Bojan Jošt SOMENTOR: doc. dr. Tomaž Pavlin Avtor dela RECENZENT: BINE NORČIČ prof. dr. Janez Pustovrh Ljubljana, 2016 Hvala mentorju, prof. dr. Bojanu Joštu in somentorju, doc. dr. Ključne besede: smučarski skoki, Severna Amerika, zgodovina, razvoj, tekmovanja, dosežki, infrastruktura ZGODOVINSKI ORIS RAZVOJA SMUČARSKIH SKOKOV V AMERIKI IN KANADI Bine Norčič IZVLEČEK Smučarski skoki so v Sloveniji eden najpopularnejših športov. Key words: ski jumping, North America, history, evolution, competitions, results, infrastructure HISTORICAL OUTLINE OF SKI JUMPING DEVELOPMENT IN AMERICA AND CANADA Bine Norčič ABSTRACT One of the most popular sports in Slovenia is ski jumping. The superb results of our ski jumpers can be credited to the new construction of Nordic centre Planica and the large number of young jumpers that will guarantee outstanding performances for years to come. Ski Jumping is quite a bit different on the Western side of the Atlantic in North America. The lack of popularity from the spectators, media, and sponsors for ski jumping play an important and significant role in the successes of North American jumpers. If you take a look back at the history of ski jumping in North America, this was not always the case. Because of the migration of Norwegians to North America, the development of ski jumping began at the end of 19th century, which is the same time as most of the European countries (except Scandinavians and Norwegians). Ski jumping competitions at the beginning of the 20th century drew a remarkable number of spectators to the events. In 1937 a crowd of 60 thousand people were in attendance at a competition held in Chicago at the historical Soldier Field. The sport of ski jumping was so popular during this time that competitions were also organized in the other cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles. In the more recent years Americans and Canadians have been trying to raise the interest and popularity of ski jumping to a level at which they have been to in years past (the Americans have even won an Olympic medal). But it is still a long road ahead in order to make it to the top. Recently there have been better results in the International competitions, which shows that the system in place with the national teams and younger athletes can produce the best ski jumpers in the world. You Bet! Whether you live in a condominium or a single-family house, landscaping can certainly make your home easier to sell. But will attractive landscaping add value? It depends. Potted plants, freshly edged green lawn, and weed-free garden areas always make your home more attractive and appealing vis-a-vis the competition. Well-manicured landscaping helps frame other elements of curb appeal. Most buyers, however, will not necessarily pay extra for trees and lawn, flowers and shrubs. But you can almost always get a nice return on your investment in a well done deck or patio. Using plants, trees, patios, and other landscaping elements freely to make your home more appealing will help you sell it more quickly when the time is right.
