Ico Maly Abstract: This paper argues that nationalism, and nationalistic activism in particular are being globalized. At least certain fringes of radical nationalist activists are organized as ‘cellular systems’ connected and mobilize-able on a global scale giving birth to what I call ‘global nationalistic activism’. Given this change in nationalist activism, I claim that we should abandon all ‘methodological nationalism’. Methodological nationalism fails in arriving at a thorough understanding of the impact, scale and mobilization power (Tilly, 1974) of contemorary ‘national(istic)’ political activism. Even more, it inevitably will contribute to the naturalization or in emic terms the meta-political goals of global nationalist activists. The paradox is of course evident: global nationalism uses the scale- advantages, network effects and the benefits of cellular structures to fight for the (re)construction of the old 19th century vertebrate system par excellence: the (blood and soil) nation. Nevertheless, this, I will show, is an indisputable empirical reality: the many local nationalistic battles are more and more embedded in globally operating digital infrastructures mobilizing militants from all corners of the world for nationalist causes at home. Nationalist activism in the 21st century, so goes my argument, has important global dimensions which are easily repatriated for national use. -

It will question, amongst other themes, critiques of globalisation that present themselves as mere critiques of capitalist excess or capital’s ‘transnational’ form. This opens up the problem of the national/global antinomy as well as of responses that contain a nationalist or traditionalist element. The paper draws primarily on a critical discussion of the work of ‘European New Right’ philosopher Alain de Benoist. In de Benoist’s writings it detects an anti-political rejection of the political divide between left and right, which aligns it with contemporary neo-fascist opposition to the Eurozone crisis. The paper will reflect upon this alignment through a discussion of Marxist critical theory, putting forward the argument that capitalist processes must be understood as non-personal domination rather than as a system of individual greed or wilful exploitation. This should also open up the possibility to re-evaluate some of the recent progressive, yet largely populist, movement mobilisations directed at the crisis. -

Journal of Contemporary Religion, 20 (2) 2005: 195-215 1 ABSTRACT During the Weimar Republic, flourishing new religions were harnessed to usher in the cultural revolution from the right that was soon dominated by the Nazis. J. William Hauer’s Deutsche Glaubensbewegung, an umbrella group for numerous new religions from versions of Hinduism to Nordic Neo-Paganism, all collaborated, at some point, with Hitler and his party. This paper shows the continuity of core ideas from Mathilde Ludendorff’s Gotterkenntnis to Hauer’s Glaubensbewegung and, importantly, Sigrid Hunke’s Unitarier. It shows, further, the close connections between these forms of neo-paganism and the present day European New Right. The paradoxical co-occurrence in fascism of a religious populism and a metapolitical elitism, philosophical vitalism and dreams of national or European rebirth, has its roots in these French and German forms of neo-paganism. 2 Biographical Details: Karla Poewe is professor of anthropology in the Anthropology Department of the University of Calgary. She has published eight books, sometimes co-authored with Irving Hexham, among them, New Religions as Global Cultures (1997), Charismatic Christianity as a Global Culture (1994), Matrilineal Ideology (1981). Research was conducted in Zamibia, Namibia, South Africa and, for this paper, Germany. Irving Hexham is professor of Religious Studies at the University of Calgary. -

They link their philosophies back to historically conservative thinkers who have associations with fascism. I examine the continuing legacies of fascism in the ENR’s depiction of religion, political correctness in Germany, and multiculturalism and race. While advancing an anti-immigration agenda, these parties have been adamant to distance themselves from ‘right-wing extremism’. This article analyses a sample of tweets collected from the Twitter accounts of the German AfD, Identitarian Movement and the Autonomous Nationalists by employing frame analysis. We conclude that the frames of far-right actors classified as extremist, New Right, and populist in fact converge and we discuss our findings in the context of related case studies in other European countries. -

Past and Present Centre for Fascist, Anti-Fascist and Post-Fascist Studies Teesside University, 4-5 July 2013 Nigel Copsey Centre for Fascist, Anti-Fascist and Post-Fascist Studies, Teesside University [email protected] Abstract This international conference, organised by Teesside University in conjunction with the University of Cambridge (John Pollard), offered a variety of perspectives on leading fascist and far-right ideologues over the course of the twentieth (and into the twenty-first) century. Focusing upon the historical impact and contemporary influence of key far-right figures and intellectual trends (such as transnationalism and meta-politics), the conference brought together speakers over two days of academic discussion. The conference served several pur- poses: to examine the continuities and changes in fascist ideology; to present a report on the turn to online anti-Muslim hate by the contemporary far right in Britain; and to mark the for- mal launch of a new Centre for Fascist, Anti-Fascist and Post-Fascist Studies (CFAPS) based at Teesside University. He focused in particular on the instrumental role played by Baldur von Schirach (Head of Hitler Youth, and later Reich Governor of Vienna) as the exhibition’s patron. -

Abstract: The title of this paper is “Alain de Benoist: Neo-fascism with a human face?”. This title is purposefully provocative because it is my claim that the leader and “transnational messenger” of the French nouvelle droite (ND – New Right) seeks to create a neo-fascism that is suitable for anti-fascist and anti-imperialist times. That is, in contrast to neo-fascist political parties and extra-parliamentary violence, de Benoist and the ND chose the third path towards neo- fascism, which I call cultural or intellectual neo-fascism. I begin by explaining the meaning of the title of this paper. I then trace de Benoist’s intellectual evolution and impact since the 1960s. Using various definitions of fascism, I underscore why de Benoist is a neo-fascist. I conclude by exploring why it is difficult to fight a metapolitical movement such as the ND. Introduction Where Have All The Fascists Gone?,1 argues that post-war neo-fascists had three options after the defeat of Fascism and Nazism in 1945: 1) neo-fascist political parties; 2) extra- parliamentary terrorism; and 3) cultural or intellectual neo-fascism. While extra- parliamentary terrorism became discredited after the war due to the experiences of the Nazi brownshirts and Fascist blackshirts and sectors of the French revolutionary right had a disdain for political parties, the French nouvelle droite (ND – New Right) led by Alain de Benoist chose the strategy of cultural neo-fascism. -
Interview with Professor Tamir Bar-On Tamir Bar-On Is One of the World's
Interview with Professor Tamir Bar-On Tamir Bar-On is one of the world’s leading experts on the European New Right. He is the author of Where Have All the Fascists Gone? (2007) and Rethinking the French New Right: Alternatives to Modernity (2013) and is currently a professor of political science at Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education in Queretaro, Mexico, and a fellow at the Centre for the Analysis of the Radical Right. Note: Extensive interviews with Professor Bar-On were conducted by Benson Cheung, Political Capital's intern and student at the Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto, ON. The interviews were recorded in three sessions between August and October 2018. The following article is an abridged, condensed, and edited version of those sessions for the purposes of clarity, coherence, and readability. What is the European New Right, and what are some of their major ideological tenets? I would say that the European New Right is used interchangeably with an intellectual movement that’s called the French New Right, or the Nouvelle Droite. This intellectual movement emerged in 1968 in France. It was a group of forty intellectuals who created one of the major think tanks of the Nouvelle Droite called GRECE, which is Group for Research in the Studies of European Civilization. Their aim was essentially to rethink the sterile legacy of the right. 1968 (when they’re founded) is the heyday of the New Left and the major demonstrations in France, and so these New Right intellectuals seemed to have some envy for the New Left at the time.
