Museums Collecting Archaeology (England) REPORT YEAR 2: November 2017 Prepared by: Gail Boyle Nick Booth Anooshka Rawden 2 Museums Collecting Archaeology (England) REPORT YEAR 2: November 2017 © Historic England Museums Collecting Archaeology (England) Year 2 Report: November 2017 “There have been cuts across the Curatorial and Collections team reducing the team from 4 dedicated FTE plus 2 museum professionals with curatorial experience to just 2 (one entry level now with a years’ experience)… The resources available to curate archaeology archives is minimal and storage is off site at some distance (15 miles) from the museum with limited access. Shelving is full and archives are now stacking up on the floor due to a lack of storage space. There is also an accessioning backlog due to lack of curatorial resources.” Local Authority museum, West Midlands “At the time of writing we are about to enter a process to reduce costs by cutting staff - it is unknown how this might impact on the archaeology team… Since last year we have had to absorb a large number of archives being held by a decommissioned field unit which has reduced our     CDAS – Chairman’s Monthly Letter – March 2020 Fieldwork We still plan to do the geophysical survey at Fishbourne once the weather improves and the field starts to dry out. Coastal Monitoring Following the visit to Medmerry West in January we made a visit to Medmerry East. Recent storms had made a big change to the landscape. As on our last visit to the west side it was possible to walk across the breach at low tide. Some more of the Coastguard station has been exposed. However one corner has now disappeared. It was good that Hugh was able to create the 3D Model when he did. We found what looks like a large fish trap with two sets of posts running in a V shape, each arm being about 25 metres long. The woven hurdles were clearly visible. Peter Murphy took a sample of the timber in case there is an opportunity for radiocarbon dating. We plan to return to the site in March to draw and record the structure. When we have decided on a date for this work I will let Members know. Condition Assessment – Thorney Island The annual Condition Assessment of the WW2 sites on Thorney Island will be on Tuesday 10th March, meeting at 09:30 at the junction of Thorney Road and Thornham Lane (SU757049). Museum’s statement of purpose The Museum Service primarily serves those living in the Doncaster Metropolitan Borough area and those connected to the King‟s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry* and believes that its purpose can by summed up in four words : Engage, Preserve, Inspire, Communicate * The King‟s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry Museum has its own Collections Development Policy, but is included in the 2013-16 Forward Plan and therefore the Museum Service‟s statement of purpose. 2. An overview of current collections. Existing collections, including the subjects or themes and the periods of time and /or geographic areas to which the collections relate 2.0 At present (2012) the following collections have a member of staff with expertise in that particular field. Social History (including costume and photographs) Archaeology (Including Antiquities) World Cultures Fine and Decorative Arts Other collections are not supported by in-house expertise. For these we would actively look to recruit volunteers or honorary curators with knowledge relevant to these collections. We would also look to apply for grants to take on a temporary staff member to facilitate the curation of these collections. We would also look at accessing external expertise and working in partnership with other organisations and individuals.

All ceremony and drinks reception venues are available for a three hour period (including set-up), usually from 3-6pm, and the hire fee includes: Staff in period costume to meet and greet guests and the bridal party, and be on hand to provide additional historical information where appropriate Staff in period costume who can provide announcements and serve reception drinks and canapés, if required On arrival at the Museum’s Main Entrance, our replica car will transport the bridal party to your venue, while your guests will travel on one of our historic vehicles to the nearest tram stop Ceremony venue decoration in period style using seasonal greenery and flowers from the site All venues provide a memorable and stunning backdrop for photographs Free car parking The services of a designated event planner Georgian Landscape Pockerley Old Hall Set in a landscape reflecting the early 1800s, Pockerley Old Hall provides a superb venue for weddings and can accommodate up to 45 guests. Two rooms are licensed for ceremonies from 4.30pm - The Parlour which can hold up to 16 guests standing or 12 seated; and The Kitchen which can accommodate up to 45 guests standing. Drinks receptions can take place in Pockerley’s attractive gardens which feature plants from the era and command stunning views over the Georgian landscape.
