that he has bestowed upon our great nation. Secondly, we express our thanks for the presidents and the people of our nation who have opened their hands and hearts to help the refugees and immigrants from all over the world. On this Independence Day, our parish will have a trilingual Mass at 9:00 am. All are invited to join, to give thanks and to celebrate. The musical play of the life of St. John the Baptist. Please support the upcoming fundraiser for our new two-story parish center. The wonderful musical shows are on Friday, July 14 and Saturday, July 15 both at 7 PM in the Church. Admission: $20 for Adults and $10 for Minors. You may purchase tickets at the box office door or after weekend Masses. All the proceeds go directly to our Restricted Building Fund. Please see pages 8 & 9. The theme of today’s readings is the work God gives us to do as the followers of Jesus: love God and our brothers and sisters through hospitality, generosity, commitment and charity. He earned a doctorate in canon law in 1985 from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas (Angelicum) in Rome. In the Springfield Diocese he served as associate pastor, pastor, and on the staff of the diocesan tribunal. In 2005, he was named coadjutor bishop of Fort Worth, Texas, to succeed Bishop Joseph Delaney, who died one day before Bishop-designate Vann was ordained bishop. Bishop Brown, a native of San Francisco, was ordained priest of the Diocese of Monterey-Fresno, California, in 1962. He was named bishop of Boise, Idaho in 1988, and Bishop of Orange in 1998. Mark 5:41 Page two 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time Pastor's corner Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On this 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time, the Gospel Reading contains the cure of two seriously ill individuals. The daughter of Jairus, the synagogue official, was at the point of death and a woman had been afflicted with hemorrhages for twelve years. Can you imagine how frantic and anxious this father felt? His beloved daughter was dying and everyone around him was telling him to get ready for her death. Was this the same synagogue official who had scolded Jesus for curing on the sabbath? (See Luke 13:10-17) If so, did he remember that Jesus had cured the woman who had been unable to stand erect for eighteen years? The synagogue official searched for Jesus, and when he found him, begged him to come cure his dying daughter. While on his way, a woman who had been hemorrhaging for twelve years pushed through the crowd around Jesus and touched his cloak. Her flow of blood dried up and she felt cured. Has that ever happened to you? You were sick for a long time but finally started feeling better? Did you feel relief, joy, and many other emotions? This woman, who was now cured, heard Jesus say, “Who touched my clothes?” She became fearful.

In 1967, he returned to his theological studies and was ordained a priest on December 13, 1969. Later that same year, he was elected superior of the Jesuit province of Argentina and Uruguay. Vann has been appointed the Ecclesiastical Delegate for the Pastoral Provision in the United States by Holy See, Washington, D.C. Cardinal Donald Wuerl announced Tuesday during the Fall meeting of the U.S. Conference of Catholic of Bishops in Baltimore. Bishop Vann is succeeding Newark Archbishop John J. Myers who has been the delegate since 2003. Bishop Vann assumes the office of delegate immediately. As the Ecclesiastical Delegate for the Pastoral Provision, Bishop Vann will be the Holy See’s delegate assisting former Anglican ministers who have been received into the Catholic Church and who wish to be ordained as Catholic priests. The Pastoral Provision has been in effect in the United States since 1980. This appointment is made by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Among the duties of the Ecclesiastical Delegate is to ensure the former Anglican ministers in formation receive thorough theological, spiritual and pastoral preparation for ordained ministry in the Catholic Church. Once formation is completed, the former Anglican minister becomes eligible to petition for Sacred Orders, which leads to the diaconate and priesthood. The Pastoral Provision is under the jurisdiction of the Holy See’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Between 1964 and 1965 he was a teacher of literature and psychology at Inmaculada High School in the province of Santa Fe, and in 1966 he taught the same courses at the prestigious Colegio del Salvador in Buenos Aires. In 1967, he returned to his theological studies and was ordained a priest on December 13, 1969. After his perpetual profession as a Jesuit in 1973, he became master of novices at the Seminary of Villa Barilari in San Miguel. Later that same year, he was elected superior of the Jesuit province of Argentina and Uruguay. In 1980, he returned to San Miguel as a teacher at the Jesuit school, a job rarely taken by a former provincial superior.

Page two The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ Pastor's corner Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, How shall I make a return to the Lord for all the good he has done for me? The cup of salvation I will take up, and I will call upon the name of the Lord. These verses are found in Psalm 116, which is today’s Responsorial Psalm. These are the verses I had on the holy card I gave out on June 14, 1980, the day of my ordination to the Priesthood. The next verses of the Psalm say it well: My vows to the Lord I will pay in the presence of all his people. The following day, June 15, I celebrated my First Mass here at St. Bonaventure. Again, the verses of this Psalm cry out: To you will I offer sacrifice of thanksgiving, and I will call upon the name of the Lord. After forty-one years, the verses of Psalm 116 are still at the heart of my vocation to the Priesthood. Today is the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (traditionally called Corpus Christi). Today we celebrate the greatest gift our Lord Jesus Christ gave us—the gift of himself. At the Last Supper, taking unleavened bread, Jesus pronounced the words, “Take this, all of you, and eat of it, for this is my Body, which will be given up for you.” Then taking the chalice of wine, he said, “Take this, all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my Blood, the Blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.
