PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

Because of her, I was able to do my fieldwork in Brazil, and complete this document. I also want to thank our children Luis, Gabby, and Suelen for their patience and understanding when Filomena and I traveled to Brazil for three summers in a row. I want to thank my parents Maryann and Ronald, and family members for their love and support throughout this experience. Special thanks go to Larissa Rissatti for her helping arrange my interviews, assist in recording performances, and for creating files of my research on flash drives. To her mother Marcia Rigatti and grandparents, the late Luis and Mar Zé Rigatti, for putting my wife and me up in their home in Pouso Alegre while conducting research. I would especially like to acknowledge my sister-in-law Patricia Ventura-Zelnicker for her tireless encouragement, numerous readings of my rough drafts, and editorial help. Thank you also to my sister-in-laws Angela and Silvana for taking care of our kids while we were in Brazil. The genre, though, is just a form of popular music and many of the important volumes players in the game of promoting it were, like the saying goes, only Volume 6 / 2003-2004 in it for the money. As a rule, music like that will be supportive of Volume 5 / 2002-2003 the social order rather than inciting resistance against it. So, how Volume 4 / 2001-2002 did rock and roll acquire its rebellious image? Investigating this question from a sociological perspective, Leo D'Anjou here retells Volume 3 / 2000-2001 the story of the early beginnings of rock music. Volume 2 / 1999-2000 Volume 1 / 1998-1999 databases 1. The social construction of rock and roll. The rise of rock and roll in the 1950s coincides Alan W. Pollack's Notes On ... with the manifestation of youth as a new social category: the teenagers. At that time, this style Markus Heuger's Beabliography of popular music certainly did offer an appropriate articulation of their needs. This, however, Rare Pictures from Radio's Past does not explain why rock and roll did become identified with rebellion, or why young people Zeezender Discografie had to wait such a long time for their own music to arise. Talking about construction and signification, Leo D'Anjou here clears the ground to solve these riddles of rock and roll.
