It was his first short story published in a major magazine. A slightly revised version was published in two collections of his short fiction, These 13 (1931) and Collected Stories (1950). It has been published in dozens of anthologies as well. ''A Rose for Emily'' is the story of an eccentric spinster, Emily Grierson. An unnamed narrator details the strange circumstances of Emily's life and her odd relationships with her father, her lover, and the town of Jefferson, and the horrible secret she hides. -

FitzSimmons 2003 ABSTRACT This study examines four narrative techniques in William Faulkner’s fiction in order to accomplish two things: 1) see what applying contemporary narrative theory to Faulkner can tell us about his narratives; and 2) see how examining Faulkner’s narratives can cause us to revise or extend concepts in narrative theory. In other words, the study establishes a recursive relationship between Faulkner’s fiction and narrative theory, one in which each subject matter can illuminate the other. The four narrative techniques examined include shifts in focalization, shifts in voice, hypothetical narration, and representations of time. Each chapter examines background theory, gives examples of the technique, offers explication of the technique, and analyzes the technique’s effects. The first chapter takes “Barn Burning” as its main example and looks at how to identify shifts in focalization (vision), develops a model of layers of focalization, and investigates their effects. Chapter two focuses on As I Lay Dying and “Old Man” and examines narrative voice, works at defining voice, distinguishes conventional markers of narrative voice from voice features, and explores the effect of narrative voice. -

Go on and wonder”: Quentin’s Tragedy from the Sociological Perspective by Huang Min A major hero in the works of William Faulkner, Quentin Compson used to be one of the most frequently commented characters. Regarding his death, there are a variety of critical opinions. Yet very few critical works have devoted to a thorough study of Quentin’s tragedy. The result is that voices on this issue are presented within the different concerns of critics and tend to overstress one aspect of the problem. The diversified opinions contribute much to the unsettled argument and the complexity of Quentin’s death itself. For want of a better argument, the critical world has paid considerably less attention to Quentin’s suicide over the last 30 years. My dissertation has tried to approach Quentin’s tragedy in a more systematic and consistent way by the adaptation of a sociological perspective, which has seen the accumulation of well-defined studies on ii the problem of suicide since Sociologist Durkheim’s monumental book Suicides published well over a century ago. It is from this discipline of social science that the present paper gains a theoretical framework for laying down the fundamental questions regarding Quentin’s death, in an attempt to objectively define and examine the development of his character and suicidal mentality. -

Narrator as collective ‘we’: The narrative structure of “A Rose for Emily.” English Language & Literature Teaching, 17(4), 141-156. This study purposes to explore the narrative of fictional events complicated by a specific narrator, taking notice of his/her role as an internal focalizer as well as an external participant. In William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily," the story of an eccentric spinster, Emily Grierson, is focalized and narrated by a townsperson, apparently an individual, but one who always speaks as 'we.' This tale-teller, as a first-hand witness of the events in the story, details the strange circumstances of Emily’s life and her odd relationships with her father, her lover, the community, and even the horrible secret hidden to the climactic moment at the end. The narrative 'we' has surely watched Emily for many years with a considerable interest but also with a respectful distance. Being left unidentified on purpose, this narrative agent, in spite of his/her vagueness, definitely knows more than others do and acts undoubtedly as a pivotal role in this tale of grotesque love. Seamlessly juxtaposing the present and the past, the collective ‘we’ suggests an important subject that the distinction between the past and the present is blurred out for Emily, for whom the indiscernibleness of time flow proves to be her hamartia. The focalizer-narrator describes Miss Emily in the same manner as he/she describes the South whose old ways have passed on by time. -

Don’t Do It on My Carpet: The Humor of William Faulkner’s “Barn Burning” Ulf Kirchdorfer Darton State College Abstract: William Faulkner’s “Barn Burning” has been appreciated critically in just about every way but for its humor. While appreciations not concerned with humor are crucial to understanding the work, they can also be limiting. This discussion of Faulkner and humor in “Barn Burning” will acknowledge that humor stoops to low levels and crudity. But it also soars to great heights, with Faulkner’s command of the English language and ability to draw allusions effortlessly into the fabric of his story. Keywords: William Faulkner, humor, the South, “Barn Burning” There is no denying that William Faulkner’s “Barn Burning” is not perme- ated by a sense of tragedy and worse. If one focuses on the childhood of Sarty, who lives in an infernal parenting situation dominated by a mean- spirited, outrightly abusive father who is a pyromaniac, accompanied in strange concert by a loving but ineffectual mother with a bullying older brother, and two sisters who could be poster children for inertia, with a tag-along aunt, tears could flow from the reader and even anger could be expressed at the situation depicted. I would like to propose another reading of “Barn Burning,” in which any moisture from the tear ducts and surge of energy expended comes from readers responding to its humor.1 1 I wish to thank Mark Shackleton for his sympathetic reading of the manuscript-in-progress. WILLIAM FAULKNER I 89 7-19 62 Faulkner was born in New Albany, Mississippi, to a family that had once included wealthy and pow- erful people ruined by the Civil Var. His great- grandfather was a popular novelist, and this ancestor served, like other family members, as a model from whom Faulkner drew traits used in composing the characters in his fiction. He attended the Universiry of Mississippi in Oxford before and after his service in the Royal Canadian Air Force in World Var I. Thereafter, he lived in Oxford for most of his life, though he spent much time in Hollywood as a screenwriter. It was in New Orleans, though, that his literary career began' There he met Sherwood Anderson, who encour- aged him ro rurn from poetry to fiction and helped him get his first novel published. His lifetime's work, which eventually won Faulkner a Nobel Ptize in 1950, is largely a depiction of life in his fictional Yoknapatawpha County, an imaginative reconstruction of the area adlacent to Oxford. Faulkner was a Pas- sionately devoted hunter, and his love of the disappearing wilderness is expressed in many of his tales. He soughr our rhe honor and courage of people thwarted by circumstance, and the sum of his writing testifies to his faith that these virtues will prevail despite the corruptions of modern life. The boy, crouched on his nail keg at the back of the crowded room, knew he smelled cheese, and more: from where he sat he could see the ranked shelves close-packed with the solid, squat, dynamic shapes of tin cans whose labels his stomach read, not from the lettering which meant nothing to his mind but from the scarlet devils amid the silver curve of fish this, the cheese which he knew he smelled and the hermetic meat which his intestines believed he smelled coming in intermittent gusts momentary and brief between the other constant one, the smell and sense just a little of fear because mostly of despair and grief, the old fierce pull of blood. -

GAY FAULKNER: UNCOVERING A HOMOSEXUAL PRESENCE IN YOKNAPATAWPHA AND BEYOND A dissertation presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of English The University of Mississippi by PHILLIP ANDREW GORDON June 2013 Copyright Phillip Andrew Gordon 2013 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT This dissertation is a biographical study of William Faulkner (1897-1962) as his life coincided with a particular moment in LGBT history when the words homosexual and queer were undergoing profound changes and when our contemporary understanding of gay identity was becoming a widespread and recognizable epistemology. The connections forged in this study--based on archival research from Joseph Blotner’s extensive biographical notes--reveal a version of Faulkner distinctly not anxious about homosexuality and, in fact, often quite comfortable with gay men and living in gay environments (New Orleans, New York). From these connections, I reassess Faulkner’s pre-marriage writings (1918-1929) for their prolific reference to homosexual themes. -

Kalimantan 37, Jember 68121 e-mail: senandungtimur @gmail.com Abstrak Artikel ini membahas tentang ketidakterpenuhan cinta yang dialami tokoh utama dalam cerita pendek A Rose for Emily karya William Faulkner. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui arti cinta menurut persepsi tokoh utama, efek dari tidak terpenuhinya cinta yg dialami tokoh utama dan hubungan antara kehidupan pengarang sebagai pembuat karya sastra dengan karya sastranya yang berjudul A Rose for Emily. Kajian ini menggunakan teori Abraham H. Maslow tentang motivasi dan kepribadian bahwa seseorang akan terus berusaha dengan berbagai cara untuk memenuhi kebutuhan dan hasaratnya. Didukung dengan teori Sigmund Freud dengan Eros dn Thanatosnya bahwa dalam diri setiap manusia memiliki insting untuk hidup dan insting untuk mati. Hasil dari kajian ini menunjukan bahwa karakter Miss Emily menggambarkan seorang wanita yang menjadi stres setelah ayahnya meninggal dan menjadi semakin depresi setelah seorang bernama Baron yang begitu dicintainya ternyata adalah seorang laki-laki yang tidak berkomitmen pada sebuah pernikahan. Miss Emily menjadi berani setelah ayahnya meninggal, menujukkan betapa tangguhnya dia menjadi wanita mandiri hingga memiliki keberanian menjadi seorang pembunuh demi memenuhi keinginanya. Kepribadian mandiri yang kuat yang dimiliki oleh Miss Emily memiliki beberapa kesamaan dengan karakter dari ibu sang pengarang. Kata kunci: eros, pengarang, motivasi dan kepribadian, tokoh utama, thanatos.
