Renouncing the Le-: Working-class conserva7sm in France, 1930-1939 Joseph Starkey A Thesis submi+ed for the Degree of PhD at Cardiff University 2014 Abstract Histories of the working class in France have largely ignored the existence of working-class conservaGsm. This is parGcularly true of histories of the interwar period. Yet, there were an array of Catholic and right-wing groups during these years that endeavoured to bring workers within their orbit. Moreover, many workers judged that their interests were be+er served by these groups. This thesis explores the parGcipaGon of workers in Catholic and right-wing groups during the 1930s. What did these groups claim to offer workers within the wider context of their ideological goals? In which ways did conservaGve workers understand and express their interests, and why did they idenGfy the supposed ‘enemies of the leT’ as the best means of defending them? What was the daily experience of conservaGve workers like, and how did this experience contribute to the formaGon of ‘non-leT’ poliGcal idenGGes? These quesGons are addressed in a study of the largest Catholic and right-wing groups in France during the 1930s. This thesis argues that, during a period of leT-wing ascendancy, these groups made the recruitment of workers a top priority. To this end, they harnessed parGcular elements of mass poliGcal culture and adapted them to their own ideological ends. However, the ideology of these groups did not simply reflect the interests of the workers that supported them. This thesis argues that the interests of conservaGve workers were a raGonal and complex product of their own experience. -
Sydney Film Festival Announces Essential Scorsese
MEDIA RELEASE THURSDAY 31 MARCH 2016 DAVID STRATTON CURATES SCORSESE RETROSPECTIVE Sydney Film Festival, Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) and the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA) announce that David Stratton will present a program of 10 essential films directed by Martin Scorsese. The curated films will screen as the retrospective program during the 63rd Sydney Film Festival (8-19 June) and in Melbourne at ACMI (27 May-12 June) to coincide with ACMI’s exhibition SCORSESE (26 May-18 September). All 10 films will screen at the NFSA in Canberra (1-23 July) after Sydney Film Festival’s screenings. The retrospective program of ten titles, including specially imported 35mm prints, curated by David Stratton, entitled Essential Scorsese: Selected by David Stratton, features works by one of the most influential directors of our time, including Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Raging Bull and The Age of Innocence. The renowned critic and broadcaster, was appointed director of the Sydney Film Festival 50 years ago, and held the position from 1966 to 1983. Stratton will introduce selected screenings in the retrospective program. David Stratton says: “Scorsese talks in a rapid-fire style as though he doesn’t have enough time to describe everything he knows. He’s like a character in a 1930s movie. His films are passionate too. His best are explosive in their impact, crammed with information and detail. On the one hand, his Catholic upbringing leads him to tackle religious subjects (The Last Temptation of Christ, Kundun) while the Saturday matinee kid in him revels in the trashy gore of his gangster films.” Essential Scorsese: Selected by David Stratton will screen over two weekends during the Festival (8 – 19 June) at the Art Gallery of NSW. -

It is very simple and very plain, but in it are focused all the many- faceted analyses of the capitalist order. It is this: there is a striking contradiction between the increasingly social character of the process of production and the anti-social character of capitalist property. [. ] This contradiction between the anti-social character of [private] property and the social character of our production is the source of all anarchy and irrationality in capitalism.1 Isaac Deutscher n the Marxist tradition ‘dictatorship’ means domination and, just to confuse matters, it also carries with it the Irather more conventional political meaning that refers to a state of lawless and arbitrary rule by a tyrant or an association of tyrants. In the former rather than the latter sense Marxists have always thought of capitalist society as ‘the dictatorship of the bourgeoisie’. After all, capitalist society is founded upon the defence of private property against all comers, and the state and legal system is organized to ensure that the most favourable social and political conditions for the businessman and the entrepreneur prevail. The state guarantees the right of the owners of private capital to employ workers to generate profits in order to finance a new round of private investment, and so on. Irrespective of whether or not the state or political form of capitalist rule is oligarchic, dictatorial, or democratic, Marxists in the past, and today, regard the bourgeois domination of society as ‘dictatorial’. -

As such, it stirs up special consideration. Precisely, this paper is focused on tracing the road accomplished by the Communist Party of Albania from its foundation in 1941 to its derogation into the Labor Party of Albania in 1948. It deals with factors which determined its foundation, its role in the National Liberation movement, its legitimacy, its relations with the Communist Party of Yugoslavia and their implications upon Albanian people. Moreover, the analysis of relations with the Communist Party of Yugoslavia places a significant role in the history of the Communist Party of Albania given that it was founded and controlled through the Yugoslav emissaries in line with the goals, interests and policies of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia. Yet, the journey of the Communist Party of Albania cannot be considered detached from national and international situation, namely the other resistance groups, the influence of international factor, strategic importance and attention paid to this country in the context of the Second World War and evolution following the developments both at national and international level in the course of the war years and beyond. -

In general when we speak of "revisionism" in the Italian Communist Party (PCI) we usually refer to the question of whether the conquest of power is possible and of what strategy the Party puts forward in order to achieve it: the classical questions, in short, which were at the center of the first great revisionist debate in the Second International. Extensive comparisons have therefore been made between Italian "revisionism" and its classical antecedents. But first a brief review of the PCI's attitude toward the Italian Con- stitution may be illuminating. At a particularly signi icant moment in its recent history, the Eighth Congress of December 1956, the PCI approved the "Elements for a Policy Declaration" which regards the Italian Constitution that went into effect in January 1948, as an "important victory on the Italian road to Socialism," and illustrates one fundamental aspect of it in the follow- ing manner: As far as private property is concerned, it is guaranteed by law, 'with the aim of safeguarding its social function and making it accessible to all,' and it is precisely for this reason that the Constitution lays down limits for it and even provides for expro- priation, with compensation, for 'reasons of general interest.' It is not, therefore, unreasonable to state that the Republican Constitution . sets up some of the conditions which may, when they are put into effect . -

Welcome to the April Newsletter! With Minimum Manning and Easter fast approaching this newsletter is coming to you a little bit early! March has been a funny one with zones changing and children returning to Virtual School. Hopefully the warmer weather of April will bring a bit of light relief and the chance to get back out of our homes and into the wider community once again. We have the Virtual Spring Fayre competitions running for the beginning of the month which I hope that the whole con- tingent will get involved in, there’s something there for everyone. Also, with changes to EJSU regulations there is a big push for more volunteers for events and groups. Further details for all of this can be found further down the newsletter. I hope that everyone enjoys their leave over the Easter period and that the Easter Bunny is generous this year Take care and stay safe. Jaargang 2014, nr. 4b 1 Tekst en foto’s Ruud en Ina Metselaar – www.comomeerinfo.nl Actueel Nieuws mei 2014 Al jaren geleden heb ik eens gezegd dat er altijd als ik aan het meer ben wel een artikel over Mussolini in de krant staat. Tijdens onze vakantie in April werd mijn stelling weer eens overvloedig bevestigd: 6 artikelen in twee weken tijd. De stukken tonen iedere keer weer dat het oorlogsverleden nog lang niet is verwerkt. Dit keer ging het over twee verschillende onderwerpen, die ik hier kort samenvat. Het Verzetsmuseum in Dongo In Dongo is er al tientallen jaren een klein museum over het verzet in de laatste oorlogsjaren. Het is gevestigd in een kleine ruimte in het stadhuis. De discussie over het museum begon in februari van dit jaar toen het gemeentebestuur voorstelde om de naam van het museum, tot die tijd “Museo della Resistenza”, te vervangen door “Museo della fine della guerra – La Resistenza sul Lago di Como e la cattura di Mussolini”. De toevoeging “de gevangenneming van Mussolini” schoot onmiddellijk in het verkeerde keelgat van de vereniging van oud verzetsstrijders, de Anpi (Associazione Nationale Partigiani d’Italia). Ondanks de protesten nam de gemeenteraad het voorstel voor de naamsverandering met algemene stemmen aan. Het verzetsmuseum in Dongo Dongo Op 11 april stond in de krant La Provincia di Como de aankondiging van de opening van het museum, dat na verbouwing nu zeven zalen met multimedia apparatuur heeft. De dag daarop volgde een artikel waarin het dilemma voor velen nog eens werd besproken. Enerzijds de herinnering aan de onderdrukking in de laatste oorlogsjaren en de heroïsche strijd van de partizanen in de bergen aan het Alto Lago, een strijd die aan velen het leven kostte, anderzijds de dood van Mussolini die wel een einde aan deze trieste periode betekende, maar ook door een groep neofascisten wordt aangegrepen voor huldebetogingen aan hun leider.
