KNEZ SMITHSONIAN CONTRIBUTIONS TO ANTHROPOLOGY • NUMBER 39 SERIES PUBLICATIONS OF THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION Emphasis upon publication as a means of "diffusing knowledge" was expressed by the first Secretary of the Smithsonian. In his formal plan for the institution, Joseph Henry outlined a program that included the following statement: "It is proposed to publish a series of reports, giving an account of the new discoveries in science, and of the changes made from year to year in all branches of knowledge." This theme of basic research has been adhered to through the years by thousands of titles issued in series publications under the Smithsonian imprint, commencing with Smithsonian Contributions to Knowledge in 1848 and continuing with the following active series: Smithsonian Contributions to Anthropology Smithsonian Contributions to Botany Smithsonian Contributions to the Earth Sciences Smithsonian Contributions to the Marine Sciences Smithsonian Contributions to Paleobiology Smithsonian Contributions to Zoology Smithsonian Folklife Studies Smithsonian Studies in Air and Space Smithsonian Studies in History and Technology In these series, the Institution publishes small papers and full-scale monographs that report the research and collections of its various museums and bureaux or of professional colleagues in the world of science and scholarship. The publications are distributed by mailing lists to libraries, universities, and similar institutions throughout the world. Papers or monographs submitted for series publication are received by the Smithsonian Institution Press, subject to its own review for format and style, only through departments of the various Smithsonian museums or bureaux, where the manuscripts are given substantive review.

  • Catholic Weddings
Salve Regina University Handbook and Policies for Catholic Weddings You must arrange for a priest or deacon to preside at your marriage, if you are able to arrange this, you may proceed to our handbook and policies Your Marriage is Holy The wedding you are now beginning to plan is, in the view of the Catholic Church, a significant religious event. Your wedding will engage your guests in celebrating your love as it is consecrated and sealed in the Rites of the Catholic Church. Before God’s altar, the priest or deacon, and the Church, you will pledge your love to each other in the bond of life-long fidelity. This is the beginning of your journey together through life in the Sacrament of Marriage. It is important from the very early stages of the wedding preparation to focus as much attention on the details of the wedding ceremony in our Chapel as on the other important aspects of your wedding day. Our Catholic Wedding Coordinator is available to assist you in preparing for your wedding. Your local priest or deacon, our Ceremony Coordinator, and your musicians will help make your wedding beautiful and meaningful. We will help you create a ceremony that will be joyful and dignified, and that will speak clearly to your guests of the religious nature of the wedding celebration. Our goal is to ensure that your wedding ceremony runs smoothly and to help you to prepare for the sacrament of marriage. Our Chapel is Sacred and it is our requirement that your ceremony be dignified.

As the 10th edition of ICAS is taking place in Asia, it will be greatly beneficial and intellectually challenging to invite Asia scholars to use this platform to discuss and exchange ideas on how we can better understand the changes that are happening in this region today. The conference is envisaged as an opportunity for participants to question the old paradigms and to search for new ones that can help us to analytically investigate the emerging economic, political and social order, as well as to conceive a realisation of the need for a new methodology to help us in better dealing with the problems of environment degradation, migration, authoritarianism, ethnic conflict, inequality, commoditisation of culture, and so forth.

  • Wedding and Marriage
WEDDING AND MARRIAGE A wedding is usually a very important event in someone's life. With marriage we show the world that we are in love and we want to spend the rest of our life with that person. In different countries people have different customs when it comes to weddings. In India for example a tradicional wedding is arranged. Arranged marriages are sometimes even better because you don't expect too much from your partner. A traditional Slovene and British wedding are quite alike but with some differences. In Britain and Slovenia you get married either in a church or a registy office. In the US people often get married in a house, garden or in a wedding chapel. There are special names for some people in the wedding ceremony. The woman who is getting married is called the bride and the man is called the bridegroom or groom. The man has a male friend with him called the best man and the bride has some female friends called the bridesmades. The bride is usually wearing a long white dress, a white veil and flowers in a bouquet. She is also supposed to wear something old, new, borrowed and blue. The groom wears a sout or a tuxedo, everyone else wears their best clothes. In traditional British wedding the groom is not supposed to see the bride on the day of the wedding until they meet in church. The groom arrives at the church first and waits inside, near the altar. Friends an families sit in rows in the church.

CHRISTIAN WEDDINGS: RELIGION AND RITUAL IN CONTEMPORARY JAPAN A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE DIVISION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAIʻI AT MĀNOA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS IN RELIGION (ASIAN) DECEMBER 2012 By Jesse R. LeFebvre Thesis Committee: Helen Baroni, Chairperson George J. Tanabe Christine Yano ii ABSTRACT This thesis explores the rise of Christian weddings within the context of contemporary Japan. In particular, it challenges the manner in which religion as an object of study is traditionally understood in an effort to reveal both the popularity and significance of Christian (and, more generally, religious) wedding ceremonies in a society where the vast number of members claim to be “non-religious” (mushūkyō). The author draws on numerous interviews with individuals both inside and outside the wedding industry to reveal the manner in which Japanese individuals with no proclaimed religious identity, affiliation or faith still vicariously rely on the religious. iii TABLE OF CONTENTS Abstract ……………………………………………………………………………………………….ii Chapter 1: Christian Weddings, Religion and “Non-religion”…………………..…………….1 Definitions of Religion and “Non-religion: Defining Religion and Exploring the Religious in Contemporary Japan ............................................................................... 2 “Non-religiousness” as Religion in Contemporary Japan ................................................ 6 Methodological Parameters ..............................................................................................

  • Weddings 7 Days a Week! Bring Your Marriage License with You
Ringgold Wedding Chapel Weddings 7 days a Week! Bring your marriage license with you. A marriage license must be obtained before Wedding Chapel can perform ceremony. Ringgold Wedding chapel will sign marriage license from other counties and a few other states. Our Wedding Chapel began as an Episcopal Methodist Church in 1845. During the Civil War, in the winter of 1863, it was destroyed by fire by Major General Sherman of the Union Army, in the battle of Ringgold Gap as he marched towards Atlanta. In 1925, the U.S. Government paid$600 that went toward rebuilding the church. The church moved to a larger facility in 1972. From 1972 until 1986, the building was used for storage. In 1986, Helen Boyd opened the wedding chapel in the old church building and joined many couples in marriage. Teresa James purchased the business in 2008. Since then, the Chapel has served not only the Southeast, but happy couples from all over the world. The Ringgold Wedding Chapel has been under new ownership and management since 2017, and they are excited about taking the chapel to the next level! This wedding chapel is the only wedding chapel that conducts wedding ceremonies seven days a week in the state of Georgia. Several counties in the state of Georgia will not offer "court house weddings", as a result about 70% of our brides travel one to two hours to get to our chapel. History + Charm + Southern Hospitality ❖Ringgold, GA is the Wedding Capital of the South. ❖The city of Ringgold Georgia has issued over 500,000 marriage licenses to this day.
