  • The Ladybells Adenophora Liliifolia (L.) Besser in Forests Near Kisielany (Siedlce Upland, E Poland)
BRC Biodiv. Res. Conserv. 3-4: 324-328, 2006 www.brc.amu.edu.pl The ladybells Adenophora liliifolia (L.) Besser in forests near Kisielany (Siedlce Upland, E Poland) Marek T. Ciosek Department of Botany, Institute of Biology, University of Podlasie, B. Prusa 12, 08-110 Siedlce, Poland, e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: The ladybells Adenophora liliifolia in Poland was found in only 8 sites after 1980, so it is now classified as critically endangered (E). Since 2001 the species has been strictly protected and enlisted in the Habitat Directive of the EU. In 1995 in Kisielany, northwest of Siedlce, a rich population of Adenophora liliifolia was found. This study was undertaken to characterize phytosociologically the patches with ladybells and to analyse the structure of this population. One hundred specimens were randomly selected for population analysis carried out in 2005. Measurements were done on live plants. Seven individual traits were measured or calculated, including plant height, number of flowers, leaf dimensions, etc. The analysed patches represent thermophilous oak forest Potentillo albae-Qurcetum. This is the largest Polish population of this species known so far, as it consists of several hundred flowering specimens. Adenophora liliifolia achieves greatest dimensions there and its mean height exceeds the data known from the literature. Quantitative contribution of ladybells to particular patches varies from ì+î to ì2î according to the Braun-Blanquet scale. The plant is accompanied by some protected species, like: Laserpitium latifolium, Cimicifuga europaea, Aquilegia vulgaris and Lilium martagon. A proposal has been submitted to protect the site as a nature reserve and the population will be studied further.

A. DC. in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Poland, where this species has its European periphery distri- bution. We studied the population size, genetic variability, site conditions, and vegetation units in which A. liliifolia grows. Keywords: Recent and historical localities of A. liliifolia were ranked into six vegetation units of both forest and non-for- est character. A phytosociological survey showed differences in the species composition among localities. Only a weak pattern of population structure was observed (only 22% of total genetic variation present at the interpopulation level, AMOVA analysis), with moderate values for gene diversity (Hj = 0.141) and polymorphism (P = 27.6%). Neighbor- joining and Bayesian clusterings suggest a similar genetic background for most of the populations from Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Poland, contrary to the populations from Hungary, Romania, as well as two populations from Central and South Slovakia.

Genetic diversity within a newly identi- fied population of Adenophora liliifolia (L.) A.DC. in Romania: implications for conservation. Ann. For. Res. 58(2): 347-355. Abstract. Adenophora liliifolia is a relict plant species, endangered at Eu- ropean level. Its occurrence in Romania is limited to a very few sites. The amount of genetic diversity of plant species is a valuable indicator of popu- lation, being the baseline in developing proper strategies for their conserva- tion. Inter-simple sequence repeats (ISSRs) markers were used to analyze polymorphism in A. liliifolia genome and to evaluate the genetic diversity and accordingly, the state of a recently identified population. Five ISSR primers, specially designed for plants, and containing different simple se- quence repeat motifs were tested. A total of 52 ISSR fragments were gen- erated of which 41 were polymorphic (78.84%) and 32 (61.53%) specific to Adenophora genus. The value of Shannon’s index of genotypic diver- sity was 0.812. Jaccard similarity coefficient was calculated for pair wise comparisons among all individuals and ranged from 0.17 to 0.83. The ge- netic variability between individuals was 78.84% which suggests a rela- tive high genetic differentiation. Although the level of genetic variability is moderate to high, the population is declining and exposed to demographic stochasticity.

  • Cranmore Catalogue
NORTHERN IRELAND HERITAGE GARDENS TRUST OCCASIONAL PAPER, no. 8 (2016) A listing of plants cultivated between 1807 and 1825 by John Templeton (1766–1825) at Cranmore, Malone, Belfast E. Charles Nelson "Thoughtful, observant, enquiring, he reasoned out horticultural techniques for himself from what he knew about Ireland's native plants." Born in Belfast in 1766, John Templeton began to take an interest in gardening when he was about 20 years old "and soon made his flower-garden an object of attention". In 1793, according to his biographer, Templeton laid out an experimental garden in what was formerly an orchard and osiery. A stream was redirected to pass through the new garden; this probably formed the serpentine pond that survived long after John Templeton's death. A rock-garden was created. Into this place Templeton brought "from various parts of the world, rare and useful plants, which he endeavoured to naturalize in this climate". That is the nub of his pioneering horticulture. 1 He had his own methods for germinating seeds. "I never apply artificial heat", he wrote, "In sowing seeds I think great numbers are lost by sowing too deep". So he sowed his seeds on the surface of the soil: "Nature sows on the surface and leaves to chance the covering of them by leaves or Moss". Following this principle, John put a thick wad of chopped moss over freshly sown seeds; he knew that this would keep the soil in the pots moist even in summer ''all the watering that is necessary is just to keep the [soil] dark color'd" – while in winter the moss-blanket "prevented the plants from being affected with frost".

CAMPANULACEAE 桔梗科 jie geng ke Hong Deyuan (洪德元)1, Ge Song (葛颂)1; Thomas G. Lammers2, Laura L. Klein2 Herbs, lactiferous, perennial (often with rhizomes or caudices), less often annual, [or shrubs or trees outside of China]. Leaves estipulate, alternate (rarely opposite or whorled), simple, entire or variously toothed or dissected, petiolate or sessile. Flowers tet- racyclic, perfect, with a specialized method of proterandrous secondary pollen presentation, resupinate in Lobelioideae, solitary in an axillary or less often terminal position, or aggregated into terminal or axillary inflorescences that appear racemose or paniculate (rarely capitate), pedicellate or rarely sessile; bracts leaflike or reduced, rarely absent; pedicels often bracteolate. Calyx synsepalous, adnate to ovary and forming a hypanthium (free in Cyananthus); lobes (3–)5(–10), valvate, sometimes with a reflexed appendage in each sinus, in some Codonopsis, inserted well below rim of hypanthium. Corolla sympetalous, actinomorphic or zygomorphic, most often some shade of blue or violet, or white; lobes (4 or)5(–10), valvate. Stamens equaling number of corolla lobes, antisepalous, dis- tinct, coherent, or connate; anthers tetrasporangiate, dithecal, introrsely dehiscent by longitudinal slits, basifixed. Gynoecium syn- carpous, 2–5(–10)-locular with axile placentation, [rarely 1-locular with parietal, basal, or apical placentation outside of China]; ovary at least partly inferior (superior in Cyananthus), sometimes crowned by an annular or tubular nectary; style solitary, pubescent with pollen-collecting hairs below apex; stigma typically with as many lobes as ovary locules. Fruit a capsule, commonly apically loculicidal or laterally poricidal, or a berry. Seeds usually small, numerous; embryo small, straight; endosperm copious, oily or rarely starchy.
