Massey’s William Faulkner: “Man Working” 1919-1962: A Catalogue of the William Faulkner Collection of the University of Virginia (Charlottesville: Bibliographic Society of the University of Virginia, 1968); and O. B. Emerson’s unpublished doctoral dissertation, “William Faulkner’s Literary Reputation in America” (Vanderbilt University, 1962). The present bibliography begins where Beebe’s latest checklist leaves off, but no precise termination date can be established since publica tion dates for periodicals vary widely, and it has seemed more useful to cover all possible material than to set an arbitrary cutoff date. -

WILLIAM FAULKNER I 89 7-19 62 Faulkner was born in New Albany, Mississippi, to a family that had once included wealthy and pow- erful people ruined by the Civil Var. His great- grandfather was a popular novelist, and this ancestor served, like other family members, as a model from whom Faulkner drew traits used in composing the characters in his fiction. He attended the Universiry of Mississippi in Oxford before and after his service in the Royal Canadian Air Force in World Var I. Thereafter, he lived in Oxford for most of his life, though he spent much time in Hollywood as a screenwriter. It was in New Orleans, though, that his literary career began' There he met Sherwood Anderson, who encour- aged him ro rurn from poetry to fiction and helped him get his first novel published. His lifetime's work, which eventually won Faulkner a Nobel Ptize in 1950, is largely a depiction of life in his fictional Yoknapatawpha County, an imaginative reconstruction of the area adlacent to Oxford. Faulkner was a Pas- sionately devoted hunter, and his love of the disappearing wilderness is expressed in many of his tales. He soughr our rhe honor and courage of people thwarted by circumstance, and the sum of his writing testifies to his faith that these virtues will prevail despite the corruptions of modern life. His major novels *ere irostly the product of a prodigious decade of creative effort. IOSR Journal of Humanities And Social Science (IOSR-JHSS) Volume 25, Issue 8, Series 5 (August. 2020) 36-39 e-ISSN: 2279-0837, p-ISSN: 2279-0845. www.iosrjournals.org Life is full of sound and fury, signifying nothing: An Ironic Representation of Faulkner’s “The Sound and the Fury” through Dilsey’s Fortitude Md Selim Akhtar Ph.D. Research Scholar, University Department of English, Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University, Malda, West Bengal, India, Abstract: Dilsey‟s faith and fidelity to the Compson household, her compassion for the idiot Benzy, her common concerns for all the children in that household, and her steadfast devotion to her employers win her our regard and admiration. She is the only one in the novel who acts positively and unselfishly, and who depends on Christian faith and love as a defense against sin and evil. Dilsey transcends chaos by her vision of Christian equilibrium and order. She also embodies much that the Compsons lack, especially a duty to her position as a servant and her total faith in God. In the final section of the novel, Faulkner greatly emphasized her role and gave her much attention and importance. For instances, the Easter Sunday service in the negro church is immensely moving, a glorification of simplicity, innocence, and love, with Dilsey and Benzy as the central figures. The other meaningful rite in which Dilsey participates is the birthday-cake of Benzy‟s 34th birthday which she has bought with her own money. Into this novel about selfish characters obsessed with time, the expressions of Dilsey‟s love and the Easter sermon introduce the dimension of eternity and the power of unselfish love. -

Anyway, I'm not a huge Three Famous Short Novels: Spotted Horses of Faulkner to begin with and none of these stories did much for me. She taught her sons to read before sending them to public school and exposed them to classics such as Charles Dickens and Grimms' Fairy Tales. It's just Old Man. He then fields questions from them. His first short story collection, These 13includes many of his most acclaimed and most frequently anthologized stories, including " A Rose for Emily ", " Red Leaves ", " That Evening Sun ", and " Dry September ". And this had to have some title and so that struck me as being a good title for it. Collected Stories. As I said, frustrated. No Preference. Faulkner's grandfather would also tell him of the exploits of William's great-grandfather and namesake, William Clark Falknerwho was a successful businessman, writer, Old Man Confederate hero. INTRODUCTION Among all the American writers in 1930's, Faulkner's achievement was so prominent that none of his contemporaries could compare with him. While any account of Faulkner's achievement as a whole must make some acknowledgement of his mastery of the short story form. And these short stories are important in his career of the successive volumes. "A Rose for Emily"(1930) is the first of Faulkner's short stories to be published and perhaps still the best-known. In it are examples of several of Faulkner's artistic preoccupations and techniques. He combines the conventional techniques and experimental devices to portray the character. II. WAYS TO PORTRAY THE CHARACTER Fiction writers have many ways to present character. The organization--brief telling followed by considerable showing--is common in fiction. The short story "A Rose for Emily" is a good example of this organization. -

Intertextuality has not been thoroughly dealt with in translation studies, even though it has been touched upon in various literary studies at least since the 1960s. The study analyzes cultural-religious intertextualities in William Faulkner’s novel Light in August (1932) and in its two Finnish translations, Kohtalokas veripisara (1945) and Liekehtivä elokuu (1968). The approach is interdisciplinary. The American South with its culture, religion, and literature, especially William Faulkner (1897–1962) and Light in August, are presented as necessary background information and an essential part of any nontrivial literary translation process. The study has a twofold main goal. On the one hand, the study aims at corroborating, by means of an examination of a set of empirical data, the view that adequate translations necessitate, on the part of the translator, a considerable amount of intertextual cultural competence in the field(s) the original source text deals with and that adequate translations thus cannot be secured by the translator’s technical or theoretical translation skills only. -

The VMP 1 Gilbert Youmans Department of English University of Missouri-Columbia Columbia, MO 65211 The Vocabulary-Management Profile: Two Stories by William Faulkner Abstract The Vocabulary-Management Profile (VMP) is a graph of the moving average of the number of new vocabulary words introduced over successive intervals of text. Peaks and valleys on the VMP correlate closely with narrative structure: new episodes, new settings, new characters are signaled by an increase in new vocabulary, and hence by upturns on the curve. Conversely, downturns in the VMP normally signal a continuation of the episode, description, or characterization. Higher-level boundaries in discourse (such as those between paragraphs and narrative episodes) normally correspond with deeper valleys on VMPs than do lower–level boundaries (such as those between clauses and sentences). Hence, VMPs provide surprisingly accurate graphical representations of the hierarchical structure of discourse. In general, the VMPs for "A Rose for Emily" and "Dry September" confirm this close correspondence between VMPs and narrative structure. However, VMPs are formally equivalent to unlabeled tree diagrams, and like such diagrams, they can provide only partial, not complete analogues for the structure of discourse. Most empirical studies of literature calculate statistics for entire texts or for groups of texts--the average length of sentences, the frequencies of words, phonemes, punctuation, and the like. Statistics such as these are often interesting and informative, but they reveal nothing about the constituent structure of discourse. By contrast, the Vocabulary–Management Profile (VMP), which was introduced for the first time in [1], provides a direct visual analogue for constituent structure: major valleys on the VMP normally occur near discourse boundaries--near divisions between paragraphs, episodes, and the like--and major peaks normally occur near the middle of paragraphs, episodes, and so on.
