Langford & Ulting News Issue No. 23 Spring 2019 1924 Royal Enfield - Reunited after 70 years When Albert Parmenter left school at 15, one of his first thoughts on getting a job at V -reg in Maldon (situated in the field opposite Maldon Iron Works), was to buy himself a motorcycle. The late Peter Reeve said he had a 1924 Royal Enfield that he had been intending to turn into a lawnmower, and offered it to Albert at a cost of 30 shillings (£1.50 in today’s money!) – a whole week’s wages at that time. The only problem was that it was in pieces, and Albert would have to re-assemble it himself. Undaunted by this challenge, Albert put all the pieces into a wheelbarrow and took it home to Hol- loway Road, where he lived at the time with his parents. It took him almost two years to get his bike into working order, but his love and devotion paid off and his Royal Enfield became his pride and joy. However, time moves on, and Albert progressed to a more suitable vehicle, and the Royal Enfield was sold to Hadler’s Garage, of New Street, Chelmsford in May 1951. Hadlers was very well known for its motorcycle business as well as its cars in the early days. (1718-1799)] Reunited after 70 years (Contd/…) BBC Essex Quest - Ulting Philip said “the engine was stripped down, and it was found that the cast iron piston was cracked and distorted and the barrel badly worn.” But a devoted engineer is never one to give up. Philip did a lot of research to find replacement parts. He said “we considered making a new piston from aluminium but felt this would not be very original. By absolute chance we saw advertised a year later a brand-new original piston, rings and barrel on the internet, the very same model and size still wrapped in the original oil-proofed brown lubricated Villiers packaging and with a gudgeon pin [which connects the piston to the connecting rod and provides a bearing for the connecting rod to pivot upon as the piston moves]. Sold as old stock not required, we acquired this for peanuts!” Other parts needed updating and repairing BBC Essex runs a weekly Sunday morning radio and, when required, were made by hand. Philip said „treasure hunt‟ - the BBC Essex Quest. This involves “The most time-consuming problem was the Brown two of their presenters attempting to solve four clues to and Barlow carburation which had many brass parts four mystery locations in three hours, without maps – missing (I suppose in India highly polished brass but with help from the audience to solve clues and give directions. Their mission is to showcase Essex, and on material was worth a few bob!) Unfortunately, no parts th or copies existed, so from photographs and drawings Sunday 14 October their route ended at Ulting. As the hand made parts were guessed at and corrected until Local History Recorder for Langford and Ulting, I was we got it right, and we made an electric starter for the asked to take part in this, and was delighted to do so machine for testing purposes.” The original logbook (although somewhat daunted as you know I am a had been lost over time, so a duplicate log book was Langford rather than an Ulting girl and was terrified obtained dating from 20th July 1950 which gave a that I‟d get things wrong!) It was arranged that I would Frank Ivan Daughtry, of Westor, Spital Road, Maldon meet Liana Bridges and Barry Lewis, the two as its first owner, and then Albert Parmenter, then presenters, at Ulting Church and print out and take Hadler‟s Garage, then Philip Magness. with me a message that they had to read out. The BBC Philip, who had moved into Red Lodge, Langford in van should have arrived between 11.30 and 11.50, and 2014, had a great friend, Trevor Parmenter, and he I was to receive a call telling me when they would be asked if the Albert Parmenter named in the logbook with me, but as I had heard nothing I left my car in the was any relation, but sadly he was not.

39177 Newsletter Issue 11_- 02/03/2015 10:53 Page 1 Newsletter Vol. 4 No. 2 – Winter 2015 Langford Village from the air Sometimes you can only appreciate the beauty of an area from above. Shapes of buildings not normally seen from ground level gain proportion when viewed from this height. This picture of Langford’s Conservation Area was taken from a Cessna, before the extensions and additions to the Village Hall were built, but it encapsulates the area well. Although many houses have been built or altered since the original settlement began, the basic layout remains the same – a linear formation along established roads with an abundance of trees and open green spaces. According to the Rev. Philip Morant (1700-1770) the historian of Essex, the parish of Langford: ‘...lies along the side of the River Pant or Blackwater, and the Long Ford here is what occasioned the name. Lang in Saxon is the same as long.’ It is otherwise written in records Langefort, Langheforda (1086 Domesday Book); Langord (1252); Longeford (1306), Lanckforde(e) (in reference to the hall in 1592).. Of course the name came from a time when the waters of the Blackwater spread over a much wider area than at present. Also, the ford today In this issue (that is just off our picture to the right) is much smaller than the original one, and Editor’s note .................................p.2 indeed no longer crosses the original River Would you like to be a Parish Councillor?...................................p.2 Blackwater. POST OFFICE DIRECTORY OF ESSEX, HERTS, MIDDLESEX KENT ; CORRECTED TO THE TIME OF PUBLICATION. r LONDON: PRINTED AND PUBLISHED BY KELLY AND CO,, OLD BOSWELL COURT, ST. CLEMENT'S, STRAND. W.C. 1862. PREFACE. TIIE Proprietors, in submitting to their Subscribers and the Public the present (being the Fifth) Edition of the Six HOME COUNTIES DIRECTORY, trust that it may • be found to be equal in accuracy to the previous Editions. Several additions have been made to the present volume : lists of Hundreds and Poor Law Unions have been included in the Topography of each County; it is stated under each Parish in what Hundred, Union and County Court District it is situate, as well as the Diocese, Archdeaconry and Rural Deanery; and the College and University of every Beneficed Clergyman have been given. The Post Office Savings Banks have been noticed; the names of the Parish Clerks are given under each Parish ; and lists of Farm Bailiffs of gentlemen farming their own land have been added. / The bulk of the Directory has again increased considerably: the Third Edition consisted of 1,420 pages; the Fourth had increased to 1,752 pages; and the present contains 1,986 pages. The value of the Directory, however, will depend principally on the fact that it has been most carefully corrected, every parish having been personally visited by the Agents during the last six months. The Proprietors have again to return their thanks to the Clergymen, Clerks of the Peace, Magistrates' Clerks, Registrars, and other Gentlemen who have assisted the Agents while collecting the information.
