ASCC News JUNE 2016 2 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Except for the few days where we received some very welcome rain, the run of very pleasant dry and mild days continues, great weather to get out and about in our cars. The first outing for May, on the 12th, the mid- week outing to the Iandra Castle near coincided with one those few showery days. On a very cool and drizzly Thursday morning, both Orange and Bathurst Groups came together at the Heritage Park in Blayney to continue the journey to Cowra for morning tea or coffee at the Rose Gardens Café. After the usual meeting and greeting and catching up with the news, it was soon time to journey on through the village of Greenethorpe to the castle. On arrival we were met by the manager and his wife who gave us a very informed overview of the history of the castle, from when a Mr Greene first purchased the property of 35,000 acres in 1878. The property was known as Mt. Oriel, and the Castle as the Mt. Oriel Homestead, with the district being Iandra. Following the outline of the property’s history, we were then free to wander through the buildings and surrounding gardens. Soon it was time for lunch, and being not such a nice day for a picnic lunch in the gardens, we were graciously granted the use on the Conservatory, where tea and coffee making urns were already bubbling away. I’m sure Peter will have more details of this outing elsewhere in the Newsletter. A few days later, on Sunday, 15th May, the Soar, Ride, and Shine Airshow was held at the Bathurst Airport, organised by Lifeline Central West as a fundraiser to allow that organisation to train additional councillors and expand its telephone counselling services. In addition to the Airshow, the day also included car and motorcycle displays, with over 300 vehicles on display. The ASCC was represented by at least 16 cars, with 13 in the group display and others interspersed with their other Clubs throughout the display. While we had not arranged to meet as a group, as we arrived we were directed to the designated parking area and managed to park most of our cars together as a group. After arranging the cars in the pre-marked and expansive parking spots, the tables and chairs were soon setup, and members were free to sit back and watch the Airshow or wander throughout the static displays of aircraft and vehicles. I know Mick will have a further report in the Newsletter so I will leave that to him. I was overwhelmed when Mick rang me in the evening to announce that the ASCC had been awarded the Club trophy; well done, and a sincere thank you Mick and members for your participation in making this possible. Overall, I think we all agreed it was a successful day, beautiful balmy weather and well organised for Lifeline’s first attempt. Lifeline Central West CEO Alex Ferguson has informed us that with the outstanding success of this year’s Airshow, they will now be having another one next year, and with more time for planning and areas of improvement identified from this year, it should be a show we can look forward to. June will be an event filled month for the Club, firstly the Mid-Week outing on Thursday, 9th June, when we will travel to the beautiful Wolgan Valley. More details are available in this Newsletter. This will be followed shortly afterwards with the Henry Lawson Festival in Grenfell on Sunday, 12th June, the Long Weekend. This has always been a popular event for members, and where we have been awarded the Best Represented Club Trophy for the past few years, so let us see what we can do again this year. The final June event on the following Sunday will be the Movie Day in Manildra, an annual event organised by the Parkes Antique Motor Club. I should imagine there will be more details in this Newsletter, however the usual arrangement is a BYO lunch in the park, lunch at the local Store/Café, and I’m not sure what the hotel offers nowadays, followed by the movie at the historic Amusu Theatre starting about 1.00 PM. Well, that’s about it for this edition, looking forward to seeing those who can make it to the Wolgan Valley or Grenfell. Smooth roads, and happy and safe motoring Charles Stammers

REPORTING ON RECENT ACTIVITIES

May, Thursday 12th - Visit Iandra Castle at Greenthorpe.

SOME INTERESTING FACTS RELATING TO IANDRA CASTLE (Report by Chris Olson)

Chris Olson enjoyed our recent Thursday outing to Iandra and he has provided me with some interesting facts courtesy of “The Iandra Story” - A Romance of Pioneering. 1. Wheat growing at Iandra commenced in the 1880s and the area under wheat progressively increased until a share farming system of wheat production was introduced in 1893. It was based on the recognition that the greatest assets in any enterprise are people who care, who value opportunities and use them diligently and fairly. George Greene, the owner of Iandra, provided the land ready to be ploughed, all the seed and two thirds of the fertiliser. The sharefarmer provided the plant and the labour. The resulting crop was shared equally between the two. This system created much interest and revolutionised the whole approach to wheat growing at Iandra. The then Minister of Lands, the Honourable J.H.Carruthers was among the visitors in 1896. During this visit he saw 9,500 acres under wheat and nearly 2,000 acres under lucerne. 2. Soon after 1900 rotational farming practices accompanied with experimentation with wheat varieties and the more extensive use of fertilisers resulted in 52 Iandra sharefarmers cropping 22,000 acres and delivering 100,000 bags of wheat (10,000 tonnes approximately) to the railhead. This was the first time that such a yield had been produced on one property and this in the days when wheat was harvested in four bushel bags. 3. In addition to this record production was the large amount retained for domestic and seed purposes and the enormous amount of hay cut and stored to feed the 700 working horses used at Iandra. The harvest was a concentration of labour forces on a scale not previously witnessed in rural NSW with 500 to 600 men engaged in various aspects of the operation. 4. In November 1910 an Agricultural Commission of Inquiry came to Iandra from Scotland in order to view at first hand the methods and policies being observed. So widespread had been the interest generated in Iandra activities that experts from across the world felt it fruitful to come and see for themselves. 5. The Massey Harris Machinery firm authorities selected Iandra to bring their first reaper thresher for its inaugural demonstration. With the widespread introduction of this machine, today known as a header, the whole process of grain harvesting was greatly accelerated. 6. George Greene was one of the first men in NSW to wire-net their holding against the marauding rabbit. At the height of the rabbit plague it was reported in The Sydney Morning Herald that there were no rabbits on Iandra. 7. Iandra Station had its own store, post office, well equipped offices, public school, church, Carpenter’s shop and blacksmith’s shop. In August 1908 Mr Greene planned and began constructing a village for his station employees which later came to bear his name, Greenethorpe. (Report by Peter Harper)

The Bathurst contingent left the Information Centre in reasonably fine conditions but by the time we climbed Fitzgeralds Mount the weather had closed in and it rained steadily all the way to Woodstock. Orange and Millthorpe members joined us at Blayney and a further group was waiting at the Cowra Rose Garden where we had morning tea. In all we had a total of thirty four people which was an excellent role up considering the weather. After morning tea Justin and Sue Armstrong lead the convey to Iandra in their recently acquired Porsche Cayman.

Just as we pulled up at Iandra the rain started again and the managers, Rod and Bev Kershaw, ushered us into the billiard room where we were given a very interesting talk on the history of the property and the building of house. We were then invited to inspect the house, stables and the gardens at our leisure. The statistics of the original farming enterprise were certainly impressive for the 1880s and 90s – 33000 acres, 100000 bags of wheat per year and 3-400 farm workers. As it was still raining at midday the managers suggested we have lunch in the conservatory and on the verandah. Overall it was a very interesting day. Those attending were: Alan Mitchell and Margaret Lee, Triumph TR4; Darryl and Helen Wilson, Mercedes 380SL; Richard and Marianne Gardoll, Volvo C70; Ian and Michelle Wallace, Mazda MX5; Stewart and Kerr Blowes, Nissan 300Z; Col and Evelyn Turner, Jaguar XK8; Chris and Merran Olson, Mazda MX5; Kerry and Narelle Farrelly, MGC; Brant and Brenda, MGCGT; Justin and Sue Armstrong, Porsche Cayman S; Bono and Sandra Marinovic, BMW Z3; Peter and Diann Harper, MGCGT; President Charles, modern; Peter Moras and Alan Evers, modern; Colin Bardill and Ralph Arnison, modern.  May, Sunday 15th - National Heritage Motoring Day (Report by Mick Buckler)

Although the day was advertised in the newsletter to support Bathurst Lifeline at their inaugural air car and bike show fundraiser, it was quite a disappointing turnout from our club. The day presented an excellent opportunity to get our cars out on the road and into the public eye that could have been better utilised. In spite of some misgivings about the organising of the event, those that attended were pleasantly surprised how well it all went right down to the organisers having traffic controllers on the highway to assist our departure at the conclusion. Over three hundred cars and bikes of a very high standard were presented and it would have been very hard to win an award, especially if you did not have a Ford or Holden with Bathurst as the host venue. The air show was incredible. Paul Bennet and his team of stunt flyers are just fantastic and must have nerves of steel. Imagine going up with them, I think it would be a one and only. The weather was good and all in all not a bad day out and to top it off our club won best club display award (and not a brown paper bag in sight). Members attending were: Peter Single and Casey Taylor, Bruce Lorimer, Alan Mitchell, Ginny and Jim Mather, Chris Olson, Paul and Karen Tomlinson, Ian Wallace ,Neil Barlow ,Gary and Anne Davis , Jeff Fry, Rodney Rossi, Colin and Evelyn Turner , Shirley and Mick Buckler. Several other members were in attendance but displaying their cars with other clubs.

 May, Sunday 15th - National Heritage Motoring Day

Whilst a group of members attended the Soar, Ride and Shine at the Bathurst airport, another small group of members elected to take their cars to the roads for National Motoring Heritage Day instead of being parked up in a paddock all day. The group of six cars met at 9.30 am at the Bathurst Information Centre before heading out to Chifley Dam picnic area for a BYO morning tear and a chatter. From there the group travelled back to Lagoon, across to O’Connell and down to Tarana. We then travelled back towards Brewongle along the opposite side of the river until meeting the Timber Ridge Road which took us to the junction with highway. After travelling back towards Bathurst we took the turn off at Glanmire Lane, taking us across to the Limekilns Road, then down to Pymonts Lane onto the Sofala Road at Peel. It was then a short run into Sofala and up the Hill End Road for a few kilometres to Tanwarra Lodge for lunch. As always happens on these outings, after a very pleasurable couple of hours it was time to head back, travelling through Turondale, Duramana, Eglington and into Bathurst. Most of the group broke up on entering Bathurst, however a few made it to Annie’s Icecream Shop before going home. Members attending were: Bono Marinovic and grandson Charlie, BMW Z3; Roy and Sheila Riley, Ford Capri; Kevin and Annette Neville, Ford Capri; Stew and Kerrie Blowes, Nissan 300Z; Peter and Diann Harper, MGA; Peter Moras, Austin Healey Sprite.

A NOTE FROM THE MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY Paul Hingston

BELOW IS AN EMAIL I GOT FROM A FRIEND AND HE HAS ASKED IF WE COULD SPREAD THE WORD

Hi Paul, just want to let you know of a book a friend of mine has written about building and racing an Appendix J Holden in 1962-3-4. This is the car and people I got involved with back then when I was 16-17 and left me addicted to motor racing and the machines. Spencer Martin originally drove the car and after David MacKay poached him, Barry Seton took over, which is when my association with him began. I get the odd mention in the book with a couple of recent photos. The book gets a bit of a mention on a couple of sites if you wish to investigate, the title being 'Legends of the 48-215' by Joel Wakely. Just Google that. For absolutely no reward I offered to spread the word and try and sell a few books for him, in order to recoup his costs of printing, so I have copies here in Orange which would save $5.50 postage. The book costs $34.95 and is selling well with Pitstop Books and Autopics. If you, or you wish to inform ASCC club members, want to buy a copy just give me an email or call and we shall organise a meeting. Anyone who was around in those days of Beechey, Weldon, Stahl, Jane, McPhee, and many others would love to read this as there is very little written on this era. I am not trying to force people to buy but simply inform them that it exists and if they were interested in those days, they would want to buy a copy. I am convalescing at home at the moment from a repeat operation on my ankle and am not aloud to walk on my left leg for 3 months, but can drive and buzz around home in my electric mobility chair, but on reaching a destination by car am sort of stuck when I get there. Hope you are well, and very busy I imagine organising our elections. I can give you or anyone a look a the book if you venture into Orange soon
