De literatuurstudie bij dit onderzoek toont aan dat dit onderwerp slechts beperkt aan bod kwam in eerder wetenschappelijk onderzoek. De resultaten van de verkennende analyses en de Poisson-regressiemodellen die in dit onderzoek ontwikkeld worden, leiden tot twee belangrijke conclusies. Het gebruik van oortjes blijkt geen meerwaarde te bieden bij het voorspellen van het gemiddeld aantal valpartijen per wedstrijd. Het jaar waarin een wedstrijd gereden wordt, de categorie van een wedstrijd, de lengte van het wedstrijdparcours, de gemiddelde snelheid van de winnaar, de hoeveelheid finishers, het aan- of afwezig zijn van kasseien, de hoeveelheid hellingen in het parcours en de kijkcijfers van de overeenkomstige tv-uitzending doen dat wel. Dit onderzoek is een aanzet tot verder onderzoek naar het ontstaan en de oorzaken van valpartijen tijdens een wielerwedstrijd. De ontwikkelde Poisson-regressiemodellen kunnen immers enkel een verband verduidelijken, maar hier geen verklaring voor bieden. PUTTING SHOULDER PADS ON SCHLECK: HOW THE BUSINESS OF PROFESSIONAL CYCLING COULD BE IMPROVED THROUGH A MORE AMERICAN STRUCTURE Chris Deubert* INTRODUCTION t was announced in August 2010 that three-time Tour de France I winner Alberto Contador, less than a week after his latest victory, was leaving his Kazakhstan-based team, Astana, at the end of the sea- son.1 Contador reportedly rejected a two-year, nearly $13 million deal from Astana,2 instead choosing to sign with Bjarne Riis’ Danish-based Saxo Bank-SunGard team for a reported two years and $20 million.3 The move was particularly notable because Contador was essentially replac- ing rider Andy Schleck, who announced that at the end of the 2010 sea- son he would be leaving Riis’ squad to form a team based in his native Luxembourg.4 Schleck finished second to Contador in both the 2009 and 2010 Tours de France, including a controversial thirty-nine second victo- 5 ry in 2010.

    INSIDE THE UCI/ASO CONFLICT ABOUT ORGANIZING CYCLING AS A SPORT: THE UNIBET CASE BENOIT HANSEZ INTRODUCTION Winner of the 2007 Tour de France, Alberto Contador, as well as his Astana teammates Levi Leipheimer, winner of the 2008 Tour of California and ranked third in the 2007 Tour de France, and Andreas Klöden, ranked second in the 2004 and 2006 Tours de France, have been denied participation in the 2008 Tour de France. This results from a decision of the Tour de France organizer, Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO), not to invite the cycling team Astana to the cycling races that it organizes in 2008, including the 2008 Tour de France. ASO’s decision is based on the damage caused by this team during the 2007 Tour de France and to cycling in general, both in 2006 and 2007.1 Prior to the start of the 2006 Tour de France, Astana was excluded from the Tour de France after five of its riders were implicated in a doping scandal. In the 2007 Tour de France, Astana pulled out of the Tour de France after its team leader Alexander Vinokourov tested positive for blood doping on July 24, 2007. Astana’s doping problem is a small piece of a long history of drugs scandals that have tarnished the credit of professional cycling over the last decade. Suffice to remember the highly media covered Festina affair in the 1998 Tour de France where the Festina physician Willy Voet was caught by border officials with large quantities of doping products in his Festina team car, and several members of the team, including the 1997 World Champion Laurent Brochard, were arrested and admitted to taking erythropoietin (EPO).2 Suffice also to cite the name of the famous Spanish doping case, Operación Puerto, against Dr.

Lloyd Freeburn In 2005, significant reforms were introduced in professional road cycling by the sport’s governing body, the “UCI”. Those reforms are now threatened by an entrenched dispute between the UCI and the owners of the sports’ most prestigious races. The outcome of the dispute, while uncertain, will be influenced by the legal structures and characters of the bodies involved. These structures and the issues raised by the conflict, including the implications of European Community competition law, are examined. It is argued that despite some defects in its democratic structure, the role of the UCI as the governing body of the sport gives its position greater legitimacy than that of the private owners of cycling races. Introduction In 2005, the “UCI ProTour” began as a unified calendar of cycling road races established by cycling’s governing body, the International Cycling Union. 1 For those familiar with the structure of other sports, this reform may seem modest and unremarkable. Nevertheless, since its inception, the ProTour has been locked in controversy. What may be a “life or death” struggle has ensued between the UCI and the organisers of a number of events, including the sport’s premier race, the “Tour de France”, and the two other “Grand Tour” races, the “Giro d’Italia” and the “Vuelta a Espana”. The Grand Tour organisers are resisting losing control of their events to a wider competition and what they see as a takeover by the ProTour.

Using this development as the case study setting, this paper seeks to illustrate stakeholder theory and network theory at work in a changing environment. Drawing on a series of semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders, complemented by analysis of publicly available information, this study explores how the process of change has affected the professional road cycling network, the interaction between its stakeholders and the balance of power among those stakeholders. While commercialism has a long history in professional road cycling, the paper concludes that the change process has been driven by a wish for commercial deepening within the network and of a desire to challenge some of the well-established relationships and dependencies that have existed therein. 2 Introduction In 2005, the world governing body of cycling, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) replaced its World Series of professional road cycling race events with a new competition - the UCI Pro Tour.
