He has allowed three or more goals in each outing, too, as the 26-year-old has yet to stand on his head and steal a game. He coughed up four goals on 26 shots Thursday against the Jets in Canada’s capital city. Hellebuyck is back on home ice for the first time since the season-opener against the Calgary Flames. He stopped 23 of the 26 shots he faced in that 4-3 overtime win, and he was the winning goalie in Thursday’s game at Ottawa, making 28 saves on 29 shots in the 4-1 victory. The JETS (-145) are a strong play on home ice, as they have won each of the first two meetings with the Senators. Winnipeg also won its only previous home game this season against Calgary. The Jets won’t cost you an arm and a leg, which is nice. RW Patrik Laine and C Jack Roslovic were reportedly dealt for Columbus Blue Jackets C Pierre-Luc Dubois Saturday, but they weren’t going to be in the lineup, anyway. The absences didn’t slow the Jets down in the previous two against the Sens. .

  • 2.0 Native Land Use - Historical Period
2.0 NATIVE LAND USE - HISTORICAL PERIOD The first French explorers arrived in the Red River valley during the early 1730s. Their travels and encounters with the aboriginal populations were recorded in diaries and plotted on maps, and with that, recorded history began for the region known now as the Lake Winnipeg and Red River basins. Native Movements Pierre Gaultier de Varennes et de La Vérendrye records that there were three distinct groups present in this region during the 1730s and 1740s: the Cree, the Assiniboine, and the Sioux. The Cree were largely occupying the boreal forest areas of what is now northern and central Manitoba. The Assiniboine were living and hunting along the parkland transitional zone, particularly the ‘lower’ Red River and Assiniboine River valleys. The Sioux lived on the open plains in the region of the upper Red River valley, and west of the Red River in upper reaches of the Mississippi water system. Approximately 75 years later, when the first contingent of Selkirk Settlers arrived in 1812, the Assiniboine had completely vacated eastern Manitoba and moved off to the west and southwest, allowing the Ojibwa, or Saulteaux, to move in from the Lake of the Woods and Lake Superior regions. Farther to the south in the United States, the Ojibwa or Chippewa also had migrated westward, and had settled in the Red Lake region of what is now north central Minnesota. By this time some of the Sioux had given up the wooded eastern portions of their territory and dwelt exclusively on the open prairie west of the Red and south of the Pembina River.

  • The Unique Case of Winnipeg
Prairie Perspectives 47 Provincial dominance: the unique case of Winnipeg William R. Horne, Brandon University Abstract: This paper identifies Winnipeg as a unique city within the Canadian urban system. While it is not among the largest cities in Canada, it dominates the province of Manitoba in a way that other capital cities and large cities do not. Statistical evidence for this domination is presented followed by historical reasons for its development. The economic and political effects on Manitoba are discussed. The city should not be discounted because of its decline in position at the national scale. Introduction When one thinks of the most powerful cities in Canada, Toronto, Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver quickly come to mind (McCann and Gunn 1998). At the provincial scale however, there is another city that appears to have more influence over its province than any other Canadian city. That city is Winnipeg. This paper will present evidence from the 2001 Census to support this claim. Four historical explanations for this situation will be argued. A review of provincial-municipal relationships across Canada will demonstrate the unique position of Winnipeg within Manitoba. The political structure of the province will further explain a number of actions taken by the provincial government to increase the economic and social importance of Winnipeg. Collectively, these factors give Winnipeg a unique position among Canadian cities. Much has been written about urban systems and the development of urban hierarchies. Stutz and Warf (2005) review two theories about the development of urban hierarchies. The central place model proposes that urban growth is related to the provision of services to a surrounding urban region.
