PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

The trouble with many of us is that at the earlier stages of life we think we know everythingÑor to put it more usefully, we are often unaware of the scope and structure of our ignorance. Ignorance is not just a blank space on a personÕs mental map. It has contours and coherence, and for all I know rules of operation as well. ÑThomas Pynchon When you get right down to it, itÕs all sublime. That is, indescribable. You donÕt stop, though. You keep trying to describe it. Language games become a form of breathing. What you donÕt know can and will hurt you, but not as much as what you already know, which has already hurt you and will continue to bring you pain. This is also the ultimate cause of joy. To what extent is the unknown a function of memory, and to what extent fate? We are frontier-obsessive creatures.

Photo by Richard Strauss, Smithsonian Institution Rhythm and Blues 53 Tell It Like It Is by Mark Puryear In 1964 The Dixie Cups®, a female vocal trio from New Orleans, crooned out a cheerful version of “Chapel of Love” and knocked the Beatles from their number one spot on the pop charts. A year later, the trio released “Iko Iko,” a song first released in 1954 by James “Sugar Boy” Crawford as “Jock-A-Mo,” whose lyrics recount the meeting of two groups of Mardi Gras Indians. Since then, this song has been cov- ered by artists from the Grateful Dead to Cyndi Lauper, and continues to move new generations with its infectious New Orleans rhythms. The career of The Dixie Cups, and their direct and indirect roles in carrying rhythm and blues (R&B) into mainstream consciousness, speaks to the enduring pow- er of this music to transcend region and musical category and become a representative sound of the country. Musical Crossroads by Dwandalyn Reece The National Museum of African American History of musical genres, highlighting musical innovations, and Culture (NMAAHC) was established by an act of significant time periods and events along with Congress in 2003 making it the nineteenth museum historic performances to capture the music’s impact of the Smithsonian Institution.

Because of her, I was able to do my fieldwork in Brazil, and complete this document. I also want to thank our children Luis, Gabby, and Suelen for their patience and understanding when Filomena and I traveled to Brazil for three summers in a row. I want to thank my parents Maryann and Ronald, and family members for their love and support throughout this experience. Special thanks go to Larissa Rissatti for her helping arrange my interviews, assist in recording performances, and for creating files of my research on flash drives. To her mother Marcia Rigatti and grandparents, the late Luis and Mar Zé Rigatti, for putting my wife and me up in their home in Pouso Alegre while conducting research. I would especially like to acknowledge my sister-in-law Patricia Ventura-Zelnicker for her tireless encouragement, numerous readings of my rough drafts, and editorial help. Thank you also to my sister-in-laws Angela and Silvana for taking care of our kids while we were in Brazil.
