This dissertation addresses this question by examining the economic behavior of a stateless people, the Palestinians, over a hundred year period, from the last decades of Ottoman rule in the early 1900s to the present. Through this historical narrative, it investigates what happened to the financial and economic assets of ordinary Palestinians when they were either rendered stateless overnight (as happened in 1948) or when they suffered a gradual loss of sovereignty and control over their economic lives (as happened between the early 1900s to the 1930s, or again between 1967 and the present).

    61 ACTA NEOPHILOLOGICA UDK: 323.13(=411.16) DOI: 10.4312/an.53.1-2.61-81 Pursuing the Zionist Dream on the Palestinian Frontier: A Critical Approach to Herzl’s Altneuland Saddik Mohamed Gohar Abstract This paper critically examines Theodore Herzl’s canonical Zionist novel, Altneuland /Old New Land as a frontier narrative which depicts the process of Jewish immigration to Pal- estine as an inevitable historical process aiming to rescue European Jews from persecution and establish a multi-national Utopia on the land of Palestine. Unlike radical Zionist narratives which underlie the necessity of founding a purely Jewish state in the holy land, Altneuland depicts an egalitarian and cosmopolitan community shared by Jews, Arabs and other races. The paper emphasizes that Herzl’s Zionist project in Altneuland is not an extension of western colonialism par excellence. Herzl’s narrative is a pragmatic appropri- ation of frontier literature depicting Palestine as a new frontier and promoting a construct of mythology about enthusiastic individuals who thrived in the desert while serving the needs of an enterprising and progressive society. Unlike western colonial narratives which necessitate the elimination of the colonized natives, Herzl’s novel assimilates the indige- nous population in the emerging frontier community.     Fashion, History and Politics Adapted from the Hebrew by Galia Mandel Netta Students analyse how political leaders in the past used fashion to transmit political and moral values. This activity uses photographs of David Ben-Gurion and Menachem Begin. Students examine the differences between the two prime ministers and the influence of their respective clothing on their voters and the nation as a whole. Students vote on their preferred prime minister and have the option of creating their own poll comparing the fashion choices of Israeli prime ministers throughout history. In Israel, as in many places around the globe, new forms of segregation have emerged in recent years, as violence and the fear of violence become increasingly bound up with the production of social difference and exclusion. In Wadi Ara, a valley in the north of the country where my fieldwork was based, segregation between Jewish and Palestinian citizens has dramatically increased since the fall of 2000, as the place of Palestinians in a Jewish state is being reconfigured. In this dissertation I focus on the changing movements and interactions of Jewish Israelis in Wadi Ara as they articulate with changes in the ways difference, belonging, and citizenship are organized on a national scale. I examine how increased hostility, fear, and distrust have become spatialized; how narratives of the past shape contemporary geographies; how competing ways of interpreting and navigating the landscape are mediated; and how particular forms of encounter are framed. My central argument is that through daily linguistic and spatial practice people in Wadi Ara do more than just make sense of shifting boundaries; they bring these boundaries into being and, in the process, they enact both self‐definition and exclusion, reflecting and circumscribing ii the changing place of Palestinians in Israel.

And in each egg — Hush, don’t disturb!— There lies asleep a baby chick. I can still remember the gestures and expressions of the Yemenite kindergar- ten teacher as she acted out this lovely poem. We followed her in song, joyfully pronouncing the words with a guttural het and ‘ayin that came from deep in our throats since we had just arrived from Morocco and Arabic still rolled off our tongues. When the teacher told us about Bialik, it was clear to me that he was one of ours, a sort of grandfatherly fi gure producing poems for his many grandchil- dren. What can I say? It was love at fi rst sound. This was the fi rst poem I learned to recite and sing as a child in Israel. It was followed by this one: 1 The Hebrew texts of the poems and lectures by H.N.
