There will be a parallelseasonofsymphonicmusicwitheightconcerts,amongwhichwillbeanoperainconcert form.Thisseasonisoneofthemostprolificintermsofproduction,reachingalevelofalmostone hundred performances, divided between operas, concerts, dance evenings and numerous special eventsintendedforanaudienceofyoungpeople.Our program includes titles from the classical operaticrepertoireaswellasrarerpieces,oneofwhichwillbestagedforthefirsttimeinPalermo. Theinaugurationwilltakeplaceonthe23 rd ofJanuarywithRichardWagner’s Lohengrin (Jan.24 Feb. 1). This opera has not been performed in Palermo for over 40 years. Curiously enough Lohengrin,traditionallyperformedinItalianinourcountry,wasperformedinGermanforthefirst timeinPalermoin1939.ItshouldbeaddedthatPalermowasacitywhichheldaspecialinterestfor RichardWagner:hespentlongperiodsoftimeinourcityandcomposedsomeofthemostfamous passagesofParsifalwhilelivingatGrandHotelet des Palmes, just around the corner from the Teatro Massimo. This new edition, coproduced with the Teatro Carlo Felice of Genua will be stagedbyHugodeAna,oneofthemostimportantdirectors/designersworkinginoperatoday.This willbean“Italianate”productionfromthevisualaswellasthevocalpointofview.Allmembersof the cast have a background in the Italian repertoire and Hugo de Ana will give us a romantic interpretationofWagner’smasterpiece.Theconductor,StefanSoltesz,isarenownedinterpreterof the romanticGerman repertoire. Thecast includesZoran Todorovich, Martina Serafin, Marianne Cornetti,SergeiLeiferkus. OursecondproductionwillbeFrancescoCilea’smost wellknown opera, Adriana Lecouvreur (Feb.21March1).Thisopera,vehicleinthepast of famous soprano prime donne – Magda Olivero,RainaKabaivanska,MirellaFreni,RenataScotto–willseethecelebratedItaliansoprano DanielaDessìinthetitlerole.Cilea,likeWagner,hadapersonaltiewithPalermo,wherehewas director of the city conservatoire. Alongside Mrs. Dessì will be Fabio Armiliato in the role of MaurizioandIldikoKomlosiastheprincessofBouillon.DonatoRenzettiwillconduct. Oneofourgoalsinrecentyearshasbeentobuildinterestintwentiethcenturyopera.Followingthe exampleof“KrolRoge”r(Szymanowski),“TheRake’sProgress”(Strawinsky),“FromtheHouse oftheDead”(Janáček),in2009wewillpresentErichKorngold’smasterpiece Die tote Stadt (April 1623),initsfirsteverperformanceinPalermo.ThisproductionwillbecoproducedwithTeatro

La Feniceinwhatpromises to be astimulatingand elegantly dreamy production by the Italian masterPierluigiPizzi.WillHumburg,notedspecialistinthetwentiethcenturyrepertoire,willlead theorchestrawhilethecastiscomprisedofthree of today’s most outstandingvocal artists:John Treleaven,NicolaBellerCarbone,AlexandruAgache. Acastofyoungfreshtalentedartistswillspearheadourproductionof Così fan tutte (June10– 17).MariaLuigiaBorsiandLauraGiordano,bothseeninrecentyearsattheSalzburgFestivalwill singalongsideotherbrightprospectssuchasCelsoAbelo,VincenzoTaorminaandElenaZhidkova. The production will be staged by Marco Gandini, former assistant of Franco Zeffirelli. The orchestrawillbeconductedbyHubertSoudant,oneoftoday’sleadingMozartspecialists. Following the success of our recent tour in Japan, the Teatro Massimo embarks on another adventure bringing two of its most prestigious productions to the renowned opera festival in Savonlinna, Finland (Jul. 28 Aug.1). Here, the Teatro Massimo with its orchestra, chorus, technicians and cast of internationally acclaimed soloists will perform Cavalleria Rusticana/ and .AsinthecaseofourtourinJapan(“VespriSiciliani”and “Cavalleria”), Teatro Massimo will bring two “ related” masterpieces to Finland. One of ’s leading young conductors, Paolo Arrivabeni, will be on the podium for Cav/Pag while FriedrichHaider,notedbelcantospecialistwillconduct“IPuritani”.InBellini’smasterpiece,the roleofElvirawillbesungbyDésiréeRancatore,ayoungandbeautifulSiciliansopranowhohas recentlybecomeaninternationalstar. AftertheSummerbreak,productionresumesattheendofSeptemberwithoneofPuccini’smost loved operas, Madama Butterfly (Sept.19 27).RenownedChinesesopranoHuiHe, recently acclaimed“Tosca”withLorinMaazelinNewYork,will sing the lead role of Ciociosan. The production, greeted with considerable success at the New National Theatre of Tokyo in 2002, comes from the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki. The production is by Lorenzo Mariani, director, and Maurizio Balò, designer, the same team responsible for the “Cav/Pag”. Conductor GabrieleFerro. No Italian opera house can present a season without including works by Giuseppe Verdi. The Teatro Massimo2009 programming concludeswiththe extremely popular (Nov.22 Dec.2)andthelessrepresentedbutnolessadmirable Simon Boccanegra (Oct.2329).Thecastof “Rigoletto”isledbyLeoNucci,unrivalledstarinthisrole.RobertoAronicaandNorahAmsellem complete the trio of protagonists. KeriLynn Wilson will conduct the historic production by PierluigiSamaritanifromtheFestivalVerdiinParma.. No less impressive is the vocal lineup which highlights the “Simon Boccanegra”, immediately preceding“Rigoletto”.AlongsideRobertoFrontaliinthetitlerole,thecastincludesAmarilliNizza asAmelia,andWalterFraccaro.FerruccioFurlanetto,triumphantprotagonistofourinternationally acclaimed“”,returnstoPalermotosingtheroleofFiesco.CoproducedbytheTeatro Comunale di Bologna, this Simon Boccanegra is staged by one of Italy’s most talented young directors, Giorgio Gallione. Philippe Auguin, well known to Covent Garden audiences, will conduct. Inadditiontooperas,TeatroMassimopresentstwogreatfavouritesofourdanceaudience,onein Springtimeandoneattheendoftheyear.Asinpastseasonsoneofthetwoproductionsisanew creation.Thisyear,ourballetdirector,LucianoCannito,willstageandchoreographanewversion ofProkofiev’sclassic Romeo and Juliet (May1521).Inordertoaddadashofcontemporary

flavour to this traditional love story we have asked the young fashion designer, Alessandra Facchinetti,tocreatethecostumes.EleonoraAbbagnato,PalermobornétoileoftheOpérade, willdancetheroleofJuliet. At Xmas time our dance production will shift repertoire to present the classical Russian masterpiece, The Sleeping Beauty ( Dec.1723) .IrinaKolpakova,historicinterpreterofthisrole, will faithfully reproduce the original version created for the Kirov in St. Petersburg in l890 by MariusPetipa. Our2009symphonicseasonoffersarichvarietyofprogramsrangingfromclassicalrepertoireto innovativecrossoverperformances.Thelistofgreatconductorswillinclude , Jurij Temirkanov , James Conlon andsir Jeffrey Tate ;thefirsttwowillcomewithvisitingorchestras (Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and St. Petersburg Philharmonic), while the latter two will make theirdebutwiththeOrchestraoftheTeatroMassimo.Threepopularandprestigiousartistswhose backgroundsareinother genres willperformwithourorchestrasinprogramswhichwillcertainly attractanewkindofaudiencetoourtheatre. Noa, Elio and Giovanni Allevi havealargefollowing amongtheyoungeraudiencesinItalytodayduetotheirabilitytomixandminglestylesandsounds fromdifferentmusicalschoolsandexperiences. Lastbutnotleastourconcertseasonfeaturesthespecialguestappearanceof ,who will sing, for the first time, the role of Faust ( Mar. 22 22) inaconcertversion ofGounod’s masterpiece.TheeveningwillbeconductedbyaspecialistoftheFrenchrepertoire,MichelPlasson andthecastincludesRobertoScandiuzzieAlexiaVolgaridou. OneoftheproudestachievementoftheTeatroMassimoinrecentyearshasbeenthehugepresence ofyoungstersinourtheatreforawidespreadvarietyofeventsandperformancesespeciallycreated forthem.Onceandforallletthenumbersspeakforthemselves:over40thousandboysandgirls havecrossedthethresholdoftheTeatroMassimo,settingfootinsideitanddiscoveringthebeauty andmagicofmusicaltheatre.Weconsideritanhistoricalresult.Andaveryrewardingone,too. Among the myriad of activities addressed to this very special target – conferences, workshops, visits, rehearsals, participation – we have staged a trilogy of pieces devoted to the great opera composers.
