ANNUAL REVIEW Is to reduce youth re-offending through the delivery of a 7-step innovative programme focusing on those in prison, those at risk of going to prison and children caught up in knife crime.

You are all helping us to achieve this in so many ways. We have now completed 7 amazing years IF IT with extraordinary results, helping over 400 young men and up to 2000 children.

None of this would have happened without the invaluable support of our mentors, companies, funders, partners, trustees and the incredible team. Thank you to each and every WASN’T one of you, your support is invaluable.

WHAT IS A WORK TASTER? The 3-day work taster is part of the 7 step model and is probably the most important step to prepare young men for employment. Multiple work tasters were completed in London and the South West with a wide variety of companies from different sectors including Finance, TV and Media, the Construction Industry, IT, Hospitality and many others. Many of our young men were employed by the company following their work taster or having had that OUR experience were able to find employment in another industry. WORK TASTER STORIES Sean arrived on the Key4life At Risk programme in Bristol with a drug charge. He struggled with anger issues and had very low self-esteem and confidence. He engaged whole heartedly with the programme and is completely transformed. He attended several work tasters including with an estate agent and working with Cabot Circus. Sean is now a trainee manager with Bouygues, he says “I found the 7am start hard to get used to but I have loved the chance to learn about the different areas of construction. I want to use my brain and actually do something positive.” Nick Austen, Project Manager on the Bouygues Castle Point Development in Bristol says: “I’m so pleased with him, people stop and talk to him, he’s a popular MENTORSThis innovative and unique part of our programme is the cornerstone of the Key4Life model. Since the lad who just needed a second chance”. launch of Key4Life, over 300 mentors from all walks of life have given their time for free to help young men onto a positive path. This is often the first time that our men have had an active role model in their lives. Our mentors complete: Initial registration and assessment • Extensive training covering all key areas VERNEL Following a friend’s recommendation, Vernel • The matching process joined the At Risk programme in September 2019. • A 3-way mentor meeting with their young man and Key4life With a real passion to create change in his life, • On-going support meetings Vernel has been an incredible participant on the Here are just two insights: programme. He is intelligent and eager to learn more about how to become successful businessman. With an interest in film and TV and an idea that he wanted to pitch to a TV company which focussed “IT’S BEEN A RICHLY REWARDING PROCESS FOR ME, on changing the negative perceptions of ex-offenders, Vernel completed a 3 day work taster with a top CHALLENGING PREVIOUS WAYS OF THINKING AND CONNECTING TV production company Knicker Bocker Glory TV in December 2019. WHAT OUR NATIONAL PARTNERS DO? Companies play a central role in supporting Key4Life and the young men, whilst at the same time often developing the skills of their own staff too. The relationship can take on many forms as highlighted below:

KPMG is in its second year of a national partnership with Key4Life providing training for mentors and impact coaches. Its impact coaches have been invaluable delivering employability training in the prisons which the young men have found enormously beneficial in helping them into employment. ‘’THIS IS HANDS DOWN PROBABLY THE MOST ENGAGING TRAINING I’VE EXPERIENCED WITH KPMG!’’ St James has been a huge supporter and is one of our key corporate partners. The company has hosted two football KPMG employee events raising substantial sums to support our work and has also offered placements, along with permanent employment to one of our At Risk participants. ‘’THIS WAS AMAZING AND INSPIRING TO SAY THE LEAST!’’ KPMG employee ‘’THANK YOU SO MUCH! YOU’VE PROVIDED US WITH SO MUCH FOOD FOR THOUGHT. THANK YOU ALSO FOR EVERYTHING YOU’VE DONE FOR ALL THE YOUNG LIVES YOU’VE CHANGED As national partners of Key4life, these companies have given us extensive support, providing mentors, hosting our mentor FOR THE BETTER.’’ training workshops and support meetings as well as offering work placements and employment for many of our young men. OUR HIGHLIGHTS GALA EVENING AT GRAY’S INN In May we celebrated seven years of incredible achievements, supporting young men break the cycle of crime and gain sustained employment, with a very special fundraising evening hosted by Alex Beresford, ITV. Multiple Grammy-winning musical genius Nile Rodgers & Chic, lit up the stage in a special performance, playing feel-good classics like ‘We are Family’ and ‘Le Freak’. The event not only raised over £100k – crucial funds for our work, but also provided a platform for the official launch of the YOUNITED Flag Campaign. YOUNITED FLAG CAMPAIGN The YOUNITED flag campaign is a movement and a call to action to businesses of all sizes in the UK to offer employment to young people with an offending background. Companies who employ offenders will receive the YOUNITED flag kitemark. David Gauke, former Secretary of State for Justice and Lord Chancellor, added his weight to the campaign saying: “It’s a pleasure to support Key4Life and the YOUNITED campaign. I’m a firm believer in the power of work to change people’s lives. Work can provide dignity and purpose as well as the money to pay bills and support family life. Many employers already recognise that they can benefit from the skills and work ethic of people leaving prison. Through the YOUNITED campaign, I am sure those businesses will be joined by many more.” SECOND FOOD CELL – JACK WINTER’S LEG UP LEGACY Tore Andre Flo, the former Chelsea striker, launched our second food cell, Jack Winter’s Leg Up Legacy, at HMP Brixton on 22 September 2019. The ex-prison van was bought and fitted out with money raised by Jack’s friends and family, in memory of Jack. Both food cells serve the most delicious burgers made from locally sourced Somerset ingredients. Perfect for all events and with five-star hygiene ratings, Key4life’s young men also get an opportunity to gain vital skills whilst working on the van.
