In terms of local mass transit rail, the New York Subway system added the greatest number of annual riders since 2002 at 241.4 million, which represented a 17.1% rise in ridership over ten years. Hudson-Bergen Light Rail, however, had the most dramatic gains by percentage, growing 329% since 2002 and gaining over 10 million annual passengers.

INTRODUCTION This section describes the characteristics of the existing trans-Hudson public transportation system and summarizes changes in the trans-Hudson public transportation system under the 2030 No Build and 2030 Build Alternatives. Service levels and ridership are presented for the following modes: NJ TRANSIT commuter rail, Amtrak, bus, ferry, and PATH. B. EXISTING CONDITIONS The New York/New Jersey metropolitan region is afforded a variety of public transportation services crossing the Hudson River into midtown Manhattan, including NJ TRANSIT commuter rail, Amtrak, NJ TRANSIT and private express bus, ferry and Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH), as shown in Table 3.1-1. TABLE 3.1-1: EXISTING TRANS-HUDSON PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION SERVICES Public Transportation Mode/Facility Service Description NJ TRANSIT Main/Bergen/Port Jervis Runs from Suffern, NY to Hoboken, NJ. Main Line operates via Paterson, NJ. Bergen County Line operates via Fair Lawn, NJ. The two lines meet at Ridgewood, NJ. Service provided seven days per week. NJ TRANSIT runs service under contract with Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Metro-North Railroad from Port Jervis, NY to Hoboken, NJ. Voorhees Transportation Center Funded by: The J.C. Kellogg Foundation PURPOSE AND BACKGROUND This report, funded by a grant from the J.C. Kellogg Foundation, examines intercity rail travel to and from New Jersey and weighs its importance to the state’s citizens and economy. The analysis considers all Amtrak rail trips with one or both trip ends inside New Jersey; Clocker trips are excluded from the analysis.1 The report is the first of three funded by the J.C. Kellogg Foundation to examine Amtrak through the prism of New Jersey’s interests. The northeastern United States, from Washington, D.C., to Boston, contains the greatest concentration of commercial activity and residential development in the country. The Amtrak intercity passenger rail system serving this area, known as the Northeast Corridor, is unparalleled in the United States in terms of passenger volume and the frequency, speed, and quality of service. As a result, in no other region of the United States are such large concentrations of population and economic activity so heavily dependent on a single intercity rail corridor. At the heart of the Northeast Corridor is the state of New Jersey, the most densely populated state in the nation. The Northeast Corridor traverses the state from the Delaware River bridge in Trenton to the southwest, to the Hudson River tunnels into New York City to the northeast.
